  • Warning: Spoilers
Just like any other commercial Movie out there, hero killing whole bunch of goons and cleaning up the city

But it's not good, Rajinikanth is too old his running and action scenes are very much Cringe,

Also this movie has questionable logics like doctors lecturing a girl how she gonna die instead of helping her, the more Murgadoss films i watch the more i wonder how he made a film like Thuppaki,

Lip sync was bad during Lot of scenes, especially with additional supporting actors,

Only good i found about this film is Santhosh sivan's cinematography his usually red crimsonish lights that he uses for heros(just like thuppaki, anjaan and thalapathi) and volumetric fogs

    Warning: Spoilers
Average revenge story. Positives - Rajini's energetic charisma, Yogi Babu scenes, some Nivetha Thomas' portions and BGM, that's it. Everything else was bad, so bad that i felt cringey even during some emotional scenes. Opening fight sequence, for commercial elements, the director could've made the fight somewhat illogical but this was way out of logic, slicing 50+ bad people at the same time, they should've really rethought about the fight scenes. If it was a fantasy fight film, it's totally believable. ARM really screwed up with dubbing, they should've made hindi actors to speak in tamil or else they should've totally spoke in hindi and made tamil subtitles. What ARM did was he made them speak in hindi and gave tamil voice, looked like a dubbing movie to be honest. Nayanthara as usual played a bigil like role in this film too. We only got to see villain in 2nd half but he is like usual villain who keeps walking and talking forever. Climax fight was atrocious. This film made me think "Is this really ARM's film?". For Rajini fans(veriyans) and children, this is a treat for them. Overall film is sub-par.
  • This movie came with lot of expectations about Super Star - A R Murugadoss combo. Yes, they have lived up to the expectation to a certain extent. Thalaivar is as usual stylish and suave in 1st half and everything seems good. But, after 10 minutes in the 2nd half the movie becomes brainless (literally too) and progresses without logic. The absolutely miserable scene is the spoiler and I don't want to disclose it. Finally, a disappointing watch that pulls you down after a marvelous 1st half.
  • This is the worst movie ever. There is complete disregard for police hierarchy and procedures. A DGP level cop must know the basics of policing.

Wonder why such movies are made. This is similar to Rohit Shetty films.

Watch Grandmaster starring Mohanlal to know police hierarchy.
  • Dear Mr. Murugadoss.

Once upon a time, you made entertainers such as GHAJINI, RAMANA and even THUPPAKKI. In between all that, you've attempted "high-concept" films like EZHAM ARIVU, SPYDER and political-based like SARKAR. The Pre-THUPPAKI phase was your best, but enough has been said about that (and even the almost-confirmed rumors that RAMANA was a story "taken" from a then-assistant director, who later made a film with Vijaykanth, THENNAVAN.)

Lets analyze your "post-Thuppakki" phase. Why this downward spiral? What happened to you post Thuppaki? This KATHTHI of yours is overrated outside Vijay's fanbase, the film itself makes no sense. Between Neil Nithin Mukesh's corporate bashing, the senior-citizen episodes and the twins-identity crisis (oh and Samantha's in this for no reason), it's a nonsense film. SPYDER failed to register because while we got a damn good SJ Suryah, the film was a dark knight rip-off without any build-up. SARKAR to me was Vijay flagging off his political intentions and was merely propaganda-ish (although the film itself was bloated with problems.)

Now coming to DARBAR. Where's the story? Why are we still going with songs that pass off as "Garageband" quality when you have Harris Jayaraj or others to do your bidding? Not only aren't they great, they add minutes to the already-direction-less film. Dear directors, you can still do a mass-entry film without throwing every wire-fu at the viewer. Maybe for the 30 USD paying fan (yes that's the average ticket price of a Rajinikanth film opening weekend in the US.)

Another problem I had with the film is the overdose of comedy. You know you're in trouble writing a "meet-cute-comedy" sequence when you involve Yogi Babu & a lot of hamming previously seen in KS Ravikumar's films. Rajini's earlier film PETTA had much better scenes because despite the fanboy in Karthik Subbaraj, he didn't compromise that much in his film-making (I know I was harsh in that film, but watching DARBAR, I realized the value of PETTA now.) The scenes with Nayantara and Rajinikanth in that first-meeting was just painful and will likely lead you to doing a fast-forward. It looks like Nayantara's role was just "Andhar Paisa, Bahar-ne walk-on role" approach.

Much has been said about "alien" this film feels. It's a Hindi movie dubbed in Tamil. For this review comes after watching the "Hindi-dubbed " version that aired recently on STAR GOLD. Does this make the film better, yes.

