There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi has been released from Tehran’s Evin prison, his wife Tahereh Saeidi announced in an Instagram post. However, Panahi is out on bail and his case will be reviewed in March, so the release could just be temporary, according to several sources.
The director was released two days after announcing that he was going on a hunger strike to protest still being incarcerated after Iran’s Supreme Court had in last October overturned a six-year sentence issued against him in 2010 for “propaganda against the system”, ‘Variety’ reported.
That sentence had become obsolete due to the country’s 10-year statute of limitations. But the directors’ wife and lawyers said that Iranian security services were forcing the judiciary to keep Panahi behind bars.

A tragic saga rife with human rights violations and government overreach has narrowly avoided the worst possible outcome. Critically acclaimed Iranian director Jafar Panahi has been released from prison after his unjust arrest in early July of 2022, which occurred in the midst of widespread protests centered on freedom of expression throughout the country. The filmmaker's wife Tahereh Saeedi revealed the good news on social media and other outlets (via Deadline) alongside her attorney Saleh Nikbakht, who said in a terse but vindicating statement:
"Although I am happy about Mr. Panahi's release, it must be said that his release should have taken place three months ago, following the acceptance of our objection to his previous court decision."
The court decision in question refers to the circumstances surrounding Panahi's original arrest in 2010, in which the director was handed a six-year prison sentence of "propaganda against the system" in retribution for attending the...

Acclaimed Iran filmmaker and political dissident Jafar Panahi was released from prison Friday after months behind bars.
News of Panahi’s release, first reported by Iranian independent journalist Mansour Jahani, comes shortly after Panahi, director of The Circle, Taxi and No Bears, announced he had begun a hunger strike to protest his continued incarceration.
Panahi’s imprisonment had drawn the attention of international film festivals and activists, as it shone a light on repression of the national cinema industry and continuing demonstrations around women’s rights in Iran.
The Berlin Film Festival, which gave Panahi’s Taxi drama a Golden Bear prize in 2015, offered relief over the director’s release from prison after expressing concern for other arrested filmmakers in Iran. “We were very concerned for the health of Jafar Panahi and are now very glad that he has finally been released,” Berlinale directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian said...

Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia debuted at the top of the streaming rankings for the first week of 2023, and the streamer’s Kaleidoscope also had a strong showing.
Ginny & Georgia, whose second season debuted on Jan. 5, amassed 2.52 billion minutes of viewing time for the week of Jan. 2-8. That’s more than double the total for its best week in 2021, when its first season ran; it only topped 1 billion minutes once. It had twice as many episodes to draw on this time out, since Nielsen counts viewing of all episodes of a show in its rankings, but the large majority of that time was likely spent on the new season.
Kaleidoscope, a thriller designed to be viewed in any order before its last episode, had 1.64 billion minutes of viewing in its first full week (it premiered Jan. 1). Wednesday was the only other title to pass the billion-minute mark for the week,...

Let the games begin.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Netflix is launching yet another dating show, which promises to be its biggest yet. A mashup of the streamer’s various series — including “Too Hot To Handle,” “Love Is Blind,” “The Ultimatum,” “The Circle” and more — “Perfect Match” brings together some of the most popular singles from Netflix’s portfolio for some good ol’ fashioned reality TV messiness.
The new competition series, hosted by Nick Lachey, brings a lineup of various reality stars to a tropical location in an attempt to match them up. As the group competes to form relationships, the most compatible couples play matchmaker, breaking up other couples and sending them on dates with brand-new singles that they invite to the villa.
“This is like ‘Hunger Games’ for dating,” one of the contestants says in the new footage.
“Will they create better matches, or will they create chaos?...

Netflix is re-teaming with Sf Studios on “The Conference,” a high-concept Swedish comedy slasher film based on a novel by Mats Strandberg, one of Scandinavia’s most successful horror writers.
Patrik Eklund (“We Got This”) directed the film with a cast led by Katia Winter (“Sleepy Hollow”), Adam Lundgren (“Hilma”) and Eva Melander (“Border”).
Penned by Thomas Moldestad, the movie revolves around a team-building conference attended by municipal employees which spirals into a nightmare when accusations of corruption begin to circulate and plague the work environment. Simultaneously, a mysterious figure begins stalking and murdering the participants one-by-one.
Sf Studios, which previously delivered “Snabba Cash,” “Red Dot,” “Loving Adults” and “Ehrengard” for Netflix, is producing the film which is slated to be released globally on the streamer later this year. The shoot recently wrapped.

