Paulie
(1998)

Wonderful family movie!
This was the best family movie - that wasn't animated - that I've seen in a long time. The story was endearing - a young girl with a speech problem receives a parrot for a pet. The bird helps Marie, the young girl, to overcome her speech problem but helps her into a bit of trouble too. Marie's father thinks it would be best if the girl was parted from her pet. Immediately after their separation Paulie is on a quest to be reunited with his Marie. He touches the lives of so many people along the way and touched my life as I watched the story unfold. Great acting and great story line. It's a definite "see it more than once" film.

There's Something About Mary
(1998)

HILARIOUS
I'm not sure if this movie had a strong story line or not. I love a good comedy though and this film is nothing but a two hour series of one-liners that keep even hard-core Scrooges in stitches. I even found myself laughing at things that were definitely not "PC" to find humorous. The writers and the actors/actresses were able to deliver these lines and make them seem actually funny and not derogatory. KUDOS!

Almost Heroes
(1998)

Dedication to Chris Farley?!
I'd grade the movie a B - but only because my favorite person in all of TV and film land is Matthew Perry! The story line leaves MUCH to be desired. Several valiant attempts to breath life into the waning film (by not only Perry but Farley and some of the "lesser-knowns" also) just isn't enough to save it's life. My largest gripe with this movie, however, was that there wasn't a dedication to Chris Farley. I sat thru the entire list of credits waiting to see, "In Memory of Chris Farley" or some sort of mention of his passing. Nothing! Shame on all of you. Since his passing certainly wasn't forgotten I'm assuming it was a deliberate - cruel - decision to not mention his passing. I only hope whoever the person was who made the decision to not dedicate the film to Chris Farley's memory meets Chris at the Pearl Gates - how funny it would be if Mr. Farley held that person's pass into the hereafter!

Holy Man
(1998)

Aborted roller coaster ride!
I sat through the entire movie thinking the very next line was going to be the comedy line that gets the ball rolling and magically transforms the film into the comedy genre it was billed as. In the end I had the feeling that I had ridden a roller coaster to the top of the big drop only to be backed down the hill without having ever taken off. I was expecting a hilariously funny film as are most of Eddie Murphy's. Even Jeff Goldblum let me down as he wasn't able to pull off any of his famous one-liners that stick in your head for a week after you walk out of the theater. The editors even missed their mark with a very noticeable stain on a white robe that changed sizes and shapes several times in one scene. Maybe next time people.

Ever After
(1998)

Fairy Tale Gone Awry
This movie relies on a tried and true story line as the strong link holding this film up - the

fairy tale story of boy finding and falling in love with girl. I think something was lost in the translation - "Am I on house arrest?" for heaven's sakes how long has house arrest been a term that people are familiar with? Also, Drew Barrymore could have exerted just a bit more effort into the role of Danielle. She pulled off a mediocre performance but the character was such a charming one and Drew Barrymore really is a talented actress- Danielle really could have been a GREAT character instead of just a good one. All in all, though, I was able to lose myself in another era for a couple of hours and that was enjoyable.

Titanic
(1997)

Beautiful story
What negative things can be said about Titanic? None as far as I'm concerned. It was a beautiful love story set inside a very real tragedy. This movie achieves the same thing the movie Old Yeller did - a person wants to see it time and time again in hopes that Old Yeller (Jack Dawson in this case) will make it this time. It was a perfect movie in that the story line, the acting, and the directing are all executed flawlessly.

Hope Floats
(1998)

Very good movie
This movie really hits that "date movie" mark. I loved it. And, OH MY GOD!, little Mae Whitman who played Bernice deserves the Oscar for her crying scene when she is trying to leave with her father. It was definitely a four "Kleenexer" for me. It makes those of us who live in the city actually wish we could head off to small town America to start over.

G.I. Jane
(1997)

You don't have to prove yourself - Demi
Demi Moore is a talented actress - there's no doubt in most of our minds about that. It seems there may be some doubt about it in Ms. Moore's mind however - why else would she have accepted such a role. In seeing her on screen in GI Jane - one gets the feeling that Demi is imitating the Little Engine That Could. Instead of her true acting ability shining through one senses a desperateness that is evident on the screen - Demi is mentally telling herself, "I think I can act this role..." and all other sounds are background to this din. Sorry Demi!

Fools Rush In
(1997)

Bullseye!
I believe the strived for results are hit right on in this movie: a mismatched couple find themselves in love thus begins their battle against several outside opposing forces. The couple faces the obstacles head on with humor and overcome them. Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek truly are a talented pair and apparently enjoyed working in this movie - as both of the leading people in this movie had a shining on-screen personality. GREAT WORK!