Now returning to the purpose of this review, the story? Viglilance cop tries to hunt down goondas and while they happen to rile up Prateik Babbar (in a thank-less role), they happen to anger Suniel Shetty too (who's appearance consists of being roaming around 1-2 set designs, never does he step outside to threaten anyone else except the climax, guess Shetty didn't have the dates for shoot.) If there's a silver-lining, it's Nivedha Thomas as Valli, the daughter. Scenes with her and Rajni were the silver-lining in this bloated action-entertainer of a film.

Sir, please understand, there are better directed Rajnikanth films, but this Baasha/Padaiyappa curse seems to keep coming back. Fanboys who have no control over what audiences want, make films for the fanboys. Karthik Subbaraj nearly succeeded in PETTA, why couldn't you?

Look at your GHAJINI and RAMANA and even THUPPAKKI. Why were they reverred even till today? They all had a story, a semblence of purpose, the heroines (Asin in Ghajini) had an author-backed role which drove the Hero into his purpose. The films post Thuppakki were vanity projects that centered around the masala trope (which can be better.) Better to take a break and re-think before announcing another vanity.

    Sincerely, A former fan.

    The GOOD, BAD & NOT-SO-BAD

    GOOD

Superstar Rajni - For his undiminished charisma, style quotient and energy through which he fits into the role of a super-cop, when he is almost seventy, including courageously gymming out in all glory. He is a living testimony to the adage that age is just a number and remains the primary reason to watch this otherwise avoidable flick. And.. that is a near impossible feat that he can rightfully claim that only Rajni can accomplish.

Nivetha Thomas - For her commendable performace in a meaty cameo as Rajni's daughter.

Anirudh - For an energetic background score and few good (not great) songs.

    NOT-SO-BAD

Yogi Babu - who fares decently with his comic one-liners.

Action set-pieces - While none of it is exceptional, the railway station piece is well choreographed and packs a punch.

Nayantara - She continues to look like a billion bucks and oozes elegance and grace even though she has a nothing role here. While there is a weak pretense to rationalise the semblance of a romance, it is what it is - at best, a weak pretense, if not entirely phony.

    BAD

The Villains - Sunil Shetty and co who are bad because they are not bad-enough baddies to challenge the hero in any meaningful way.

A R Murugadoss - Director ARM appears pretty directionless as he puts up a tepid show with weak writing which is all over the place. Looks like the chart-buster "Summa Kizhi" was actually inspired by a reading of this ragtag script. If not for the Superstar who shoulders this pretty sloppy outing and salvages it to watchable category, this would have been declared DOA - dud-on-arrival.
  • This movie is a watchable crime/action movie for rajini sir because he has done his part well. niveda thomas had also performed well the father daughter relationship was good. The bgm was energetic and some songs were good. The first half was better than the second half. The movie is good while there was some unlogic scenes and the story is not that variety this is a watchable movie considering rajini sir's effort it is watchable for rajini sir
  • Super star Rajini sir is extraordinary... We can see the vintage Rajini ..

But the problem is with director murgadas the story is decades old and routine stuff everything is predictable and clumsy ... Boring movie .. watched full movie only for the screen presence of the vintage Rajinikanth
  • The movie starts off with plenty of exciting scenes for Rajini fans. The plot seems promising, the characters seem interesting and the story seems worth watching...

But then it ALL comes crashing down in the nonsensical second half: a disappointing villain, illogical sequences and a bordering-on-stupid script ending with a dull climax.

Pros: Rajini, father-daughter sentiment, Yogi Babu. Cons: Unintelligent direction, amateurish dialogue, boring climax.

Knowing the director and the cast I went to see the movie without reading any critics reviews or the synopsis hoping to be entertained. To my surprise the movie was a complete thumbs down from start to finish. The only reason I gave 4* is for the CGI or else I would have given just a single star.

There was no essence to the story line at all. There was nothing to take back from the movie except the very loud music beats that will make your eardrums explode. Super Star Rajini's acting was average of his capabilities and bear minimum effort has been extracted from the Super Star by the director.

A total waste of time going to see this movie for me, who went with medium to high expectations.
  • #FinalVerdict

The Indian audience savours true-blue masala entertainers. Director A.R. Murugadoss has to live up to the expectations for varied reasons: He teams up with superstar Rajinikanth for the first time and attempts a cop story yet again. Darbar is one of those earthy, traditional, uncomplicated masala movies that most of us grew up on. The protagonist of Darbar is not the desi version of James Bond, nor is he any kind of a superhero. The story is interesting and although it is oft-repeated, the new angle is both, contemporary and quite fresh. But what doesn't change is the intent of making a full-blown masala entertainer. Yes, Darbar is vintage masala fare that has a larger-than-life hero, who triumphs against all odds. And, of course, it has a knockout performance by superstar Rajinikanth. If at all there's a shred of doubt whether Thalaiva is The Best in the business, all you've got to do is watch Darbar.

