  • One of the things i really like is the persistent stupidity. it's in every scene and even the plot is stupid as hell. i like it.

Yes it's absurd and silly but it's David Wain, so what do you expect? If you're a fan of The State you will enjoy this.
  • Some moments were very funny, some moments boring, but i think it's a good show to watch if you can't find anything else.
  • This is absurdist comedy. It Is meant to be ridiculously stupid to the point of laughter, just like Children's Hospital (which is rated a 7.8 currently and is the basis for this spin off) and NTSF:SD:SUV (which is rated a 7.3 currently and is a parody of every cop serial but especially the ones that use acronyms, as the show actually means " (National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle" which is hilarious on its own).

Obviously we are all different and have different tastes but this show isn't a 4/10. I believe the problem is that it airs on Netflix, while those other shows did not and were niche shows that are marketed towards a select audience of people who know those shows exist and know that they are short ten minute episodes airing at midnight on the Adult Swim Network.

With Netflix being what it is and attracting a global audience, they've increased the episode run time from 10 minutes to 20 minutes and the worldwide viewers only include a fraction of people who actually enjoy these absurdist parody shows, hence the low rating. it this aired on Adult Swim, then it would have hit it's target market squarely on the nose and been rated at least a 7/10.

I get why not everyone connects with this show. You almost have to be a fan of Childrens Hospital to get the humor in Medical Police because of the heavy use of fan service jokes and deep cut references to the original show. If you aren't familiar with the original show, or didn't care for its absurdist approach to humor, you could find yourself lost almost immediately.

Like Childrens, a satire of medical dramas like Grey's Anatomy, Medical Police is loosely structured as a send up of action dramas like Jack Ryan ,with a threat introduced early in the season that the main characters fly around the world trying to resolve in their vaguely defined roles as "medical police". You really have to use quotes around the word because, as with Childrens much of the characters reality is literally just whatever they say it is in a particular scene, with everyone around them usually just instantly accepting whatever insane thing they just said. So in this case, they mean "police" in the sense that they grabbed some guns and declared that they were going to stop this global conspiracy, and everyone kind of shrugs and goes along with it.

The humor can be difficult to follow. I gave my best friend a boxed set of the first five seasons of Childrens as a gift one year, and his reaction was pretty much 'what the hell?' It's that kind of humor; you either love it or hate it, but there's very little space in between those two extremes. But if you loved Childrens, then I think there's a solid chance you'll love Medical Police. The differences between the two are fairly minor: instead of following a larger cast each episode, the story largely follows Lola and Owen most of the time, and instead of each episode being a self-contained plot there is an overriding story arch that develops over the season.

Honestly, it took some cahonas to make the show the way they did, as almost a single really long episode of the original show, because the non-initiated are probably going to think it's the weirdest thing they've ever seen. I'm a pretty big fan of Childrens and even I found myself occasionally struggling to connect the dots on obscure references to one-off episodes from Childrens run. But despite a somewhat slow start to the season, I ended up really enjoying it; as soon as I finished the season I started it over again just to see what I could catch that I missed the first time.

So I guess my recommendation is, if you were a fan of Childrens Hospital and loved it, definitely watch this show. If Childrens wasn't for you, then this probably won't be either. And if you haven't seen either, get a hold of the first season of Childrens and see if you enjoy it. If you do, you'll have a lot of fun binging ahead of you.
  • If you like absurd comedies such as Childrens Hospital and particularly NTSF:SD:SUV like me, you should give a chance to this. Because it is actually a combination of those series. And that's why I enjoyed it.

Still, it's far from perfect because some action scenes are way more serious than they are supposed to be, especially the fights. It really contradicts with the surreal tone of the comedy. Also, travelling almost the whole world throughout the first reason was unnecessarily confusing for me. They should limit the places of the story in the second season.

..in a childish kind of way. It gets tiresome and annoying after a few episodes.

If you are a fan of David Wain and friends, you enjoy Medical Police. The humor is mindless and stupid but that's exactly what they were going for and it worked. It's an action movie parody, much like They Came Together was a RomCom parody. So silly, it's hard not to laugh.

