D-Tox
(2002)

No Good.
D-Tox is one of the worst Stallone movies. In fact, it seems to be a TV/Cable movie more than one that was released at theatres.

Let´s go to what bothered me about it,

1) D-Tox plot script is horreondous. 2/3 ideas (really cliched ones) make this film. The cross between two types of films (slasher + action thriller) does not go well.

2) Great actors but... what can I say about it? Kristofferson, Patrick, Berenger, Vance, etc to name some of them. All of them spoiled all over the film. Few acting (that is not a bad premise to a film of this characteristics) but as the action is also no good... could be a better thing to enchance dialogues and some acting of the named actors.

3) If you make a slasher movie, try to make it violent. If you make a slasher movie, try to make it suspenseful. D-tox lacks both. Its not violent (could be much more gorier) nor suspensful. All deaths are pretty obvious and you wont jump off the seat anytime during the 90 minutes.

4) Direction is awful. Dont understand why a director with a big budget did this. I understand that a lot of money went to the cast, but please...

This movie with another director could be much better. No style at all.

Rate it with a 3 out of 10.

Nueve reinas
(2000)

Great Bielinsky work.
This is another movie that shows the resurrection of Argentina film industry. Is clearly one of the best Argentina movies in the past years. Its very interest how the director shows Buenos Aires, not only in a decadent way as much of our films does (which is not a critic to them), and over everything, it´s original comparing to the what we have seen recently. Fabian Bielinsky has a different and interesting style of filming.

Ricardo Darin is excellent, the best of the film. Gaston Pauls made an interesting portrait of its character, and the secondary cast made the plot run smooth. A great story with a surprising ending (it reminds me of the "Usual suspects" one). Although this movie seems to have a lot of US independant filmography characteristics, it has an obvious Argentinian touch that make it a top movie.

I don´t agree with TomyGrau opinion. I think that Argentina cinematography is excellent, for an obvious reason, when you have a low budget to make a movie (with few efforts from the state, not knowing if it will be released in theatres, or will ever see the money invested again) you have to make something different and original to succed. They do not copy classics.

Lots of Argentina movies were original and they succed. Examples in the last 5 years, "Pizza Birra Faso", "Mundo Grua" or "9 Reinas", None of them have a message. They just tell a story or are a description of our reality. There are very few Tango-like examples around by now.

Best 2000 Argentina movie with "Felicidades" & "76-89-03".

Arlington Road
(1999)

Good movie with an excellent ending.
This is good movie. No more than that. A nice entertainment.

The acting is really excellent, more specifically the Tim Robbins character, although Jeff Bridges & Joan Cusack are great too. I have to say also that what were also amazing were the action sequences... very realistic in contrast with most of the modern action-thriller movies. The blood component is quite efficient here. Another thing to remark is the twisted ending it has... not a chance someone could guess it 5 minutes before it happens.

But the movie has one important flaw. In my opinion, the movie gets too long... there is a lack of action in the first 45 minutes that makes them sort of tedious, the film could be 15 minutes shorter. The other thing I did not like is the Jeff Bridges´s girlfriend character...

As I said, overall is a good movie, no more than that.

I rate this movie with a 6 out of 10.

El manosanta está cargado
(1987)

How could anyone rate this movie !!!
One of the best Argentine comedians of all time (if not the best) stars this picture, mighty ALBERTO OLMEDO who died in 1989.

This is his top alone movie (not counting the ones that made with JORGE PORCEL); it´s about a common man that is tired of being treated as stupid, and start treating the other people like that, saying that he is a Brazilian "manosanta" (person that cures people´s problems).

You cannot ask anything else for this type of comedy. The jokes are simple and effective. Lots of women barely nude. Some bad acting that contributes to the hilarious plot. The movie is so improvised that in some "dramatic" scenes you can see the actors laughing. And features a legion of excellent Argentine comedians (including Javier Portales, el "facha" Martel, Divina Gloria, etc)

What else could you ask for??? Just watch it and get your own conclusions.

I rate this movie with a 7 out of 10.-

La casa 3
(1988)

Great movie for what I expected !!!
I expected a very bad b-class italian horror movie, and it is, but is enjoyable. It´s well filmed & the actors are acceptable. Music is very good, just listen to that demoniac sound that is heard from the basement (not joking, one of the best horror sounds ever heard by me). There are also some good deaths (the first two & one in the middle), the others are average. Plot is bad, but you cannot expect more. What I did not understand are the stupid reasons for entering again and again the Ghosthouse (example: a girl wants to take a shower) when those kids know that there is a killer or somewhat (I won´t tell what). Scenery is good, so the other places of the shots. Summarizing, I watched the film till the end, that hardly happen when I see this type of movies and are bad.

