When "28 Days Later" was released in 2002, it heralded the revival of the post-apocalyptic zombie movie after years of the subgenre lying dormant. While the success of the film — directed by Danny Boyle and penned by Alex Garland — kicked off a wave of zombie media that led to not only the return of the subgenre's progenitor, George A. Romero, but also shows like "The Walking Dead" and films like "Shaun of the Dead," "Zombieland" and so on. It didn't necessarily kick off a franchise for itself, however. Despite 2007's "28 Weeks Later" — directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo — being generally well-received, a follow-up failed to happen, despite years of rumors that Boyle was interested in returning to the world of the rage virus.

Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct the second part of the upcoming “28 Years Later” trilogy from Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.
Previously, she directed and co-wrote “The Marvels” starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, and “Candyman,” a contemporary spiritual sequel of the 1992 cult horror classic of the same name for Universal and Monkeypaw Productions.
“Candyman” opened to No. 1 at the box office, making DaCosta the first Black female director to open at the top of U.S. box office charts. DaCosta made her feature debut with the critically acclaimed “Little Woods,” which she wrote and directed.
When DaCosta sat down with Variety last fall to discuss “The Marvels,” she was proud of checking “direct an MCU” movie off her directors bucket list and looking forward to what came next.

Putting a fresh spin on one of the greatest movies of all time can’t be an easy task, but Kevin Williamson is up for the challenge. Deadline reports that the Scream writer is developing a TV series reimagining of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, and I can already hear the cries of sacrilege.
Based on Cornell Woolrich’s 1942 short story It Had to Be Murder, Rear Window starred Jimmy Stewart as a photographer in a wheelchair who spies on his neighbours from his apartment window and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder, despite the skepticism of his fashion-model girlfriend, played by Grace Kelly. To be fair, the iconic film was remade before with the 1998 made-for-tv movie starring Christopher Reeve. There’s also Disturbia, which was at least partially inspired by the Hitchcock film.

Titled Monkey Man, a new exciting film has premiered its trailer and we are intrigued! Making his directing debut is Oscar® nominee Dev Patel and with this project he brings an astonishing, tour-de-force feature action thriller about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless.
Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score...

In the years since this column’s debut, ’90s horror movies have actually found a sizable and heartwarming amount of rediscovery and reappreciation. Physical media has resurrected and restored numerous films to the point where even derided efforts like my beloved I Still Know What You Did Last Summer can get a celebratory 4K upgrade. With this new outlook, horror culture is starting to better redefine the historical landscape of the decade. The conversation is no longer enveloped by the shadow of Ghostface.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
The Collector
If the triumphant return of the Saw franchise has you in the mood for more trap-laden horrors, look no further than The Collector — which was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw that would show Jigsaw’s original story. When producers passed on the idea, writers Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan (Saw IV-vii) reworked it into an original script, which Dunstan directed in 2009.
A slasher/home invasion hybrid for the so-called “torture porn” era, The Collector stars Criminal Minds‘ Josh Stewart as struggling ex-con Arkin. A planned heist at his new employer’s home to repay a debt becomes deadly when he...

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures has entered production on Hedda, its reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s famed 1891 stage play Hedda Gabler, announcing the addition of six to its cast. Newcomers include Imogen Poots (Baltimore), Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives), Finbar Lynch (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Mirren Mack (The Witcher: Blood Origins), Jamael Westman (Hamilton), and Saffron Hocking (Top Boy).
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Tessa Thompson, Nina Hoss, and Nicholas Pinnock, as previously announced.
Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler revolves around Hedda Tesman, a newlywed stifled by societal norms. Frustrated and trapped, she resorts to manipulation and destructive actions. As secrets unravel, the play explores themes of power, gender roles, and the tragic consequences of societal expectations in the late 19th century.
Directing from her own script is Nia DaCosta, the filmmaker behind Uni’s newest Candyman horror pic and the acclaimed crime drama Little Woods. Producers include Plan B,...

Anyone who knows me would say my taste runs ever so slightly counter to the popular opinion but up top I wanted to shout out some big titles that I appreciate but didn’t quite make my favorites list. Oftentimes it feels like the days of true-blue horror icons are behind us, but Gerard Johnstone and Akela Cooper’s M3GAN was a veritable hoot that gave us an instantly iconic tiny terror in tights who more than lived up to the memes and showed everyone that hasn’t quite come around yet on HBO’s Girls just how #mother Allison Williams is. Also, that Skatt Brothers “Walk the Night” needle drop took up residence in my head last January and has not left. Talk to Me was one of the more intense in-theater experiences I had this year, and though it lost something the more I sat with it, what...

