  • I watched this film last year. Though it triggers my childhood memory with Doraemon but I'm now a bit bored with its fixed storyline.
  • Warning: Spoilers
In this movie, Doraemon helps Nobita create an alternate reality where rabbits live on the moon. If one were to boil this movie down to its individual core elements, I think they'd find very little that hasn't been done in previous Doraemon films. (Okay, having one of the movie-only characters pose as a transfer student and actually interact with Nobita's classmates outside of the main cast is new.) However, that actually works to its benefit, in my opinion. After so many of the post-reboot Doraemon movies have felt experimental in one way or another (with varying degrees of success in my book), it was nice to see one that replicates the vibe of a classic Doraemon story without being a straight-up remake of an older film.

I also thought this movie does a good job of introducing potentially convoluted plot points without feeling bogged down, especially the main gadget that allows the story to happen: the Fringe Theory Club Member Badge, which can create alternate realities that are only perceptible to people wearing it. The effects of this gadget could have easily been overly confusing, but the film manages to establish how it works quite effectively.

I suppose there are a few things I could quibble about: maybe it strains credibility that the villain's second-in-command would think that someone named Diabolo was working with good intentions all along, and maybe the final battle against the villain's minions gets a bit too slapsticky to take seriously. Otherwise though, I'd say this is pretty solidly one of my favorite non-remake movies to come out of the 2005 Doraemon anime reboot.

Not to mention, Shizuka gets a nice moment where she saves everyone else here. That was a semi-regular occurrence in the classic films, but it's been a while since the last time. The fact that older entries in the Doraemon film series have a better track record of portraying Shizuka is honestly kind of sad, so anytime in the new movies that she gets to do something important instead of standing in the background or playing the damsel in distress can only be taken as a good sign.

I have watched Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of the Moon Exploration 2019, on youtube on one of those fan video posts.

It's about this blue robot cat Doraemon who goes to the moon through a portal door with his friend Nobita. They meet a new friend Luka who literally has rabbit ears and so does his alien colony. Nobita and his school friends go visit the moon and into a dome city of rabbit aliens. They get attacked by a giant alien lizard rabbit. Nobita gets lost in the cave and his friends go search for him, eventually he's found. Meanwhile an evil lord named Diabolo has his general Goddard and his 2 soldier guards go find Luka and his colony to kidnap them for experiments. Nobita and his friends go on a hovercar ride on the moon dodging obstacles, suddenly, Luka and his sister and family gets kidnapped by Goddards soldier who takes them away in a rocket ship. Doraemon and his friends goes in the hot air balloon in outer space to another planet which is under martial law by Goddards soldiers and the people on that planet are homeless. Nobita and his friends sneak aboard on Diabolos spaceship, they attack the guards and rescue Luka and his friends from test tubes. Goddard betrays Diabolos and fights his security robots. They eventually defeat Diabolos and Luka says goodbye to Nobita who goes back home to their lives.

First of all I enjoyed this film, but I could not understand a word they were saying, second there's no English subtitles and I was very confused as to what was going on in the film. Also there's some brief nudity in this cartoon.

Also I don't understand how Nobita and his kid friends can be on the moon without a spacesuit, they would freeze to death and die on the moon, also why aren't they bouncing on the moon? Their weight would be 6 times lighter than the Earth weight. It reminds me of the Bug's Bunny 1948 cartoon short Haredevil Hare where he doesn't wear a spacesuit.

Also how can they fly in outer space in a hot-air-balloon? It wouldn't work, they should've used a rocket spaceship which would've been more practical to use in outer space.

If the Toho company or other Japanese companies involved with this Doraemon reads this review, please have them either make an official English subtitle version or an official English dub version with English voice actors, I can't understand Japanese very well. And please have the credits in English so I know who the voice actors, musicians are since I can't read Japanese very well. Also I want it to be officially available for North American on official download websites like Amazon Prime or other streaming services or on DVD, Blu-ray.

For the rating of this movie I would rate it PG-13: for brief nudity, cartoon violence, some scary scenes, peril.

  • One could argue the limitations in creating a cartoon or Anime movie successfully. But few exceptions always pop up and make their way, like this one. Storyline, direction, music, animation, cinematography, dialogues all contribute there unique share into creating this soul touching movie. Visually appealing and entertaining. Storyline may feel childesh to few, but remember that now humans have concrete evidence of existence of an ancient civilization almost 56 million years ago on earth. At the same time we also have evidence of liquid water flowing on Mars in the form of rivers at the same time, that is around 56 million years ago. Atlantis which many are trying to find may could have existed beyond earth and beyond human imaginative horizons. As we go ahead in time and more scientific evidences emerge movies like this and similar to this will start to make sense. Creatively crafted entertainer, worth your time for sure.