It’s time for the Netflix reality show universe to unite in one show. Perfect Match will have familiar stars competing to find love. Many fans were shocked to find out Bartise Bowden is one of them, and he joked about hanging out with other “red flag” reality stars.
Bartise Bowden of ‘Love Is Blind’ returns for ‘Perfect Match’
Love Is Blind fans watched Bartise fall for Nancy Rodriguez in the pods. After they got engaged, Bartise told her that he was more attracted to Raven Ross and even called her a “smoke show”. The couple also had different opinions about abortion, and Bartise told Nancy’s brother if she gained weight, he’d focus on helping her lose it instead of loving her.
The season ended with Bartise turning her down at the altar. He claimed he wanted to continue dating her, but Nancy refused to continue the relationship.

A ruling on Jafar Panahi’s release from Tehran’s Evin prison is deemed imminent now that Iran’s supreme court has overturned the conviction that led to the incarceration last year of the auteur who is considered one of Iranian cinema’s greatest living masters.
Panahi’s wife, Tahereh Saeedi, has launched an appeal on Instagram stating that his lawyers have managed to successfully overturn the six-year sentence issued against the director in 2010 for “propaganda against the system.” That sentence has become obsolete due to the country’s 10-year statute of limitations. Panahi’s case has now been sent to an Iranian court of appeals.
“Last week we were informed that Jafar will be out in a week,” Saeedi said in the appeal posted on Instagram this week. However, “a week passed by and Jafar is still not with us,” she went on to lament.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to go through the audition process for Netflix‘s The Circle? Thankfully, there are numerous contestants after five seasons of the reality competition series to explain how The Circle producers picked them for the show. And one player from season 2 equated the casting period to being interviewed for a job.
Sam Carmona | Netflix Lisa Delcampo shares her audition story for ‘The Circle’
During an interview with Buzzfeed, Lisa Delcampo, who played as a catfish — her boss, Lance Bass — in The Circle Season 2, shared insider secrets about the show, including what the auditions were like.
“It’s probably different for everyone,” she explained. “I met a friend of a friend who came to my birthday party, and we were talking about The Circle, and he was like, ‘I cast that show!’ And I was like, what?! That’s how I got started. [The questions were like] tell us about yourself.

Netflix‘s The Circle became an instant hit when it premiered in January 2020. The reality competition show’s premise sounded simple and superficial. Still, it was more entertaining to watch a group of contestants quarantined in their own apartments messaging one another than we thought. And now, five seasons later, The Circle on Netflix is a success. But there are some changes fans would make to the series.
Oliver Twixt | Netflix ‘The Circle’ Season 5 on Netflix highlights one of the fans’ pet peeves
Before the finale of The Circle Season 5 dropped on Netflix, a fan started a Reddit thread to share one of their pet peeves with the show.
“Does anyone else feel annoyed when the contestants act shocked or wonder what’s going on when anything happens?” they wrote. “For example, Everyone on this show has seen previous seasons. Therefore Everyone knows that after someone is blocked, there will be another alert,...

Netflix has defended freezing cold conditions on an outdoor U.K. set where its real-life Squid Game unscripted series saw contestants sustain injuries while competing as winter temperatures plunged below zero.
On Wednesday, the streamer and its co-producers pushed back on claims in The Sun tabloid newspaper that players had been severely injured during production on a former air force base near Bedford, in England’s eastern region, during a rare cold snap.
“We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set — and participants were prepared for that — any claims of serious injury are untrue,” Netflix and Studio Lambert, which is co-producing Squid Game: The Challenge along with The Garden, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

The real-life “Squid Game” contestants are unexpectedly facing real life-or-death circumstances.
The Sun reported that cast members of Netflix reality competition series “Squid Game: The Challenge” required medical attention while filming during freezing weather conditions in an airplane hangar. Per The Sun, the 456 people competing for a 4.56 million prize were playing a game of “Red Light, Green Light,” also known as “Statues,” in minus 3 degrees Celsius weather, roughly 26 degrees Fahrenheit. Contestants had to remain completely motionless for the game, with some unable to move their feet due to the cold.
The series began production on January 23 in Cardington Studios in Bedford, England. Netflix reportedly gave contestants hand warmers and thermal underwear to wear while in the freezing weather conditions.
Fewer than five players required medical attention. One contestant also injured their shoulder after accidentally running into a wall.