I could recommend it if you are a horror-movie fan, or if there is anything to watch...

Les zinzins de l'espace
(1997)

Great cartoon...
Although I´m 20 years old and I really don´t like to watch cartoons, this one amazes me. I watch it every day. I really don´t understand why I like it, because when I was a child I preferd the "classic" cartoons such as He-man, Tom & Jerry & Mazinger... I can also say that I hate similar cartoons like ren & stimpy, but I find space goofs very intelligent, some chapters are too interesting and funny. Even my father laughed at some jokes!. It obviously has some bad chapters, but in general lines its a very good cartoon. What I hate about it is the two headed space creature... Recommended for everyone who wants to get disconnected for 30 minutes from this world & get relaxed...

Analyze This
(1999)

Good, but not that much...
This is an interesting movie, but is not so funny as it could be. It´s a newer & better version of "National Lampoon's The Don's Analyst" but this one is done well.

I liked the story though it could be funnier. I only laughed three times in the movie. Billy Cristal is better than other roles that he played in other films, but he do always the same characters. De Niro seems to have done the role so easily that some times his character look unreal (even thought he was a gangster in lots of films). Lisa Kudrow is lifeless as always; but there´s the excellent Joe Viterelli playing his part as the fat gangster.

The movie is well done, is efective but it only deserves a "good" rating, because is not innovative as it could be. I expected more about it, knowing that director Ramis made some funny films such as "As Good As It Gets" & "Airheads".

I rate this movie with a 5.5 out of 10 .-

Trance
(1998)

Watch anything but this movie!
I thought that I was never going to find a horror movie as bad as "The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre", but this film compete with it.

I´m not a person that get asleep when watching a movie, but I did it 15 minutes after the Trance started. I woke up, and started to watching it agian. Why did I deserve that? All the movie was a torture, I have to use fast forward to watch it complete.

I can´t stand why one of my favourites actors of all time (MR. WALKEN) could done this thing. I have to think that he made the director a favor, or he was really in the need of money, because film after film he is doing, he is ruining himself; and so fast...

What about the movie? it´s not scary, stupid plot, characters are awful (but I really liked the one played by Jared Harris), effects are very poor, lack of deaths & blood, etc; in three words, it has anything. And I mean it. Can´t stand how a director can make a film like this.

Anyway, When I got more disappointed was when I saw in the video cover, that the film was presented by "Stephen King", I think he could never present this crap, no? (I rented it in Argentina). I not recommend it in a million years.

I rate this movie with a 2 out of 10. (As I say in my "Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre" review, there will be always a worse movies, thats why it don´t deserves a 1 out of 10)

Jawbreaker
(1999)

Too Stupid for a normal person.
This movie shows me where is the US cinematography going, down ! An example of how money can be wasted in poor films. It features some of the dumbest scenes I´ve ever saw and all those stupid scenes make this movie that didn´t make me laugh not 1 time (and it´s supposed to be a comedy!).

A little question for everyone, In USA, are all the teenagers like are in the film? I really don´t want to think so because I rather smash my head to a wall than staying near those 2 girls that are supposed to be popular. And those teenagers are repeated from other movies such as "clueless" & "can´t hardly wait". I really nostalgic about a college movie such as the great "Porky´s" saga.

What can I say about the movie? It´s bad acted, it´s lack of a solid conflict (my 6 year old cousin can write a better plot than it), it´s not funny, has no realistic scenes, I really hated it. Nor one in my family could finished watching the movie, and I can say that they insulted me for the bad taste I had renting it (I really didn´t know what the film was about). I would not recommend it for anyone, even for all those who don´t want to think when watching a film.

I rate this movie with a 2.5 out of 10.

Psycho
(1998)

Like it!
I have to confess. I saw other Hitchcock´s movies but not the Psycho (1960) one, even though I´m a big movie fan. I read all the reviews about the remake of the classic, and they were very dissapointing, but I rent the movie for curiosity (it´s a little difficult to find Psycho/the original in a regular video store in Argentina). I really like it, it´s an excellent story (plot) and the actors involved in the film do their jobs very well. The only thing that I may criticize is that the movie could be faster (I know that the first psycho wasn´t and part of the spirit of the film is based on that) according today´s ones.Anyway, I would definetely rent the original if available.

I rate Psycho remake with a 6 out of 10 .-

The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre
(1994)

I prefer to puke upwards before watching this movie again !
Change the channel! Turn off the TV! Run! Kill me!

Those were part of the things I told to myself (obviously I was alone, cause nobody could stand in front of the TV looking at this movie more than 15 minutes) while watching this fu***** film! (Oh yeah, I stayed until the end - I deserve a price for my sacrifice).

