True Detective: Night Country: Part 6
(2024)
Episode 6, Season 4

Bad, bad season
I really liked all previous seasons. Even de second one. This is not on par. First the character are tottaly unprofessional...and actually criminal. Brutal, unlikeable nor with much traces of humanity.

This mix of magic realism and feminist manifesto has all the right checkmark of identity politics.

But, just considering the storytelling the last episode is ludicrus.

The cleaning ladies/avengers, magical thinkers, crazy killers is just too much.

One has to consider that the detectives and other "good guys" kill more people than the actual criminals.

Away is the mix of the profoundly human and deeply flawed characters of the first 3 season, now its just a lot of crazy people.

Bad, Bad season.

Paradise
(2023)

Not bad, but the premise is to unrealistic
Not bad, but the premise is to unrealistic.

1. First that you have to give up you DNA? Why not just copying it, like thousands of higschoolers do right now.

2. If they can repare aging with DNA ¿why not just using the damage one? Or the information of the "good one" One can't avoid thinking that there is a underlying leitmotiv about a zero sum game in human interaction...like the capitalistic model.

But in reallity, despite the greed and all of human defects, it´s not how it develops.

Having seen a lot of this type of movies, don't like them because they don't respect natural logic or behaviour.

Even in movies with total disregard of science (Star Wars), the human interactions are real, how real people react to opression.

But in this type of movies, people just act as vehicles to the action and message.

The Tiger's Tail
(2006)

A dissapointing movie overall
The subject is interesting enough and the first 2/3 of it is interesting although rather far-fetched, but the ending I found to be so disappointing, not deciding between a romantic comedy, a brothers drama or a police farce.

What happened? The director shied away from a more brutal, and potentially, more interesting resolution.

Also, the introduction of "political" allegories destroys the point of a crime thriller.

Would rather make a small comment on those political comments, 17 years later, Ireland is still a very rich country and those catastrophic predictions were all wrong. Nor did Ireland collapsed, nor did they turn to socialist politics.

More culturaly bias panflets
It´s very tempting for europeans and north americans to idialize "exotic" cultures.

I'm chilean, like most chilean, I'm from mixed spanish and native heritage. But our culture is not native. It has native elements that survive in day to day meals, names, etc. But is mostly spanish (language, clothing, education, religion, etc.) There is now a very serious conflict in the region of the country depicted in the movie. Most of it due to narco/ethninc/extreme left bands. What started as legitimate politcal movements 30 years ago, to obtain political and social improvments for their people, has transform into mostly crimminal assocition involved in drugs, arms trafficking and also kidnapping and murder.

Most mapuche killings involve other mapuche people of rival gangs. It's a very sad and violent situation. It's a poor region, and all the criminal activities don't allow the government (current, a very left coalition, or previous ones, moderate left or right governments, to do much improvement).

This type of movies perpetuate a "first world" view of other countries, where this "pure and innocent" native culture should be left like human zoos.

What a lovely movie
I know that is not fashionable to say a movie is lovely but find no other better expression.

The acting and the subtle romance developing amidts the trial. You see the smile of Sidse Babett Knudsen as she hears the nervous judge speaking about his love for her is so tender and sweet, as is the amused judge liberated of his cold and hard judicial persona.

The rest of the cast, from the tense silence of the wife and the few word the accused says, all of them are so natural and expressive.

Really enjoyed the movie, which moves in a calm but constant pace that make you feel almost surpised when it ends.

Beautiful.

Los que aman odian
(2017)

Good story but the movie lacks emotional impact
Maybe because Lopilato is such a bud actress, maybe it´s de production design lacks details and budget, but the movie feels fake.

Read the novel many years ago and had this sad atmosphere in an wild natural setting.

The other actors are fine, but the movie felt flat.

The ending was rushed and some characters should have had better background.

Nightmare Alley
(2021)

Long and flat
This movie is as boring as can be. The storyline is so predictable that the moment they say someting you know 40 minutes in advance what will happen. "Don't do the ghost show".....one knows it will be one.

"I don't drink..." you know he will end up either as Pete or de animal in the cage.

"Beware of the red and blue boxes"...and you know how Pete will die.

Nothing happens that can be perceived as surprising or creative.

Just 3 stars, one for the acting, one for the photography and one...just because.

Long and boring, because it has no surprises or twists.

one can suspend disbelief.....to a certain point...don't watch it
If you agree with the wildly violent and corrupt premise of the movie....you can enjoy it. Nevertheless, what a stupid, ilogical and nonsensical endinhng. What a waste of time. Don't watch it!

