Ice Cold in Alex
(1958)

Typical great understated British war movie
Another example of the British film industry doing what they did best make character based movies that let the story do its job.No heroes here just four people with various reasons for being there working to get themselves out of the desert.

The actors play their parts with warts and all and without glorifying the part i.e. how many times have you seen actors playing drunks who actually seem more able bodied after having a skinfull? . Classic stuff .

I've always had the query about the beer being served in a Carlsberg class . Would a Danish beer be available in Egypt during WWII ? , either way the beer pouring at the end certainly is an endearing and lasting image .

Word of Honor
(2003)

Sad interpretation of stunning book
I loved the book , hounded my friends to read it and looked forward to a movie being made from the story. After the poor job that was made with The General's Daughter (another DeMille novel) my enthusiasm waned a little and when I saw that Don Johnson was in the movie my enthusiasm waned even further.

But the ratings given on IMDb and the comments left made me hopeful, after now seeing the film I have to wonder if it is members of the Johnson family who have voted here.

The film has made a number of major changes to the story line and the casting of Don Johnson son to play the young Tyson is laughable, though not as laughable as the casting of the young and middle aged nun who not only grew old in the film but also changed ethnicity ! I was hugely let down with this movie and can only hope that it someone else will attempt to film it with a decent budget, a credible cast, a recognized director and a screen writer who doesn't move far from the original story.

Mackenzie's Raiders
(1958)

Favourite television show as a kid
Haven't seen it since the 60's , but somehow my sister found a kid's T-Shirt with a couple of horses and Mackenzie Raiders printed on it a couple of years ago!!!

How a T-Shirt of a 50's American western series that hasn't been shown on Australian TV in 40 odd years turns up in 2nd hand store in Brisbane, Australia I don't know but my boy now wears it around .

Though my memory grows dim it was a good series although they always had to stop their pursuit at the border and that did irk me at the time , if I can remember that it still must!

With a lot of 50's television westerns now getting released on DVD I hope they get around to releasing some episodes and I hope I am not disappointed if they do .

The Magic Sword
(1962)

Do not judge by today's standards as a skeptic
I like so many of commentators here saw this film as a child on TV and loved it. I couldn't remember the name of it and scoured the movie books when I grew up until I found it. When I saw it on video I bought it and showed it to my preschooler who watched and watched it until the video started to wear out. I had a friend come over and when he saw it on the shelf he was delighted as he too had the same memories , his preschooler now has it as his favourite movie.

You can't judge this film as an adult because it wasn't aimed at adults , if you want to pick holes in it you can but if a kid can use his imagination to smooth over the poor effects and acting why can't adults? Let yourself go into the fantasy, relive a little of your childhood and let your kids get wrapped up in it as well . Great kids adventure .

Dog Soldiers
(2002)

War Movie with Werewolves
Enjoyed the film greatly , some great black humour , lots of violence and gore - if it had gratuitous nudity it would be a complete blokes movie.

However it does have weaknesses in the story line and special effects , from the extras on the DVD the wolfen have a lot of facial features and moving parts however this is rarely seen in the film. Their first appearances in the film are very fleeting and considering the work put into the effects this seems a waste.

I get the feeling that the film was aimed at the broad audience (read US here) and it gives some unsubtle clues to whats going to happen next.

Writers have unashamedly copped a lend of some previous movies story threads eg Zulu & Aliens which add\subtract from the greater good of the story. The weapons division looking for a Werewolf to work for them thread was totally unnecessary and the film doesnt need a bad guy when you have a pack of monsters running around eating people.

In summary its well worth a look and a welcome addition to the horror/action genre.

The General's Daughter
(1999)

A great book turned into a poor movie.
I am a big fan of Nelson De Mille's books and have often wondered why they have never been turned into movies, after seeing what was done to this book I'm glad they haven't.This movie throws information at you , is an absolute no-brainer as a who-dunnit , leaves out so many parts of the story and yet adds stuff for no purpose. The director, screenwriter and Travolta (is it just me or is Travolta's over acting getting worse every film he does , perhaps we should blame his non directors) deserve no praise with what they've done here.If I hadn't read the book I would have been disappointed with the film , as i have I just hope the crew of this film never get a go at Word Of Honor (De Mille's best book).