Darbar is an acknowledgement to one of the most successful genres -- action movies -- known for the trademark good versus evil themes and well-choreographed stunts. Darbar revives memories of the bygone era that stressed on raw action and was rich in fist-to-fist combat scenes. But Darbar is a film of today, hence the stunts are extremely stylized and polished in keeping with the times. It's raw power presented in a slick demeanour. Darbar works for varied reasons: The conflict between the protagonist (Rajinikanth) and antagonist (Suniel Shetty), the high-quality dramatic scenes, the raw action and of course, it shows how police force should work against the rampant corruption, fraudulent politicians and spineless goons. In short, Darbar is a complete package.

A.R. Murugadoss' screenplay is engaging and interesting. The first half is replete with light moments which keep the viewers fully entertained. The second half is serious but yet, very engrossing and engaging. It also offers scope for emotions. Several of the scenes will draw huge rounds of applause in the cinema halls. Of course, the single screens will resound with thunderous applause when Thalaiva comes on the screen for the first time. The climax, after that, is simply earth-shattering and the audience will experience a rush of adrenaline throughout the action-oriented climax. The twist in the tale will also bring the house down with excitement. All in all, the screenplay is so phenomenal that it will make the viewers' hearts dance with joy. In fact, the drama and also the execution of the written material keeps you completely hooked to the proceedings.

I'd like to make a special mention of the action scenes (Ram-Laxman, Peter Hein). At a time when most film-makers opt for action directors from abroad for gadget-driven thrills, Darbar goes for the desi flavour and it works luminously. The raw, hardcore action is easily amongst the high points of the movie. On many occasions than one, you have your hearts in your mouths while watching the scenes. Anirudh Ravichander's effectual background score also deserves immense praise.

For any good versus evil film to click, it ought to have the protagonist and the antagonist on the same podium. In Darbar too, it's not just the hero who's powerful and mighty; the villain is equally ferocious. That's what makes the conflict all the more enjoyable -- it's a fight of the equals. Besides the sequences involving them, a number of dramatic sequences leave an indelible impression. And, of course, the finale, which is simply outstanding. The dialogues (A.R. Murugadoss), in a nutshell, are aimed at the masses and works big time. Santosh Sivan's cinematography is eye-catching. The film bears a stylish look all through. A.R. Murugadoss' direction is extraordinary. His narration makes the drama believable. He has given the film a huge canvas and has spared no efforts to make it a visual delight. There are a number of scenes which show his genius as a filmmaker.

But even roses have thorns and the aspect that doesn't really gel is the romance between Thalaiva and Nayanthara. In fact, the romance-and-song routine comes across as a roadblock and mind you, it has nothing to do with the lack of chemistry between the two actors. It's because the drama is so powerful, commanding and omnipotent that you want every other aspect to be sidetracked. Anirudh Ravichander doesn't get the opportunity to deliver a sparkling soundtrack. Yet, the title track (rendered with a lot of fervour by Nakash Aziz) is the sole track that works. The editing (Akkineni Sreekar Prasad) is razor-sharp at most times but could've been spruced up during midsection.

Superstar Rajinikanth is in the centre of the battle between good and evil. He is the lifeline, the soul of the film. The embodiment of screen masculinity, Thalaiva enacts the central character of a righteous, hardhearted cop with flourish. He brings alive on screen a larger-than-life hero character with determined conviction, which renders you thunderstruck. He returns to the over-the-top-action genre of films with this one. In a nutshell, his performance plays a pivotal role in carrying the film to the winning post. Darbar bestows him with abundant opportunity to flaunt each shade of his skill. It's not only the plot that carries Darbar. It's also the mood and the expression of Thalaiva that makes Darbar a treat.

Nayanthara is fabulous. To share the screen space with an actor of the stature of Rajinikanth and yet remain in your memory even after the show has ended is no cakewalk. She looks fresh and photogenic and acts her part brilliantly. Suniel Shetty is in terrific form. Darbar would've faltered if the antagonist wouldn't be as convincing as the protagonist. Suniel Shetty matches up to Rajinikanth every time they come face to face. He's venomous to the hilt! Darbar has a huge supporting cast, but I would like to single out a few names that add weight to the proceedings. Nivetha Thomas impresses again. She deserved more footage. Prateik Babbar is superb. He's only getting better with every film.

