Doctor Who is back for a new season, and already there are some viewers criticizing the show for being too 'woke' for its inclusive and progressive stories and production. With Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor and newcomer Varada Sethu as companion Belinda Chandra, the new season marks the first time that the whole Tardis crew has been comprised of non-white actors.
While the ethnicity of actors shouldn't be an issue, there's always going to be a number of people prepared to complain about anything and everything. Addressing the criticisms, showrunner Russell T. Davies explained that he pays them absolutely no attention.
"Someone always brings up matters of diversity. And there are online warriors accusing us of diversity and wokeness and involving messages and issues," Davies told BBC Radio 2. "And I have no time for this. I don't have a second to bear [it]. Because what you might call diversity,...

Plot: A surrealist family comedy set in 1969 San Fernando Valley that tells the story of the Chambers, a quirky family pursuing lofty and seemingly impossible dreams, beautifully unfettered by the realities of the world. When Hampton Chambers is released from prison, his long-awaited family reunion doesn’t go quite as he’d planned. During his absence, Hampton’s wife, Astoria, and sons, Einstein and Harrison, have formed an unconventional family unit, and Hampton’s return spins their world into chaos.

Much like a trip in the Tardis to a dangerous planet in the distant future, it can be difficult to remember quite how we got to this place, but the reality remains nevertheless concerning. Review bombing has been a topic of much discussion over recent months, especially when it comes to those projects that have found themselves a target of the "anti-woke" brigade. Next in the firing line is the recent return of Doctor Who, which recently premiered its Season 2 opening episode, "The Robot Revolution."
Written by Russell T. Davies and directed by Peter Hoar (The Last of Us), the first trip in Season 2 for the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and his new companion Belinda (Varada Sethu) has been seemingly well received by casual viewers, with many others from within the Whoniverse declaring it a much better opener than last year's "Space Babies." Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White is expected to lose $115 million. The film earned just $14.2 million domestically in its second weekend. Detailed reports suggest the film’s revenue of $295 million falls short of the $410 million needed to make the film and inflated costs, including $270 million for production.
Additional promotion expenses, residual payments and miscellaneous costs will contribute to another $140 million.
Producers are blaming the controversy surrounding actress Rachel Zegler and her recent comments on the original film. Zegler attacked Disney during a promotional interview, referring to the original animated classic as outdated and taking issue with its romantic storyline.
“The original movie came out in 1937 and very evidently so,” she said, “There’s a big focus on her love story with the guy who stalks her. Weird, weird.” She attempted to take back her criticism of the movie by calling the opportunity to play the iconic princess ‘the honor of a lifetime.

On Beyond the Gates, Hayley Lawson Hamilton has had an eventful six weeks since the soap’s premiere back at the end of February. She has been slapped, ignored, walked out on, and a gun-toting Dani stole her thunder at her wedding. Meanwhile, she’s taken it upon herself to mend her new hubby’s relationship with his daughters, which is a goal easier said than done. Soap Hub recently talked to Hayley’s portrayor, Marquita Goings, about her Btg experience.
Hayley and Btg
Before Btg, Goings starred in Hulu’s Woke, Tyler Perry’s Zatima, which streamed on BET+, and the CW’s Dynasty reboot. Disney’s recent attempt to revive Snow White has struck an unexpected chord according to a new report from The Mail, which suggests that the latest live-action Disney movie’s lackluster box office has sparked a rush for studios to abandon “woke” output and start looking back on the kind of content they were focusing on over a decade ago. Sources from various companies are quoted discussing how things have escalated to become a “survival mode situation,” which is pushing “woke” out, and bringing more projects that ignore Dei requirements down the fast track.
Naturally, when dealing with any news reports that come from unnamed sources, you can read into the content what you will, but the quotes provided to the publication paint a picture of an industry once again in turmoil as they launch themselves wildly into another potentially disastrous set of circumstances mostly beyond their control.

