Obsidian, the studio behind The Outer Worlds, can trace its origins to Interplay Entertainment. Interplay created Wasteland (later to become Fallout) which was published under EA. EA would not release the rights to the name "Wasteland" back to Interplay which lead to the creation of Fallout. Interplay created a new division, Black Isle Studio, to handle their new game Fallout. Black Isle Studio closed their doors in 2003 after several critically acclaimed releases in 2003. Several of the core members then opened the doors to a new studio, Obsidian.