Mickey Cottrell, the beloved indie film publicist and producer who long championed independent cinema dating back to the early days of Sundance, has died at 79. He passed away Monday, January 1, 2024 at Motion Picture Hospital in Woodland Hills, Calif. The news was confirmed by his sister, Suzy Cottrell-Smith, who shared on Facebook, “My adorable, fun, critical, foodie, particular, brilliant, loving brother passed on to the next life early on New Year’s Day. He was smiling when he died. Mickey Cottrell will be missed by many.”
Many of Cottrell’s friends and colleagues shared memories of the veteran PR whiz — who also had many credits as an actor — on Facebook. Cottrell suffered a stroke in 2016, with friends and loved ones raising more than $57,000 to help with medical bills on GoFundMe. Jordan Peele burst onto the filmmaking scene back in 2017 with critical acclaim, box office success, and even a huge win at the Academy Awards, making Get Out one of the most promising debut features in the history of the horror genre. Peele proved he was the real deal with both Us in 2019 and later Nope in 2022, and he’s now hard at work on his fourth movie.
Universal Pictures recently bumped Jordan Peele’s untitled fourth movie from its original December 25, 2024 release date, and we haven’t been provided with a new date. The delay is due to last year’s SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, but Peele teases in a new chat with the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast that he’s excited to get back behind the camera this year.

The holiday movie season this year is packed with many options, much like other years have displayed. However, despite the bevy of titles, including Wonka, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Color Purple, Migration, Anyone But You and The Iron Claw, they weren’t enough to garner interest in audiences to flock to theaters around Christmastime. Without the year’s biggest double-feature event with Barbie and Oppenheimer, it could have been a worse showing for theaters as even the reliable blockbusters like the Mission: Impossible, Superhero, and Fast & Furious franchises would flop. It’s almost fitting that 2023 ends with a whimper.
Deadline has recently reported on the lackluster continued performance of the box office this week. Wonka stays on top as it is revealed, “On Wednesday, it was Warner Bros.’ Wonka that won the day with $8 million at 4,213 theaters, moving its running cume to $102.5M on its 13th day.

"Candyman" began its life in 1985 as a short story called "The Forbidden," originally published in Clive Barker's "Books of Blood, Vol. 5" (called "In the Flesh" in the United States). "The Forbidden" was set in Barker's hometown of Liverpool, specifically at a run-down building called the Spector Street estate, where a grad student named Helen went to photograph images of graffiti and poverty. While there, she encountered a mysterious monster the Candyman, a creature she assumed was merely an urban myth. The Candyman is covered in bees and sports a hook for a hand. Its origins are unknown.
In 1992, filmmaker Bernard Rose adapted "The Forbidden" into the feature film "Candyman," one of the more celebrated horror films of its decade. Helen was played by Virginia Madsen, and the mysterious Candyman was played by a menacing Tony Todd. Rose transposed the location from Liverpool to the Cabrini-Green housing projects in Chicago.

“Get Out” fans will have to wait longer for Jordan Peele‘s fourth horror film, as Universal has pushed back its release from its initial Christmas season 2024 slot due to the recently ended strikes by writers and actors.
Peele’s untitled upcoming project is getting a “strike-related” release delay, TheWrap has learned, with the new release date to be determined. Peele’s film had been set to go against a holiday slate that includes Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” and Focus Features’ horror film “Nosferatu.”

Christmas 2024 is already a little less merry with the news that Jordan Peele’s next film won’t be appearing around then as planned.
All three of Jordan Peele’s films as director so far have walked that tricky tightrope of being both thought-provoking and crowd-pleasing.
You might have your own personal favourite, but all three of his creations have landed with audiences and critics alike. While Peele has produced reimagined takes on horror classics such as Nia DaCosta’s Candyman (and the planned remake of The People Under The Stairs), his directorial projects so far have been original stories – and we’re hoping that the next one will be too.
It’s looking like – per World of Reel – we’re going to be waiting longer for that next film than was originally intended, however.

But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare,” per the show’s official logline.

In the ever-evolving landscape of film and television, the representation of diverse voices has been a persistent challenge. A recent report from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative paints a stark picture: of the directors across 1,600 top-grossing movies, a mere 6% were women, and less than a third of all speaking characters were girls, women, trans, or non-binary individuals. The glaring disparity not only limits on-screen representation but also curtails career opportunities for women, trans, and non-binary storytellers.
Enter Proof of Concept, the initiative launched today as the brainchild of Cate Blanchett, her Dirty Films producing partner Coco Francini and Smith in collaboration with the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. This program is designed to address the trifecta of challenges facing these directors: funding, mentorship, and exposure.

Wes Craven's 1991 horror hit "The People Under The Stairs" evades easy description. It's a movie that's at once chaotic, insightful, campy, hilarious, horrifying, and weird as hell. There are images in the movie that are impossible to unsee, and ideas about race and capitalism that felt prescient in the '90s and are more relevant than ever now.
"The People Under The Stairs" has been overdue for a remake and it's only fitting that it's finally in the works courtesy of the new master of social commentary-filled thrillers, Jordan Peele. Peele's production company Monkeypaw is at work on an update to Craven's original, and while there's still a lot we don't know about "The People Under the Stairs," we're creeping into the shadows to bring you all the details we can on this fresh take on a very freaky story. Here's everything we know so far.

Legacy sequels, recently they’ve been the talk of town, for better and for worse. The recent Halloween trilogy seems to be beloved by some and hated by others, the new Exorcist sequel underperformed both in box office and public opinion, yet these types of sequels are not stopping anytime soon. One that seemed to go over mostly well with a decent box office, mostly good reviews, and generally happy fans was the 2021 release of Candyman (watch it Here). Of course, plenty didn’t love it or thought it was trying too hard, but overall, it did ok and brought plenty of new ideas to the table while respecting the original. A lot,...
