MacShayne: Winner Takes All
(1994)

Entertaining Movie
Well this was a great way to spend an evening, I mean it's obviously well atleast at the end ] a pilot for a hoped series of movies or TV series, but in it's self it's an entertaning few hours.

Kenny rogers is a recently released "con" who checks into a hotel looking for his ex-wife and gets embroiled in a plan to rob a casino in Las Vegas.

With guest appearances by a number of known faces from the world of TV most noticeably Barry Newman, still known to people of my generation as the hopeless house builder but un-beatable lawyer Petrocelli.

This is a nice movie, with good action sequences and enough twists to keep you interested.

One thing though either there was an injury of the main star or something 'cause he seemed to do a good stunt fight early on then they put in a not very similar stunt man for a sequence that seemed little more than a scuffle, not sure why there.

But definatly worth checking out.

Eskimo Limon
(1978)

ONE OF THE BEST FILMS EVER MADE
Well now then after a comment like that how can I back it up. Well firstly by stating that this is obviously a subjective view.

But to the movie.

This was released in the UK on video in the early 1980's. It's the story of Benji, Bobby and Huey, well atleast those were the names in the English translation. This is an Israeli [not sure if that's how you spell that but you get the point] movie. It tells the story of the Boys search for Love and..... Sex basically. Making the point early on that the two are not necessarily connected.

Benji the "quiet" one falls for a girl who he invites to a party, she says no but then turns up with his best friend, the `good looking' one, True to life or what! She eventually succumbs to Bobby's advances, and gets pregnant, at which point he dumps her. Benji stands by her organising an abortion and paying for it, well I never said this was a family film. At which point as soon as they return home .. well check out the end yourself, if you can get a copy that is, why I don't know but this is almost impossible to obtain a copy of. Other stories revolve around the boys visit to a prostitute, their catching of an embarrassing condition, And their run in with an Italian nymphomaniac while delivering ice.

So basically if you want to categorise this movie it's a sex comedy set in the 1960's. But it's more than that. For a start it has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard, and the story and characterisation is in my opinion well up to the standard of Hollywood

In Deep
(2001)

Very good undercover cop drama
Well the first episode of this new series has finished and i for one really enjoyed it. It puts a newish twist on cop dramas. The two leads Nick Berry [ Eastenders, Heartbeat ] and Stephen Tompkinson [ Drop the Dead Donkey, Ballykissangel ]have proven themselves elsewhere and seem to gel well. The stories ( this first one at least ) seem to have enough surprises to keep you guessing right to the end. Even though the BBC do seem to have an unfortunate habit of showing too much as a trailer for the second episode at the end of the first, and seem to re-cap 85% of the first at the start of the second.

In the first story Nick's character has to investigate his old Squad, which is now run by his Wife's best friend's husband who is also a close friend of his. "Garth" Tompkinsons character, gets involved with the lives of the Prostitutes he's using to try and get information on a Madame who is running them.

All stories mix and leads to a stage where almost everyone is under suspicion of something and your left guessing till the very end what the outcome will be.

Check this series out. It deserves to run for quite a while...which probably means it'll be cancelled after one season, as seems to be the norm these days for anything that dares to be innovative or different from the diet of soap operas and makeover shows that fill 80% of the schedules these days.

The Advocate's Devil
(1997)

Very clever legal drama
A very clever legal drama, shown on television but one i would definitely have paid money to see. A Defence lawyer gets more involved in a case than he would like due to his client threatening his daughter.

Excellent performances by all the cast, who i must admit I've never seen in anything else, or atleast i don't think i have. they may have been in something but not impacted on me.

Hire it or catch it on TV, you won't be disappointed.

The Green Mile
(1999)

Dry my eyes and insist you must see this film
Well I've just this second finished watching the Green Mile, and felt I must post something. The acting was superb and Michael Clarke Duncan should definitely have got the Oscar. Tom Hanks was as great as ever and the other supporting cast were to a man perfect for the roles. This was film making at it's best, it may have been 3 hours but it didn't seem like it. I've seen films a fraction of that length that have dragged interminably.

The scene of the last execution ( I won't say who's encase you haven't seen it yet ) was one of the most moving I've ever seen.