Ad Astra
(2019)

This is a really bad movie
I was so waiting to see it, and my dissapoinment was so big. Not only the silly technical and scientific nonesence (lunar gravity, lunar pirates....(OMG, mars gravity, times to travel and to send laser signals to jupiter) It's the plot, this cold and pragmatic man justs cross the solar system to say "I love you Dad" and everything os ok.....??? ANd the way he enters the rocket.....yeahhh right So we are alone and we are fine. I get it. And the dad kills a lot of people just to phone home? so bad it hurts

El secreto de sus ojos
(2009)

So good, it lingers in your mind, the comedy, the horror and love
Not easy to write about a movie that so seamlessly and naturally combines humor, and really good one, with a greater than life romance and crimes, in the backdrop of political turmoil and chaos. The mystery within the mystery is so hypnotic that you can see it several times and not get bored and every detail, every shot and camera angle. A true masterpiece that will resonate to local audiences for many years and yet endure the universality themes of love, envy, sacrifice and friendship. If you haven't see it...go on and do so. One of the best pictures ever....and I'm a Star Wars fan.

Chef
(2014)

Loved this light hearted and tender movie
Just wanted to take a couple of minutes to review the movie. First, some disclosure, I cook a lot and I'm overweight also, so just miss the hoy Cuban wife to really see myself in the main character. Watching the characters cook and bonding in a kitchen being happy for making other happy through beautiful and tasty food is totally right. You have to experience it to understand how well depicted the feeling is. Working a kitchen, hot, quick and in perfect synchronization is heartwarming experience that I can relate to. The Cuban music is just another expression of the passion the characters feel and the love they share. As for the lack of a real conflict or big break through is just as things happen in reality. People who can start doing what they love again, just start enjoying and loving others. Really simple and beautiful to watch. Also liked the wise, beyond his years, son character and the Sofía Vergara's one. Besides being pretty, she can convey the true love she feels for both (father and son). It's not a bad thing that there are no bad characters. Artificial conflict just to make plot move is not necessary when simply living and growing does the trick.

Elysium
(2013)

stupid story so inconsistent that prevents to enjoy it
if you are a rich person who has a heal it all machine ¿woudn't you rent it? ¿to make more money perhaps? ¿why go to space? ¿whoudnt it be easier to build an habitat on earth? ¿whou feeds the billions on earth? it's clear that the writer/director has all the guilt fantasies of rich people who have never known a poor person not all poor people are Mexican gangster, most of them are hard working, decent, clean and good people. 4, just because of the CGI, awesome, the rest, included Jodie Foster's performance (she only lacks the mustache to be a matinée villain)horrible. not to forget....you have the entire code for the survival of your habitat in only one place, and with no-one guarding it?

Tattingers
(1988)

Remember liking the show
May be it's true what other are saying about this show and had some faults in script. But it had a rather sad and humorous tone that got me. Also the character were funny and caring which also added to the formula. I remember to have been very disappointed when the series ended. Part of my longtime affair with cooking comes from this show. The music was great and the friends of Nick added a variety of making new episode arcs. Should the show have continued, I guess it might have become a sort of gourmet/detective story, even more interesting, with the cooks and family helping in the cases. That would have been something. Goog show.

The Road
(2009)

Nonsense movie with lots of style
Watching 2 hours of depressing nonsense is painful, but thinking that's something profound about it, is just silly. ¿in ten o more years only criminals figure it out how to organize and defend? ¿good people is weak and stupid and hopeless? The father spends all the picture teaching the boy not to trust people, despite the boys desire and all the talk about the fire within. One minute after his dead, his find a nice family and they live happily ever after. ¿What if they have gather nice families together a couple of years earlier, defend themselves and make a living? Tries too hard to sound intelligent, but the premise is stupid. Bad movie because of a bad script, all the rest (cast, photography, design, effects, etc.) is excellent, but not enough.

Babylon A.D.
(2008)

They forgot to shoot the second half
The movie was actually very interesting and entertaining. All the trip and the relation with the cult was OK, but after they arrived to USA the tired to wrap things up very quickly and forgot the second half of the movie. What is the relation with the high priest? Why did she die? What happened with the cult? How did Diesel live? Why did the cult stop to search the daughters? It reminds me the "Riddick Chronicles", same mess up script. On the other hand, the action is OK and the production is interesting. But the script is bad. I find little bit annoying to have to write 10 lines al least. ¿what happened with less is more? Anyway, this is my comment.