This JUNG_E article contains spoilers.
From Yeon Sang-ho, the director of Train to Busan, JUNG_E is a sci-fi drama set in a dystopian future where the Earth has been ravaged by climate change and is no longer habitable. Humans are forced to abandon the planet for man-made shelters in space, though not every shelter is on board with their proposed leadership. What remains of humanity becomes engulfed in a civil war between the Allied Forces and the Adrian Republic.
But there’s more to JUNG_E than war games and big CG-laden battles. Deep down, Sang-ho’s newest film is about the ethics of AI bred for war and the commercialization of death. JUNG_E tells the story of Captain Yun Jung-yi, a legendary soldier whose failed final mission leads to her brain being cloned by a military AI development company, Kronoid, in an effort to design the ultimate robotic soldier in her image.

Somehow, "Love Is Blind" season two's Natalie Lee and Shayne Jansen are at each other's throats again, and it's all thanks to Netflix's new series "Perfect Match." "Perfect Match," which debuts Feb. 14, is a crossover dating series that unites some of the breakout personalities from other Netflix reality shows, including "The Circle," "The Ultimatum," "Too Hot to Handle," and "Love Is Blind." The cast includes Jansen, who almost married Lee on "Love Is Blind." But Lee, in since-deleted Instagram posts, accused him of joining the show while they were dating.
"I knew about the new dating show back in Sept 2021 because Shayne and I were both approached to apply for it while we were in a relationship (casting didn't know we were together at the time)," Lee wrote in a lengthy Instagram Story, according to a screenshot published by People. Premiering in 2020, “The Circle” is a US Netflix reality TV show based on the popular British series of the same name. Each season a group of strangers enters a colorfully decorated apartment building and engages in chats, games and blockings with each other all while remaining completely anonymous. In “The Circle,” you can choose to play as yourself or as someone entirely different, aka a catfish. Michelle Buteau hosts the fun and flirty program, though she doesn’t get to officially meet the contestants until the finale, when the 100,000 grand prize is given to the player who the others rated the highest. There are various other versions of the social media game show around the world, including in France and Brazil, but the photo gallery below highlights “The Circle” winners and finalists from the US Netflix seasons. The announcement, in October, that Maya Jama would be the new host of Love Island was met with elation from fans across the country.
“This is Perfect,” gushed one commenter. “They couldn’t have hired someone better!!!!!!” buzzed another. Many joked that Jama is so gorgeous, the ITV2 reality show’s contestants would want to dump their partners for her.
But the new job probably didn’t come as a huge surprise to the woman whose mother has videos of her, at the age of six, declaring she would be on TV one day.
Jama, now 28, has always been determined. In interviews, she’s variously described her teenage self as “fearless” and being “tunnel-vision focused”.
But back then, life was not without its complications.
Jama was born in Bristol, to a Swedish mother and Somali father, and spent many of her weekends up until the age of 10 visiting her father in prison.

Even over a video call, Raven Sutton's energy is infectious - as bold and bright as her cobalt-blue hair. The 27-year-old recently made history as the first deaf contestant to ever enter Netflix's playful reality series "The Circle." But in all honesty, she's just here to play the game (and maybe even win). Sutton was initially introduced to the show while searching for entertainment at the peak of the pandemic. "I would consider myself a super fan. Let's be clear on that," she establishes right away, her two interpreters bridging the gap between American Sign Language and spoken word. "I loved the drama on it, I loved the connections. I mean everything about it," she tells Popsugar. However, she quickly realized that watching "The Circle" was nothing compared to the excitement of being on the show herself.

Update: The BBC has confirmed its acquisition of the American version of “The Traitors,” as first revealed by Variety. The full series of the U.S. adaptation for Peacock will drop on iPlayer on Friday (Jan. 13), and will later air on both BBC Three and BBC One.
The show will be available on BBC One as double bills on Wednesday nights at 10:40 p.m. for 5 weeks from Jan. 25. It will air on BBC Three across three weeks from Jan. 24.
Earlier: The BBC is in discussions to acquire the U.S. adaptation of hit format “The Traitors” following its runaway success in the U.K., Variety has learned.
Sources indicate that BBC executives have been keen to get their hands on the Alan Cumming-hosted reality show — which launches on NBC-owned streaming service Peacock on Thursday (Jan. 12) — though a deal is not yet concluded. There’s no doubt, of course,...
