The story starts with a woman being run over after a getaway from an armed robbery. It then moves 10 years forward.
Tommy Gatto is a hotel owner who is getting married to a younger wife Mary (Clare Grogan.) She is having an affair with the company's finance director.
Although just married, Tommy goes on a fishing trip with two old friends. Tomy never returns alive, his plane crashes and he was drugged.
Mary and Tommy's daughter Ailsa are the beneficiaries. Ailsa is not happy with the company's finances.
Both Ailsa and Mary are threatened, soon the other people in the boat trip also begin to die.
The main suspect is Jimmy Gatto, Tommy's brother. He is a hitman who has just been released from prison and an old school friend of Taggart. However Jimmy's nerves are shot, his hands shake and it looks like he was blind drunk when one of the men got murdered.
Like other Taggart stories, it starts off slowly as it sets the scene. However this never got going. By the time the suspects went down one by one, there were only a few plausible suspects left. I use the term plausible in its loosest term, the killer is a crack shot.
