The Locusts
(1997)

Unsure, need to see it again...
This came on at 4:40 AM this morning, and I was tired, but tried to catch it all. I didn't, and so want to see it again, but I think I caught most of the necessary details. Vince was much better, more thorough, full, than what I've seen him in before (which isn't much) and now I'll expect more. Judd, Davies, and Rudd are also fairly unfamiliar, but now I'll get at them too. They were all fine, but I want that second viewing. I'll probably tape it, but it only came on once this month here. Maybe I'll rent it. Certainly not upbeat, but so is life sometimes. The actors had me reacting with both anger and tenderness, so I hope that won't be lost next time.

As for other mentioned films, Cat left me cool, Hud I love, and remaking Streetcar sans Leigh, Brando, Hunter, et al, is fruitless, even with full dialogue.

I'm much more on the positive side with this one so far...hope it lasts...

Flesh-Eating Mothers
(1988)

Awful? Yes!!
But it's so bad it's fun! It really is one of those that is so awful that you can laugh yourself silly watching it!

Fawlty Towers
(1975)

Truly one to be treasured!!
Oh, man! I started laughing at this 20 or 21 years ago. I've managed to tape them from PBS (while I ought to just buy the set), and bought the scripts for the shows. Everything is so funny with this. The situations, the writing, the characters, certainly the execution. Only 12 episodes, but like many here I can watch them over & over again and still laugh like crazy. Even reading the scripts can make me laugh. And little things like the changing sign in the opening, finally being able to catch a glimpse of "I Kno-ow" Audrey, or the ingredients of a Ritz Salad (ever offered one to a guest?), just make this show untouchable . A benchmark among comedies!!!

Halloween
(1978)

Sure scared me back in 78
I was 20 back in 1978, and saw this on opening weekend. I knew nothing of it, and after growing up on the old Hammer films, followed by a period of almost nothing, this was quite a nice surprise. It really worked! Had me checking the back seat in cars, gave me a sinking feeling when I lost my keys, etc. The low death toll and relative lack of blood, as compared to subsequent slasher films, has me really admiring how effectively it created the atmosphere & suspense that kept me on edge, and made me jump at the right places. I certainly don't jump any more at it, but I do have fun remembering what it was like watching it when the now-cliches were fresh & new. I laugh at the 'horror' flicks of the 30s & 40s, but when they were new, I bet they were something. And I bet in another 20 years, today's toddlers will find Scream/IKWYDLS, et al, to be tame and passe too, at least compared to what they'll (& I'll) be watching then!

I'm surprised at the number of people half my age who wish they could've been around to see this film when it was brand new!

Looking back, Halloween probably scared me more when it was new, than other horror movies have, when they were new. Horror films are indebted to Halloween for breaking some new ground, and I can't wait for the next horror film that will do something on a similar scale.
