  • No, it's not Dark, but it didn't strike me it was trying to be. For one, it's far less serious. There are exactly zero comedic characters in Dark, while this show has three. The science is over the top, but as long as you're not a doctor or a scientist it's possible to suspend reality and just enjoy the story. It's no less implausible than Rain. I thought the main character was quite good. The pace was a little too quick. I think it would have been better spread out over a few more episodes to give more opportunity for the characters to develop, but they did a good job in the 6 episodes they had to work with. American network television can't manage the same level in 12 or 13 episodes most of the time.

I'm at that point where I'm struggling to find something really good to watch I haven't already seen. That happens when you binge watch too much great television, so you find something to hold you over. This did it for an evening. Looking forward to Season 2.
  • This is a good show. Yeah Dark is better but both are different ffs! If your only basis of comparison is that it a German Netflix Original then yes, you are going to be disappointed. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't watch this. Biohackers is a fast paced drama that is short and enjoyable af. If you are looking for something to binge in a day, or even under 4 hours then this is the show. The story is compelling, the ideas are new and it just feel more fresh. It doesn't concentrate on teen romance much which is always a good thing and it gets most of the science right, if that matters to you.

Overall, would recommend it and eagerly waiting for its second season.

This show isn't that bad. It's not the best but definitely not bad. The first ep isn't all that but it gets better and goes fast too. I'll say give it a try up to the 3rd ep. If u don't like it, quit.
  • I enjoyed Season 1. I'm watching Season 2 and I'm finding it implausible/unbelievable. I tried a couple of episodes, but I'm giving up. I do recommend Season 1!!
  • Good story if u dont know much about the subject. Characters are not great but the young ones are fresh unused and credible. The story cant decide if it should be thriller or science but has great pace nothing surprising realy. Great locations and a surprising carelessness dealing with dna and its possibilities. Cant judge if the science is correct but sounds realistic. All in all good entertainment but no need for this end. Not all series need a second one.
  • German series don't usually grab many headlines, with stodgy plots and dead-serious characters, but this is somewhat better: decent plot, well-acted and, once you get past the sci-fi hokum, pretty engaging. Film editing is sharp and glossy, with high production values and some good use of flash- backs. It touches on some vitally-important issues in bio-ethics, but it's not going to win prizes for insight and originality. Worth a watch.
  • I was shocked by some of the bad reviews in here, not at all accurate . With the complete lack of anything to watch in covid times I found this really entertaining and enjoyable. Even if there was lots to choose from I would still watch this any day. I do not consider myself an expert critic like many of the people commenting obviously do , just a good show.
  • Summary

The second season is clearly inferior to the first, since it is more serious, downcast and linear, but it also captures us again by the charisma and fortitude of its protagonist (by Luna Wedler), his conspiracy climate that constantly calls into question the loyalties and behaviors of the characters, some successful suspense scenes, their renewed class notes and what again implies that it takes place in a country with the historical background of Germany.

Contains some information about season 1

The first chapter begins with Mia waking up in a class at the University of Freiburg in a state of confusion: she suffers from an amnesia that prevents her from remembering what happened in the last three months. Her account will describe her attempts to discover the cause of her condition, what is her connection with the event that she had closed the previous season and to reconstruct those three months, while she suffers from some symptoms and signs in principle inexplicable.

The resource of amnesia is always interesting, where those who suffer from it must reconnect with her inner circle and reconstruct her immediate past and assimilate the affective changes that occurred in that period.

Recall that the previous season had ended with Mia betrayed by the journalist Winter and kidnapped in a van with Dr. Lorenz. The young woman does not remember this episode clearly either.

Throughout her investigation and adapting to a changed affective environment, Mia experiences some physical disorders and glimpses of her recent past, the frequency of which makes the use of staging them somewhat repetitive. The situation of Dr. Lorenz, her former nemesis, is also very different.

The comparison with season 1, which was clearly better, is inevitable. Season 2 is more linear, even with all the characters of the previous one it is less choral (his roomates friends are at first almost reduced to a comic relief), it is more serious and does not introduce great conceptual novelties with respect to the first. Mia remains the valued successful experimental subject of the eugenic project Homo Deus, with a highly enhanced immune system. But even the bioethical aspects raised in the previous season lose strength at first, although they reappear at the hands of a powerful character who is revealed as her enemy. Again, the series missed the opportunity to better develop Lorenz's character and her new circumstances.

In any case, the series captures us by the charisma and integrity of its protagonist (by Luna Wedler), its conspiracy climate that constantly calls into question the loyalties and behaviors of the characters, some successful suspense scenes, their renewed notes class and what it implies that it takes place in a country with the historical background of Germany.

This series definitely got me hooked! All casts were great, plot kept me hanging on the edge of my seat. Can't wait for season 2.

I enjoyed the show, binged it in a day. It's not bad, but also really not great. The show starts off kind of slow and almost had me losing interest but suddenly it sped up really rapidly and it made me want to watch the next episodes. It's pretty fast-paced and I do like the structured way in which they explain Mia's back story step by step. So even though I'm ranting a bit in the next paragraph, I would still watch season 2.