Hollywood is reportedly experiencing a significant shift in its production strategies, with industry insiders claiming a move away from films and television shows perceived as overly focused on progressive themes. This alleged change comes in the wake of recent box office failures, most notably Disney’s live-action “Snow White” remake, which faced criticism regarding its casting choices and narrative alterations.
Rachel Zeigler’s Snow White Disaster: Hollywood Insiders Shift Away from “Woke” Content Following Colossal Box Office Failures
According to multiple sources within the industry, including an Oscar-nominated producer and a television writer, Hollywood studios are reassessing their approach to content creation. These insiders suggest that the emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion (Dei), which became prominent following the #MeToo movement and the George Floyd protests, is now being reconsidered.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is an exceptionally deep anime with many characters who are not just unique in appearance and demeanor but also unique from within. One of the most intriguing characters is Fern.
Fern is undoubtedly a skilled mage, trained by none other than Frieren herself. However, her strength isn’t massive yet. While her aptitude towards magic is extremely high (her raw mana output is immense), her actual combat ability is still developing.
Frieren and Fern from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End [Credits: Madhouse]
She is akin to a young Frieren, still going about adventuring and practicing magic. The mage duels in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End highlight that battles rely heavily on matchups and technique, not just sheer power.
A power that will only grow stronger
There are many characters like Denken, Methode, and Sense that still surpass her in terms of experience and refined spellcraft. Then why is there a special focus on Fern?...

Disney has been reigning as the epitome of animated films across the world. It has all the records, and the box office hits to its name. It did not seem like Walt Disey’s studio was going to move anytime soon.

But as sudden as a bolt from the blue, the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 has shattered all box office records, reaching $2 billion in just 33 days.
This makes Ne Zha 2 the first non-Hollywood film to achieve this milestone, standing as an exceptional example that regional films can perform well and even break language barriers.

Contrary to popular belief, white liberal arts students protesting President Trump through interpretive dance isn’t “woke” — that’s just what The Man wants you to think.
The phrase “stay woke” first entered the public lexicon through the recordings of influential folk and blues singer Lead Belly with his 1938 song “The Scottsboro Boys.” Later, in the current century, the genre-spanning Erykah Badu brought the phrase back into pop culture’s consciousness through her own music, and when the Black Lives Matter movement emerged in the mid-2010s, “stay woke” became a popular warning among BLM supporters that reminded them to be vigilant in spotting racial discrimination.
Then, Childish Gambino released his hit single “Redbone” in 2016, and white college students everywhere stole the word “woke,” over-used it in Tumblr rants and Twitter fights, and turned it into a punchline on the left and curse word on the right that now pejoratively...

Ben Shapiro publicly declared that Bill Burr is “woke,” an “asshole" and “both a moral and an economic idiot.”
To which Burr replied, “Who are you?”
Earlier this month, Burr inadvertently made himself the main character of the conservative media cycle when he went on his latest of many righteous rants about the state of income inequality in America during an episode of The Monday Morning Podcast. While responding to a write-in from a fan who, as a single mother, is struggling to make ends meet, Burr blamed “rabid dog” billionaires for the fact that the richest country in the world has so many hard-working citizens living in poverty, and he angrily suggested that such robber barons “need to be put down.”
Clearly, a certain conservative social media pundit was jealous of the attention Burr was getting from right-wing circles, and Shapiro launched an all-out attack against the comic on Facebook,...

In a barnstorming speech while accepting her Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, Jane Fonda delivered a rallying cry for the causes that have motivated her six-decade career.
Those included workers rights, unions, fighting against inequality, and above all, care for the disenfranchised. “Make no mistake, empathy is not weak, or woke,” she said from the stage. “And by the way, woke just means that you give a damn about other people.”
The remarks were unmistakably political in tone, though Fonda never mentioned the current president by name. Intriguingly, she evoked Sebastian Stan’s Oscar nominated performance as Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” from an angle of compassion. Of Stan’s work, she said, “(He had) to understand and empathize with the traumatized person (he was) playing.”
She also mentioned Bree Daniels, the sex worker she played in 1971’s “Klute,” to address the subject of self-harm and sexual assault on young women.

Hudson Thames found his Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man voice in a rather intimate place.

Jon Stewart has some harsh words after the 2024 election, but none of them were for incoming President Donald Trump. Instead, “The Daily Show” host directed his ire at the left-leaning media and pundits, zeroing in on an unexpected target: “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski.
After harping on how Democrats were disconnected from the general public, Stewart played a damning clip from the MSNBC show. “That was ‘Morning Joe’ host Mika Brzezinski discussing a New York Times column by Maureen Dowd on how to escape the liberal bubble,” Stewart said to ripples of laughter, referring to Dowd’s “Democrats and the Case of Mistaken Identity Politics.”
“I guess I’ll just have to get the Times and read it myself unless there’s another way to make this less entertaining,” Stewart teased before launching into his next clip: Brzezinski’s announcement that she would be reading the piece live on the air.