To sum up, Darbar follows the existing trend to create more homespun, home-flavoured desi movies rather than pursue the money-spinning NRI souk that has, until recently, been the order of the day. While the central plot packs a solid punch, with several clap-trap situations interlaced in the narrative, it slips into the knowable zone at times. Overall, Darbar works big time for varied reasons: The energetic drama, the terrific confrontations, the raw stunts and of course, for the three 'heroes' -- superstar Rajinikanth, Suniel Shetty and director A.R. Murugadoss. This one is the emblematic formula movie with distinct essentials that Indian masses yearn for. A complete package of entertainment for the masses and devoted fans of masala movies. Go, have a blast!
  • I've never written a review before but just couldn't stop myself this time. To every rajini fanatic I plead you to not glorify such a baseless horrible movie. Irrespective of this movie becoming a blockbuster or not Rajini will still remain rajini but by glorifying this senseless cop movie we will only be encouraging the hese directors to continue to fool the audience by making such stupid films. The confidence that the fans will take care of making a film an automatic success is the reason directors are taking things for granted. I plead to the fans and the movie goers to skip this terrible movie in protest. This film wouldn't have got positive reviews even back in the 90's as it is a totally outdated script. A. R. M has lost himself. Spyder, Sarkar and now this. Three major disasters in a Row.
  • This is definitely the worst Rajini Movie ever. What a disappointment. Murugadoss has wasted the opportunity
  • I like Rajini, but after Kabali and Kaalaa, i decided to watch his movies only after review.... I went to the premier show only because my friend invited me.. but what a pleasant surprise.. each moment was a pack of joy in the movie.. Rajini proves that he is THE superstar.. the story is not very new, but the presentation is fresh.. just go and watch the movie, you will sure come out with a satisfaction..

Total cringe fest. Save yourself from 3 hours of clichéd crige fest of a movie with lifeless characters.
  • santynitz11 January 2020
Police hierarchy and procedures are not followed at all.

Different cops are wearing different uniforms which don't match at all with their badges and caps.

No research has been done into how police system functions.

Rajinikanth is good but he does not emote well in many scenes.
  • There is nothing much to say about this movie, this movie has nothing new to offer and at places it is very unbearable. It is just pathetic in every sense and almost every scene looks like a horrible version and nothing new to offer. Murugadoss used to a pretty good director but over the years in the name of commercial cinema, he is just making what others masala directors have been doing and it is awful to see a guy like him making this kind of pathetic films.
  • Waste of money, not worth to watch. I slept while watching this movie. No logic in the story, murgadas failed miserably. The worst music , it is only noise. I wake up only Because of so called music.( noise)
  • South film industry is every now and then they release a mindless action film with a wig wearing 60 year old bald man romancing a girl of his daughter's age, the action defies physics, the plot is predictable and full of clichés, it's your typical leave your brains at home type film, rajnikanth's blind fans will see this film as a masterpiece whereas guys who love content may get a headache after watching this masala crap, in short if you're not a big rajnj fan then stay away from this film
  • Useless rajini and his gimmicks are just non sensical. He can really pick up some classy storyline and make one before he gets too old.

Other wise can watch his son in law Dhanush make and act good movies.
  • Absolute garbage & beyond corny, over the top stupid scenes. The action scenes can irritate people. Kabali & kaala are the type of movies he should be making according to his age, they were good too.
  • vinodhjanakiram11 January 2020
    Warning: Spoilers
Went with much expectation thought it will be like petta/thuppaki but terribly disappointed, not sure how a mass hero with so many experiences selected such story, extremely poor, now I understand murugadoss is so dumb and brainless and none of his movies are his own stories, he is unfit for cinema industry, wasted my 3hrs time, worst film ever watched
    • Watched in Prime Video. This movie is a good entertainer.
    • This movie is a whole Rajni show. Rajni deserves a 10/10 for performance.
    • Negative points are about the story. There is nothing new in the story.
    • Felt like Suniel Shetty is not utilized properly.
    • Overall a typical Rajni entertainer movie.
  • Well, my mind was almost set that not to watch Darbar in theaters coz of the mostly average to below average reviews and from some trustworthy friends. But, yesterday night when my friends were about to leave for the movie and was calling me to join them and then i was like, how can i miss a thalaivar movie in theaters. And left for the late night show in the mall next to me.

The movie portrayed the life of Adithya Arunachalam, Commissioner of Police and his thirst for justice. Every friend of mine told that the first was good / entertainer but i felt kind of boring despite of some laughs by Yogi Babu. The second half was pathetic. The movie has got so many illogical and unbelievable scenes which was a major let down. I felt that Thalaivar lost his yesteryear's Charisma.

ARM's story, screenplay and narration was an absolute letdown and it never carried its pace. The weak portrayal of villains also had an impact on the whole movie. But the only thing i liked/loved in the movie was the daughter-father relationship. Nivedhitha excelled in her character as Valli while Nayanthara had nothing to do with her role.

Anirudh's BGM was okayish in parts and the songs were not so impressive. Cinematography felt like a usual one, never felt that Santosh Shivan held the camera.

All in whole, a below average flick.
  • The incredible South indian film industry has produced another masterpiece where the laws of physics do not apply, a film where a 60 year old bald man romances with a girl of his daughter's age, it's your typical "leave your brains at home while watching this"type film, the first half is tolerable but second half is just pathetic, how could people give this film 10 stars, rajni fans will see it as a masterpiece whereas content lovers may get a headache after watching this film