The story while involved was engrossing and the effects spectacular. More over it was a story of hope and good overcoming evil. And will definitely be a must buy when it's released on "Sell Thru"

The Karen Carpenter Story
(1989)

A Brilliant Movie
I think this was an excellent movie which tells the life story of one of the Popular music greats of our time.

Love or loath their music [ i love it ] you can't ignore their impact on the genre. With songs that even now are a staple of most Weddings.

This movie starring, a very underrated in my opinion actress, Cynthia Gibb was excellent. The scene that stands out for me was the original try out in the studio where she tries to sing at the [ excuse the probably wrong phrase here, i am the only living Welshman with no musical talent what so ever ] key her brother starts on then he realises his mistake and changes to the key she should sing in. Makes my hair stand on end every time i see it.

If you've seen this movie you know what i mean if not GO SEE IT you won't be disappointed.

Cold Feet
(1997)

funniest comedy on television [ including FRIENDS ] !
Cold feet a comedy about couples, sex, love, families & sex...they seem to like sex...........then again who doesn't!!

This is British comedy better than its best, this is COMEDY at its best. It'll stand against all others. And this is not only because the gorgeous Helen Baxendale is in it.

The series starts 6 months after the one off play finished. All the couples are still together [ just ] despite the best attempts of Parenthood, sex problems [ told you they liked it ] money troubles and a forgotten Wedding, i won't tell you whose if you haven't seen it yet.

This is comedy for grown ups, not only because of the racy content, both visual & verbal, but because it makes you think as well as laugh.

Watch it you'll LOVE IT. And it must have done a wonder for the sale of roses!

The Heat Is On
(1989)

And it's cookin'
This video shows the making of what I think is the best stage musical ever, it shows the work taken to put on a modern musical with the performances, tempers, problems and even dangers you would not necessarily associate with the "Theatre". The original cast are still the best and this video gives you a chance for the next best thing to seeing them perform the roles live....Long run Miss Saigon and I can't wait for Miss Saigon - the Movie hint hint.

The Patriot
(1998)

A Good film
I've just seen the Patriot, released directly to Sky television in the UK I was expecting a really bad film, but I enjoyed it.

Okay it may not be as action packed as his earlier movies but if you watch this film in its own right rather than an unofficial Under Seige part III then i think it stands up very well.

As to someone's point that the action was just "tagged on" rubbish, I thought it was relevant to the story at that point.

Road House
(1989)

They thought he was bigger
A very underrated movie, okay you can put your brain in neutral and coast for an hour or so, but hell thats the fun of the movies we don't all want Macbeth or Disease of the week movies.

Patrick Swayze plays a "Cooler" [head bouncer] who is hired to clean up a small town bar. He runs up against the town bad guy and has to fight not only the drunks but his henchmen, he is helped by Wade Garrett his mentor.

Good action packed fun give it a go you'll be surprised.

Dirty Dancing
(1987)

Time of your life...all your life
This is a great movie, The music, The Stars, the dancing [ even though i can't do it! ]

The story is of "Baby" a young girl taken on holiday by her parents to a "Holiday Camp" she falls for the dance instructor and....for the rest, see the movie you'll love it!

Patrick Swayze is excellent so is Jennifer Gray.

Grease
(1978)

IS THE WORD!!
Grease is an excellent movie based on a stage musical, although you get extra songs in the movie. It revolves around some of the oldest high school kids in the U.S. [ though if you see the stage play this is partially explained as the show is told in "flashback" at a school reunion.

John Travolta and Olivia Newton John are the stars and deserve all the credit they got. In a smallish part is Lorenzo Lamas in his pre long hair "Renegade" [ American TV series ] days.

The Music is brilliant, the comedy spot on and the attention to detail is.... exactly as i want it to have been considering i wasn't born until 1967 :o)

See it! especially if you can catch the re-release for it's 20th anniversary in the cinemas. [ god i suddenly feel old. :o) ] as i saw it twice in it's opening week in the UK all those years ago.

Boogie Nights
(1997)

a great movie
I think this was a great movie, just seen it and the performances especially Burt Reynolds were excellent. As someone else said maybe a little over long and it dragged in the middle for about 15 mins but all in all brilliant, the music brought back many memories and the attention to detail very acurate [ from what i remember ]