During the Emmy telecast — before the award for supporting actor in a limited series was announced— Lamorne Morris kept getting text messages from friends. The actor, best known for New Girl and most recently for his turn on the fifth season of Fargo, also is the face of Bmo Bank, and his 30-second spot was playing nearly every commercial break. “I’ve been doing those for six or seven years, but people in L.A. are just now getting wind of it,” Morris says with a laugh. “Everyone was like, ‘This must be a sign.’ And it turns out it was.”
Morris, 41, took home his first gold statuette that night for his role on Fargo, a moment that he says gives him immense pride (when prompted, he quickly produces — with a giant grin — the Emmy trophy on the Zoom screen in his home office) but won’t change the way he approaches his career.

[This story contains spoilers from the third episode of Agatha All Along, “Through Many Miles / Of Tricks and Trials.”]
Former Saturday Night Live star Sasheer Zamata has entered a new realm of fandom with her role as Jennifer Kale on the newly launched Disney+ superhero dark comedy Agatha All Along.
“I think I’m ready,” Zamata told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the series debut on Sept. 18. “I guess I won’t know until it happens, but I am excited because I think Marvel fans will love it. We’re really stepping into the magic side of Marvel and that’s really exciting and fun.”
The WandaVision spinoff finds Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha disingenuously reassembling a reluctant coven to regain her supernatural powers. Among them is Zamata’s character, a potions witch who runs an organic skincare apothecary of sorts when not dabbling in the occult. Garrett Morris, Saturday Night Live (SNL)’s first Black cast member, appeared on the show from 1975 to 1980 and was best known for his portrayal of the fictional Dominican baseball player Chico Escuela. However, it was his role as Stan Winters on the first three seasons of Martin Lawrence’s self-titled ‘90s sitcom Martin that made a lasting impression on Lamorne Morris, who portrays Garrett in Saturday Night, the Jason Reitman-directed story behind the debut episode of the NBC sketch comedy set for theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on Sept. 27., and nationwide on Oct. 11. “Whenever you see someone on TV, if you’re an up-and-coming actor, it seems like an impossible task,” Morris tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Martin, in particular, he’s a master of characters. Every actor on that show had the ability to play multiple characters. They were so funny, so loose, it mirrored how...

Sony Pictures Television is widening the creative circle — by a lot — in its comedy division.
The studio has signed first-look deals with nine writers and comics — Scott Aukerman, Karen Chee, Shaun Diston, Chris Garcia, Chris Gethard, Lisa Gilroy, Lacey Jeka, Julie Klausner and Alok Vaid-Menon. They’ll all work on developing new comedy series projects and potentially collaborate with other writers and producers who have deals at Sony.
Lauren Stein, head of creative at Sony Pictures TV, and Colin Davis, executive vp comedy development, said the deals are part of an effort at the studio to bring in what Davis calls a “spectrum of sensibilities” to comedy development.
“The list is a collective of a different creators and multihyphenates that we believe each have unique voices and a hit show in them,” Davis said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They really represent the comedy community at large, and...

There is something about playing villains in superhero films that Jared Leto botches every time he is a part of them. While his Joker in Suicide Squad was forgettable at best, his Morbius is still one of the most popular memes on the Internet. The actor is rumored to have been offered the role of Skeletor in Amazon’s upcoming Masters of the Universe film.
Fans are naturally not happy with the alleged casting as Leto’s track record has been terrible so far. Despite winning an Oscar for Dallas Buyer’s Club, franchise films do not seem to be his cup of tea. However, fans seem to be campaigning for The Lord of the Rings’ Aragorn, Viggo Mortensen to be cast as Skeletor in the film.

Game of Thrones had a rough start with the infamous scrapped pilot episode, in which everything seemed to have gone wrong, from the storyline to the casting. Even Jason Momoa felt he wasn’t truly present until they changed the actress playing Daenerys Targaryen.

Along with the recasting came the modification of a few significant details which made author George R.R. Martin infuriated. He didn’t like what they had done with the intimate scene between Daenerys and Khal Drogo.