Worse, Worst. A real disaster. I saw a lot of b-class movies and I think the worst one of them deserves an Oscar in comparison with this cr** (and is not a B-class one). I can´t even consider this a film. I think it´s with my top 5 worst movies ever. Not even Renee saves it.

Can´t understand people defending this film, it gives you no arguments to do so (not even one). I really tried to watch the movie knowing that it could be very bad, but this is beyond any critic I or anybody can do (I´m feeling a very big stupid commenting on it).

Worst film in years and what I´m really sure is that is far the worst horror or horror/comedy one ever.

I rate this movie with a 2 out of 10 (There is always something lower!)

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
(1998)

A good movie, but I expected more.
Everybody told me that was a very good movie. It´s only good (I think that is a little overated). Characters and the plot are excellent, the best of the film. But I expected more. What was dissapointing for me was the movie´s end. I thought that is was going to be a violent and cut-breathing one (such as the Robert Rodriguez "Desperado" action scenes) but wasn´t. All the matter resolves very quickly. But I have to take in consideration that is a 4 or 5 million film so, overall, it´s a movie that has to be seen.

I rate this movie with a 5.5 out of 10.

The Last Days of Disco
(1998)

Lifeless People
This movie has nothing. I had a lot of expectative for it, since it had good reviews in Argentina. But it was one of the boring movies I saw this year. The characters are from another planet. They never smile, never care about nothing, let the others pass over them, talk stupidities (all the movie), etc. Even the dancing scenes are boring (really don´t know how there was someone in the credits that made the coreography, because I think that a six years-old child without knowing anything about disco can do the same or better). All this things depressed me, because I can´t think in people living in such pointless and dull lifes.

I rate this film with a 3.5 out of 10 .-

Hijo del río
(1992)

A hard movie, but very real !
The movie is about marginal boys in Argentina. One of them is Juan, a "villero" that because it appearence is treated like scum. He and his friends start stealing and getting deeper into a violent a decadent world. It´s a good movie, but shows a reality that nobody wants to see (it destroys anyone spirit). I liked it, and really appreciate Capellari´s work (made the movie with a low budget). I would recommend "Pizza,Birra,Faso" before this, but this movie has to be seen to see the "other reality".

I give this movie a 5.5 out of 10

Perdita Durango
(1997)

Great Alex de la Iglesia movie.
As one Argentine critic said: "You love it or you hate it" -he rated the movie with an excellent-. I really love it and it´s because there aren´t so many movies such as this. Perdita Durango hasn´t a great plot, but this film really didn´t need it. It doesn´t matter if a scene has nothing to do with the plot, because this film doesn´t care about it. You have to be open-minded to watch it, with not so many expectatives about it, and you will like it very much. Remember that Perdita Durango wasn´t an expensive film. It has very hilarious parts, some gore ones (not so much), action, sex, deaths and some controversial themes and quotes. A nice bundle of things that I personally like in movies. The movie reminds me of some movies such as "Doom generation" and some parts of "From dawn till dusk".

I rate Perdita Durango with a 7 out of 10.

New Jack City
(1991)

A great gangster film.
This movie about the two brothers getting control of the drug dealing in New York is very good. After I saw this film I start seeing all ghetto and gangster movies out there. I think this is one of the best of them. Snipes acting in "New Jack City" is very good (and he acts, not like in other movies such as "Blade"), and the actors that join him too (the always efficient Ice-T,Mario Van Peebles,Chris Rock, etc). Van peebles is also a great director. The story is not so original as it could be but who cares?. This is one of the top 1991 movies.

I give this film an 8 out of 10.

In the Mouth of Madness
(1994)

One of my favourites horror movies.
This is one of my favourite horror films of all time. Only fantastic horror. I can´t find things to criticize because there aren´t. The plot, actors, scenery, the ending, all are great. Four films can only compete with this: Sam Raimi´s "Evil dead 2", Wes Craven´s "The people under the stairs", William Friedkin´s "The exorcist" and Robert Rodriguez´s "From dawn till dusk". No further discussions about the movie ratings, because they have to be (unless) above an 8.

Hits!
(1994)

It´s bad, and it can get worse.
I wait all the movie to see if it can get better. But it didn´t; it features one of the worst endings I´ve ever seen (it could have been better). The story, about two criminals in search of a briefcase, is very basic, and don´t have anything that may cause surprises to an usual spectator.

You don´t know if this film is in the action, drama or comedy genre (you don´t know what to expect about it), because it´s a mixture of the three of them. What is worse is that all the film happen inside a car. Even worse, those two delinquents are too stupid to complete the assignment. And the worst thing, is when the few deaths in the film happen (they seem to be part of a mute-movie, because you don´t even see the impacts of the bullets). If you have the chance of watching it, please don´t do it.