First, I found it kind of weird that Mia, who seems to be an undergrad (just starting out in uni), within the span of days to a week or so gets to work with the insanely tenured and successful Lorenz and gets do do all sorts of high-level lab work for her, she moved into Lorenz's inner circle really quickly. I get that she may be a smart student but come on. This is not at all how universities work. Then there is the cliché of the two over-the-top nerdy roommates and the one hot-but-not-so-smart roommate. And of course it just so happens that they all have exactly the skills and money that she needs to solve her problems later on. They also seem to be immediately on board with her crazy plan while being portrayed on the news as a terrorist. Not so sure everyone would just happily join in with someone like that. Then the stereotype of the brilliant young evil entrepreneur lady with the big house and the nice car. And finally... That love affair with both Jasper and Niklas. Why, just why. It feels added just for the sake of "complicating" the plot a little bit.

The ending feels like a slightly forced plot-twist. I'm not sure how to feel about it, I didn't expect that journalist guy to be evil at all, but oh well. Let's see if there is some actual depth to that twist in season 2.

PS I see some other reviews comparing this show to Dark. There are in my opinion zero parallels to be drawn here, and Dark is definitely on another level.
  • The story is a standard cliche story, trying to present a genetic world where you can do manipulation in your garage. It seems Someone googled cripsr and wrote this thing. And it seems the author has never ever visited a German university. The relationships are developing and deteriorating within two weeks and have no depth. And of course, an evil academic hears classical music in a house, so big, that Julius Caesar would have been impressed. Happens in Germany all the time... we invented those kind of evil counterpart. Watch it, when you come home drunk.

Storyline is kinda addictive with really short episodes, it made me watch the next episode as soon as one ends.

For English speaking viewers the roommates dub overs were garbage. As a matter of fact I think they could have completely removed them and the over all would have improved. Everything else is on par with Netflix production standards, imo.
  • This show is not pretending in the expose to be SF in any way - the methods presented are, since they exaggerate what gene technology can do nowadays or like 10 years ago. The acting is quite a mixed big with nobody really standing out in their roles. Nerds are exaggerated and the nerdy flat-mates are outright annoying. Anyway, the writers don't give the impression that they understand anything about the technology used or how a university works.

I found the series interesting enough to get me through it. I am not very good at judging script and the nuances of a movie I just know if I like it or not. I did like it but felt that there is no way the characters could possibly know as much as they did at such young ages especially Mia who I think was a freshman. The thing that bothered me most was the way they ended the last episode. I know there is such things as cliff hangers but heck we did not even get to the edge of the cliff we were just hanging. I sure hope there is a second season.

, it offers details, few, and these are shown with impressions. there is no magic though science must have been impressing back then in its fast evolution. its a mess.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Not the same type of thriller as before, more of a race against time after the true person behind Lorenz is unmasked. Mia's brain has been purposely infected with an aggressive form of. Jakob Cruetzfeld disease in order to erase past memories of Dr Lorenz's Homo Deus project. The race to cure her comprises the main theme of season two, so it is a totally different type of suspense, still good, just different. Does not look like they left space or reason for a third season unless they come up with an entirely new plot. I don't perceive that there will be a big outpouring of requests for season three given the ending.
  • Über kool German BioMed students get embroiled in dodgy research and scientific conspiracy whist having relationships, studying for degrees and being 'cooler than thou'. The acting is basic, storyline improbable and concepts utterly batty but it is just about watchable. If only I was this cool.
  • A very entertaining serie, excellently filmed and directed. The young actors perfectly fulfill their roles, they are credible. The series shows us the life of young university students in a small town in the south of Germany, with just doses of suspense and elements of science fiction. Don't be swayed by bad reviews as you will find quality entertainment.

Not bad but not too good so far. Maybe in second season gets the thrust it needs to deploy all the possibilities the plot offers.
  • The target is just a bit higher (15years later though) than that of other loosely science-focused series like Fringe: people with no understanding of the topics that mistake cool for interesting.

Indeed Biohackers has some well designed characters and shows a bunch of cool hacks (the room-mates with different skills/quirks are a great idea yet they are treated like 1 dimensional puppets), but that is all it can offer.

The storyline, as you get deeper into the plot, shows there's no attention to realism. Overall what we have is a thriller for teens full of cliches, stupid plot/characters development, cringy writing and a terrible scientific/academic department.

Pity, the subject deserved a much more refined production than this B-tv-movie vibe.

It was very entertaining to watch. Yes it is fast paced, yes it's not the best writing ever, a little cliche buuut entertaining. I think overall was good
  • A rather fantastical but entertaining series aimed at the younger demographic. Handy way to practice your German.
  • The first season was not great but fine. Reasonably well made and decent acting. The second season on the other hand is pure garbage. None of the characters are believable, the science is completely ridiculous and the plot is pure nonsense. What a huge waste of time.
  • Decent drama but not really science fiction, just science