All in all if you're looking for a mindless show to enjoy, Medical Police is where it's at

    Can't wait for season 2
  • Like a modern Naked Gun but with less charm. Takes an episode to find its footing and at that point you're ready to just follow the absurdity. The running jokes are probably best served in a binge session as they're quite subtle. Do think a lot of the more negative reviews on this are a little harsh.
  • This show feels like a parody of a detective/medical show. Sometimes it can be pretty funny and show was able to get a giggle out of me, but most of the time jokes either fall flat or are very uncomfortable to watch. Show is filled with twists and turns, plot is fairly easy to follow but is lacking in substance and some episodes just feel like a filler and at the end of the episode you ask yourself "why was this episode necessary ?". Cast is fairly good and roles fit most of them, and they look like they are having fun with it. Story overuses clichés of popular action movies a lot, everything is very convenient for the main protagonists and they rarely get into trouble, and even if they do "drama" is dispersed within a couple of minutes. Show like this is not for everyone, I found myself skipping past some prolonged scenes that I felt like should have been shortened or left out of the show. But if you are looking for some lighthearted comedy show and dont mind silly one liners, weaker plot, stereotype jokes and couple of graphic scenes I feel like you might give it a watch. Tempo of the show is pretty good - each episode lasts around 20 minutes. I hope that Netflix wont cancel the show after its first season because it sure has a lot of potential but if they want to continue with this silly-cheesy-wannabe police show/parody I dont know how many people will turn into its second season, even if it gets one.

Sure it's not as funny as Childrens Hospital. It's still delightfully absurd & ridiculous. Not every episode is a hit but I at least laughed once per episode. It's rare that I laugh at loud at comedies anymore but this is so dumb it did the trick.
  • Warning: Spoilers
But wow did they have any idea when making this that we'd actually be living through a killer virus and the fake CDC PSA in Episode 6 could actually be running as a real CDC PSA right now!

Forcing people to watch this should be considered a crime against humanity. Astoundingly bad. Horribly written, acted, and directed. This is like having a collection of toddlers all tell you a joke they made up. But less cute.
  • Rob is as always dumb, but so hilarious! The script & dialogue is actually very refreshing and...stupid, yet very funny (although sometimes just stupid :p).

Also the score of the show is pretty good.
  • I never watched any of its predecessors, but I loved the utterly stupid (and sometimes even surreal) tone of the whole show! Made me laugh out loud. The main characters were idiots with hearts of gold, and very fun to watch. Well, maybe they're not idiots all the time, being people of science and all. But anyways -- I'd love to see this pair of cop-doctors/doctor-cops and their friends on more misadventures in the future!

Hope we get a few more seasons out of this!
  • This is fully reminiscent of comedy styling such as Airplane! and National Lampoon, which were so popular in the 80s and 90s. Its crazy, unique and silly, all of which having the making of a great series.

Unfortunately American 'humor' over the past 15 years has trended to be degraded to poo, dick and fart jokes. There are a few exceptions, but often to reach a large audience and hit the lowest common denominator, US comedies have constantly lowered their standards to the point where its basically the same as all the others, with a different coat.

Im really glad to see a return to this kind of creative comedy, and keenly look forward to a second series.

Edit: Original review was after 5 episodes. While the series became a little more low-brow and the jokes dried up towards the end of the series. Its still worth a watch for those who like absurd humour. Adjusted rating from 9 to 7.

I don't if this is one of those times brits just don't get American humour but I'm missing scrubs a lot now :-/
  • If you like Childrens Hospital you will probably like this too! I am on episode 5 and enjoying it very much!
  • Every millisecond of this show is trying to be funny, which doesn't quite work. It's like that one girl you know who tries way too hard to get people to like her.

Some really great laughs mixed in there, but the majority of the jokes are bad. So overall it feels sour.

I say it's worth a watch if you're super baked. Or if you really click with this sense of humour, cause I can see some people loving this show.

Wish this was a medical drama instead of comedic. Not funny. Viral outbreaks are a very real threat and it would be great if the show took the material more seriously.

    10/10
    Really?
I created an account because I was surprised at the negative feedback. I found this show hilarious, as is anything with Rob Huebel.
  • Do you remember the Naked Gun series? You'll be a little disappointed.

Do you think Adam Sandler is funny? You'll be a lot disappointed.

Do you think Space Force is funny?

    You'll think this is hilarious.

O.k. I give it a "6" because there's about one laugh line per episode.

But why Netflix throws money at this while trash canning quality show like Alter Carbon is just baffling.
  • This was a surprise because its so weird.. They just made a very easy going half witted comedy series that most people probarbly wont like and i will be surprised if there will bea second season.. The production is not cheap and the actors are great. Still this is a series i would more expect in 2005 and not 2020 because of the comedy style... Anyways its still better than any reality tv show and i would rahter watch every episode 10 times before watching one episode of the kardashians
  • I sat through the first episode and did not smile once, so I made an account here specially to give it a scathing review. However, while doing so, the second episode began playing, and it has actually given me some heartfelt lulz. Enough so that I am now watching episode 3, and I am really beginning to enjoy it. It's a slow burner. Just give it a chance before judging.
  • A fun and extremely dumb comedy show in the genre of airplane/naked gun type humor and parody. Sometimes a bit too serious for its own good, but it has some great visual gags and two very funny leads. Plus John Hamm shows up as a water slide enthusiast doctor for plot reasons. How can you not love that?
