Free Enterprise
(1998)

Glorious
As a male who hates Star Trek I was evidently dubious. Within 30 seconds I was hooked and it just didn't stop. A perfect movie: one which sets out to achieve something and realises its aims and more. Hilarious, brilliantly acted and directed, this is straight into my top 10 of the year (and I am so choosy that sometimes I can't actually find 10). Outdoes most of the 'hip' movies and 'cult' directors of the last 5 years with room to spare. As soon as it finished I wanted to watch it again.

Festen
(1998)

Stunning
Mindblowing. Gobsmacking. Shattering. One of the most moving and brilliant films it's been my luck to see. Don't read about the plot beforehand though!

Velvet Goldmine
(1998)

Pretentious disaster
It must have been terrible working on this film: you can only imagine the 'crazy' ideas that the wacky team must have been patting themselves on the back about. Self-indulgent, poorly acted, scripted and atrociously directed: a money back movie if ever there was one. Visually cheap. Hearts of Fire was better than this, and I for one would rather have watched a Bowie/Bolan/Ferry bio instead.

The Last Seduction II
(1999)

Offensive and cheap - a truly terrible movie
This is a tawdry, cheap and offensive little movie that should have been strangled at birth. Not only an offense to the brilliant film it allegedly is a sequel to, but to anyone who might rent or watch it on that strength. Dismally acted, scripted and shot, it is one of the genuinely worst movies I have had the displeasure to see.

Going All the Way
(1997)

Excellent movie
This is a great movie. Brilliantly acted, especially by Jeremy Davies, but also ably supported by Ben Affleck, it is sometimes very painful to watch and one of the very rare examples of a movie about post-adolescent angst that really works. Very moving, and the director as well as Davies ( the weedy guy in Saving Private Ryan) deserve to be very big.
