The film is a sequel to an earlier children's film called Frog. Shelley Duvall revives her motherly role as Arlo's understanding and tolerant mother. Scott Grimes' Arlo is a bit grown up now. Elliott Gould is back as Arlo's father. The film is dated though. Paul Williams played a cursed Italian count who becomes a frog for six centuries. He returns as a broke lounge singer wrecking havoc on Arlo's life. Judith Ivey is great as the Italian psychic. Robin Tunney is young but showed a promising start here. She plays Hannah. Amy Lynne is back as Arlo's long term girlfriend but I think it's over for them. It's a sweet predictable film. It's ideal for family viewing.
Okay, It's Shelley Duvall's last performance. She played Mama whose son, Rico, is a mess of a human being. He is either a monster or damaged beyond repair. The film especially the writing doesn't make anything clear for the viewers. I would have only seen it for Shelley's final performance. It's a shame that she didn't do more. The script and the storylines don't make sense to me as a viewer. I truly have no idea what is really going on with the main character, Rico. The actor who played Rico does an admirable job. I just wished he cleaned up a little bit. Dee Wallace has a tiny role as his boss. The other characters just don't make any sense. I see this film is dedicated to horror film directors. It's an independent so you can't be too harsh on it. Independent films don't have the budget. The film made me realize how much we missed Shelley Duvall after all these years.
Except for Kristin Rudrud in a cameo, much of the onscreen talent came from outside twin cities, Kirstie Alley was perfect as the mom, former beauty pageant winner and emcee. The cast included young talent like Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy and Kristen Dunst. Ellen Barkin is great as Amber's mother who lives in a trailer park. The film has a lot of fun and memorable scenes. The film hasn't really aged badly. Allison Janey was great as Loretta, Amber's neighbor and best friend. Will Sasso was great in the movie. A lot familiar faces appear here. Mindy Sterling played the pageant manager. Denise Richards was great as Becky. A funny entertaining film overall.
