Runaway Bride
(1999)

Well done!
Different from PRETTY WOMAN, but with enough similarities to add to the fun. Richard Gere looks better than ever - he definitely improves with age. And Julia Roberts looks great, despite less than flattering wardrobe, hair, and make-up throughout the movie - how does she do that?! The plot is kind of silly, but there is enough quality in the dialogue and acting that it makes for an entertaining flick. Larry Miller and Hector Elizondo, both in PRETTY WOMAN, return for small, but choice parts. The scene where Gere and Roberts bargain for rights to her interview is lifted directly from PRETTY WOMAN. Guys, it may be a "chick flick" but its a good one for date night. You may even enjoy it.

Doctor Dolittle
(1998)

Give it a chance
I went into the movie expecting a typical hilarious Eddie Murphy-centered comedy. And when it didn't happen, I started to leave. Then I got interested in Lucky, the dog, and the other animals at the vet's office and decided to give it another chance. By the time Lucky high-stepped out of the vet's, I was laughing. Listen to the animals - the human actors are there only because they have to be. I am an animal-lover and found the movie to be funny and touching. By the end, I envied Dr. Doolittle and can't help but wonder what my cat is saying to me when he has that funny look on his face.

Baja Oklahoma
(1988)

Definitely for Texans
This is a gem of a TV movie, especially for Texans. And as a TCU alum, I really enjoyed the brief allusions to the school and its not-so-hot football team. Dan Jenkins has a quirky writing style which he translated to the screen with aplomb. Swoosie Kurtz is a stitch and portrays the adventure-seeking housewife to the hilt. Although you won't see it in most of her biographies, this is one of Julia Roberts' early films, and she makes the perfect daughter for Leslie Ann Warren's character. Willie's brief and unexpected appearance will be enjoyed by his fans and is the perfect conclusion to this little treat.

Top Gun
(1986)

Hot action, cool music.
This is a thrilling jet-jock action movie with a fantastic musical score. You cannot help but turn up the volume. But whoever chose Kelly McGillis? Big mistake. She's too big, too old, and too plain for the part. She and Tom Cruise are like oil and water - just don't mix. So ignore the "romance" and focus on the action and music and let them "take your breath away!"

There's Something About Mary
(1998)

Word of Advice to Guys
Just a word of advice to all the guys who find this movie so hysterical: go with a GUY friend, not a LADY friend. Most women who are thinking, feeling adults will find this movie repulsive, boring, and possibly disturbing (that men find it so darn funny). Take your lady to see Titanic.