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus not only gave an origin story for the Xenomorphs but also pitched a dramatic and nihilistic origin for humanity itself. The sci-fi film featured Michael Fassbender as the android David, who joins the Prometheus crew in finding the Engineer on the moon Lv-223. It also featured Charlize Theron and Idris Elba.
Scott’s Alien prequel of sorts has received much flack over the years for its overreliance on philosophy and convoluted plot. Despite showing a lot of promise in the opening sequences, fans seemed to be lost as the story progressed and revealed the Engineer. Fans still seem to be confused about the Engineer suddenly going berserk in the middle.

Emilia Clarke dedicated almost ten years of her life to Game of Thrones, and with such a long journey, it would be difficult to say goodbye to a character that became a part of one’s life. The ending of the show was, of course, a controversial one, but fans could never deny how the franchise also changed their lives.

Clarke portrayed Daenerys Targaryen, one of the most significant characters in the show and probably the role that she would be remembered for in her entire career. Dany was a joy to embody, but equally tough and challenging given her complicated nature, and according to the actress, the day they wrapped up filming for Season 8 felt like the relief of removing a tight undergarment.

Florida has removed the “LGBTQ Travel” section from its tourism website, marking another move by state officials to separate themselves from a community that once made up a large portion of Florida tourists.

Season 26 of Law & Order: Svu kicks off in a little over a month, and due to a recent behind-the-scenes photo shared by Ice-t, the star recently took the opportunity to dismiss claims that the long-running crime-drama has gone "woke." Joining the Dick Wolf production in Season 2, Ice-t has been a staple on Svu for more than 20 years, with his character of Fin Tutuola slowly rising up the ranks from Jr. Detective all the way to Sergeant. Megalopolis features a sprawling ensemble cast, which includes Jon Voight, noted for his conservative views and being a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, as well as Shia Labeouf, who has been accused of sexual assault. “What I didn’t want to happen is that we’re deemed some woke Hollywood production that’s simply lecturing viewers,” Coppola said. “The cast features people who were canceled at one point or another. There were people who are archconservatives and others who are extremely politically progressive. But we were all working on one film together. That was interesting, I thought.“
Coppola did add that things were tense between himself and Labeouf. “Shia [Labeouf] really took to it,” Coppola said. “I had no experience...

It has gotten to the point that saying “woke” in any context somehow now comes off as ironic or at least sarcastic. And when engaged in an argument about not liking “strong female characters” (the subject of this episode – which you can watch embedded above), the titles of Kill Bill, Terminator 2 and Aliens are always tossed around as examples of strong female characters that are beloved by all and I am gonna share those same examples. Those films have never really been labelled “woke” due to being layered, believable intriguing entertaining characters and well you know …“cool”.
Gender politics or social justice never enter your mind because you want this character to overcome the obstacles they are given and not preach about how “girls get it done”. We already know girls get it done or women can accomplish great tasks. We cheered when Ripley killed the alien, we jumped...

In today’s politically touchy country, “woke” has become just another four-letter divisive reference to people who are attentive to important societal issues. But if that’s the case, it can be argued that “Hacks” is TV’s most socially conscious, dare we say, “woke,” series on air.
The Jean Smart-lead Max comedy has broached topics like sexuality, mortality, aging, bullying, and on and on, usually subtly and reasonably within the structure of the show, not hitting viewers over the head with opinions. One story that went a little deeper in Season 3 dealt with Ava and Deborah talking about climate change, a topic the series’ creators thought was too important not to confront.
“Sometimes the biggest challenge to writing ‘Hacks’ is compartmentalizing the fact that the world is literally on fire,” Lucia Aniello tells Variety. “Our country, we’re burning in many different ways. Sometimes it’s hard to ignore that,...

Despite ending on a cliffhanger, a sequel to Game Night has still not materialized. However, Lamorne Morris, who starred in the beloved 2018 comedy film, is still holding out hope that a follow-up will one day be produced.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Morris expressed nothing but excitement when asked about a possible Game Night 2. "I would love one, are you kidding me? It set itself up for a sequel, and I just had so much fun working on that project. We shot in Atlanta, which is one of my favorite cities to be in. And the cast is great. Everyone was super kind, super nice," he said. "I had a lot of nerves going into it, working with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams and Jeffrey Wright. All these folks on this movie, Michael C. Hall, I thought, 'Oh my god, these are iconic, iconic actors.' Kyle Chandler. 'These...