I give this title a 4 out of 10.

Porky's
(1981)

Nº1 comedy of all times.
How can the people vote an average of 5.5 on this movie?. Its not fair. I propose everyone to watch it again (I saw the 3 "Porky´s" movies more than 4 times) and then re-vote, because this movie deserves better ratings. Now you will think: "this movie is offensive and it´s sexual content is too much for me". Even if you are 90 years old, don´t tell me you didn´t think of doing (or didn´t do) what Pewee and friends do in this film because I don´t believe it. Now, look at Porky´s again; now pay attention to a pair of scenes in it that are antological: the one in the girl´s shower-room (I can´t describe it, you have to see it with your own eyes), and the one that comes after it (the gym professor telling the school director what happened in the shower-room). And I can count more like them. I think this movie is worth a look (and then some). It is hilarious and addictive (just read the other user comments about it). I don´t understand why there were no more "Porky´s"; they are essential to my mind and for everyone´s too. So please you people: be more open-minded. I give this excellent film an 8.5 out of 10.

Baxter
(1989)

The perfect puppet.
Even tho' I don´t like French movies, "Baxter" amazed me. The little bull-terrier dog looking forward killing or not (revealing the thoughts that pass through its mind). The scary young boy with an angel face who shows a growing dark side. Their disturbing friendship. These things make the plot very attractive and original. By the way: the final scenes are to be remembered. I give this title a 7.5 out of 10.

Fuga de cerebros
(1998)

A nice try
I think that this movie had to be similar to the excellent low-budget film "Pizza, Birra, Faso", because they have the same theme (marginal boys trying to survive), but this one did not completely satisfy my expectations. Why is that?: First, because is not so realistic as the other; second, because there are some things in the plot that I think that didn´t work (eg: the dreams that one of the boys had with a girl - they are totally out of context); Finally because the movie´s ending is very excessive. Despite what I have written, it´s a limited but interesting film, and a good attempt at an original movie. I think it's worth a look. I give this title a 6.5 out of 10.

El verso
(1996)

Don´t watch it, you will regret it!
I saw "El verso" in a cinema and I regret it up to this day. I saw the trailer, and I thought, what a funny movie?. But it wasn´t; the three or four jokes in the film appeared in the trailer so I didn´t laugh during it. Then I realized that it was a kind of drama.

"El verso" isn´t a great super-production. The scenery used in this title is very decadent. The story is very simple and unoriginal. Abel Ferrara´s "Blackout" and this, were the two worst films I´ve ever seen in the cinema. I don´t know how I didn´t fall asleep in it. The only thing that can rescue this movie are the magnificent actors that participate in it. I give this title a 3.5 out of 10.

Moebius
(1996)

The best sci-fi Argentinian movie.
Moebius is an example of what you can do with a low-budget (less than 250,000 $) film. It´s a great movie made by the students of the Universidad del Cine. I think it´s great for some reasons: first because these students had the courage to shot a sci-fi movie in Argentina, that involves many risks, such as never be shown in any cinema, or never finishing it because of subsidy problems (in my country these ones go to the titles that are seen by the major quantity of people, and not to the ones that are better). Second, because the plot makes you stay until the end of the movie and it´s one of the most original plots I´ve ever seen. Finally, because it´s not an improvised film; all the details of it were revised very carefully, and I can´t see any technical errors (that are common in other low-budget movies). I rate Moebius with an 8 out of 10.

Correccional de mujeres
(1986)

Grande Edda!
I can´t say that "Correccional de mujeres" is a good movie (because it isn´t), but I like the prison type ones, so I gave it a look (twice). The film features (I think) the only Argentinian B-class movie director ever, Emilio Vieyra. But, even being a bad movie, Edda Bustamante acts in it so, does it worth a look or not, eh?. I think that yes. If you are not convinced remember that this film & Edda´s body has inspired the Argentinian group Attaque 77 that made a tribute for her in their song "Caminando por el microcentro". What do you tell me about that, eh?.

Pizza, birra, faso
(1998)

One of the best low budget Argentine movies ever
This film illustrates a reality that almost all South American countries are living. The story is about four teenagers that have to steal to live, doing whatever they can to obtain some "pesos" . This film features lots of decadent scenes, that show the way of acting of these boys that can't get out of their sad reality even if they wanted so. Despite some technical problems in the film (due to low budget) this is one of the greatest Argentine titles released in the 90s. There's a curious thing, this film was almost not shown in cinemas due to a money problem that led to release complications. The international film festivals that Pizza, Birra, Faso won and the great numbers it did in the box office showed what an error that would have been. Really good. 8.5/10 .-
