  • This narrative video was produced to honor the 50th anniversary of CCR becoming CCR back in 1968. As such, we would expect the video to evoke nostalgia. The song itself was originally written about the tensions the band was having leading to the eventual breakup, so we would also expect that idea to be addressed in the narrative as well. The creators of the video have said that they wanted to capture the feeling behind the song, a time capsule of what the song means. It does all of this, incredibly well.

As you watch the last day three friends spend together, the feelings of nostalgia wash over you as they do when listening to any CCR song, and the tension for the impending split is always there, tugging at the threads. Have You Ever Seen the Rain is the soundtrack to this story, and to watch it as the band's music and Fogerty's vocals rain down on you is just magic. You don't want it to end, but of course it eventually does.

What we have here is a music video from 2018 that runs for slightly over three minutes, so not long at all and neither new nor old really. You can read the name of the band as well as the name of the song in the title here and that i find a bit confusing because this piece is from the early 1970s, so had/had its 50th anniversary these days. The music video is incredibly more recent though, so it's okay they apparently wanted to bring back an old song to people minds again and introduce to those not aware of it (including myself), but I am not sure they made the right choices here. The song does very little for me honestly, but what felt at least as forgettable were these three minutes visually. It's the story of a young woman about to move places apparently and while she does, she remembers a night out with two close friends and we see her memories right in front of us. Some talking, some partying and that's pretty much it. It did not make an impact on me and I find the rating here way too high honestly. So I am glad it was this short.

Let's also take a look at the basics now: The director is Laurence Jacobs and he is also one of the two writers. And this man has really worked in almost every area of (short) film production it seems judging from his body of work. Same applies to the co-writer with the addition that Klompien has also acted a lot and this is something Jacobs has never focused on. Anyway, their names are not famous at all, so I believe this is a bit of a fan film we got here. Or maybe not as it was uploaded on the band's official channel and has resulted in almost 90 million views by now. This also certainly has to do with the three cast members. The two that are not as much at the center of the story than the girl in the lead have acted lately in the very successful new series The Boys. I initially kinda thought that maybe this music video is linked to said show, but then I saw they made it in 2018 already and the show began one year later. My second guess that this was done to honot the song and come up with a modern music video for its 50th anniversary is also not accurate because this is from years before said 50th anniversary. Anyway, I can live with the mystery why this project became reality. If you have seen one or several of the three cast members here in one of their numerous prestigious projects, then maybe you can see beyond the vanity of the entire thing. The only moment I kinda liked was the second in which we see the female protagonist and her male friend together and it is implied that there was/could be more between them. This was nicely acted, especially from Frolova. But it's not enough overall, not even for such a brief little movie. I give it a thumbs-down as I don't think they achieved the depth they were going for. Watch something else instead.
