Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993)'s reluctant hero Quark, played by Armin Shimerman, is mentioned as "Quark of Ferenginar". Among the businesses in Freecloud, one is named after Quark; another is named Mr. Mot's Hair Emporium (after Mot, the barber from Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)'s Enterprise D).
When Rios is assembling his disguise in Picard's chateau office, a framed black and white photograph is briefly visible over his shoulder. It appears to show Picard standing next to Samuel Clemens, whom Picard met in Time's Arrow (1992).
The woman in the bar offers Maddox a drink called tranya. This is Balok's drink in The Corbomite Maneuver (1966).
Although it has been identified in interviews and promotional materials, this episode marks the first time that the name of Rios's ship, La Sirena, is actually mentioned in scene. It is spoken over the comm by the Freecloud orbital control operator.
When undercover, Picard speaks with a fake French accent. Patrick Stewart has stated that in the planning stages of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) in 1987, there had been some discussion that Picard would speak with a thick French accent, an idea which was ultimately nixed. This may have been a nod to this early prototype of the Picard character.
