One Day
(2011)

One day is not an epic romantic movie
Let's be clear. One day is not an Epic Romance. If that is what you are looking for. Go see "They way were were", "Same time in September", "Love story", maybe even "Little Romance" with Diane Lane. One more, "Notting Hill".

If you like watching Anne Hathaway and you are a fan of her like some of you were of Julia Robert then go see it. Actually Anne lips remind me of a younger Julia Robert.

The story well, I don't know, I didn't connect with them as I enjoyed "Notting Hill" for example. Some people claim Anne's British accent wasn't good. Well, it would have not matter. It is the story that suppose to be important here. I didn't read the book. Perhaps the book is so much better. I might get more details. You do the accent in your mind and it just might be perfect when you are reading, right? When it comes to the movie, well, it did not work for me.

When Emma spend the first night with Dexter she says that she doesn't know how to act in these situations. What? Any freshman from any college would have done more than just say I don't know what to do.

She is a high maintenance girl. He is a lover, manipulative, womanizer, cocky boy. Most women in general would fall for this guy and not the nice guy who she meets later in the movie. Well, the filmmaker make him that way. These scene were not great. No chemistry. Perhaps they were on purpose so you don't like this guy. On the other hand the scenes with Dexter were sometimes funny. More compatible and confrontational. They try to say what they felt.

Dexter would call her 5am in the morning, all drunk, drugged and almost out of life. She seems to be the greatest friend ever in the world to answer the phone and willing to talk to him to open his eyes. Another woman would just runaway the other way. Unless she is into drugs too and all that fast lane life.

The movie has its moments but it is not consistent. Very few laughs. This is not even close to "Notting Hill" which I was expecting a step higher. A new look. A new fresh look. Maybe it needs Sorkin to spice up the dialog an scenes.

So, if you enjoy Anne and her movie go see it but your boyfriend may not. Of course, who is paying the ticket. Good luck.

The Dancer Upstairs
(2002)

Why English?
Why it had to be spoken in English? It should have been in Spanish...it just does not makes sense for all these actor to speak English...it loses the touch...and people from Spain do not like to watch movies in English...they dub it to Spanish...I can understand if Bardem is acting as a Spanish that speaks English in an English speaking cast...but here it just looks ridicules...Well, better luck next time...I think the movie could have been much better in Spanish... John Malcovich should have thought of this...perhaps he did but did not take it into consideration...If you do not understand Spanish it might fly by...otherwise you get bored with all the Spanish actor talking in English...see what is going on here...English - Spanish...Spanish - English...

The Sex Inspectors
(2004)

Have a great sex life.
This is a show that is easy to watch. We all know there are tons and tons and tons and tons of information on the internet, tapes, DVD, other people, experts, doctors, therapist...well see what I mean.

This shows brings in a gentle way, for broadcasting on TV or cable, ways to perhaps consider with your partner to talk about it. Not the show but their sex life.

I mean, if you are going to watch this is because you are interested in what to do with your sex life. This is your case? mm-mm then you need to talk with your partner to see what to do. Based on this show it could trigger the idea of find more about your sex life and seek more info. If this show can help you trigger that idea, then I think is great.

This is not a show to masturbate to. It is a show to start perhaps pushing those buttons to make you see if you should talk to your partner about talking of your sex life and create a new conversation. How often do you talk to your love one about sex? and how to spice up your life. See. Sex is not only penetration. Could start by watching this show and then trying some of the things you see in the show and then you can add the books you read, the DVD you watched and anything else that might help get you there. That happy place we all want to be.

Well, good luck with your sex life and give the show a try. Something could sparkle down there.

Until next time, have a great sex life.

The Ron Clark Story
(2006)

There are still opportunities to be a super teacher...and the best student.
This is a must see movie. Everyone should see this movie. Very inspiring. TNT will broadcast on August 13 at 8pm. Mathew Perry does a great job of portraying Ron Clark. Although, the real Clark, which I got to meet at the Atlanta film festival is more alive and enthusiastic than the one from the movie. Still, Mathew Perry give a very simpatico character to follow the whole story.

The kids are brilliant. There are a few strong visual moments but well done for a TV movie. Beside, it did happen. It is good to show what is really happening in the real world and the opportunities that all kids have no matter what their backgrounds are.

Every single kids has the same opportunities. All kids have different potential. Just need to encourage him/her to bring it about and use it.

Congrats to Ron Clark for all his work. He has a book call "The essential 55" that can help teachers and soon to be teachers. Also to TNT for bringing good quality and inspiring television content.

I hope you get to watch it and comment on it. Spread the word. Spread the teaching. Get connected with kids. They will thank you.

May the spirits of these kids guide you to a better future and Clark to a better teacher.

Good luck.

Diarios de motocicleta
(2004)

Take the ride...
Hi, I just finished watching the DVD. I was touched and moved,"conmovido", by the movie. I enjoyed very much the Argentinian accent and how they express themselves. So frank, so free, so rich.

I loved taking the ride with them. Excellent cinematography. Beautiful images at the end of the film.

It's no doubt Gael and Rodrigo portrayed excellent personalities of the "Che" Guevara and Alberto Granado. Very "simpatico" characters. You want to explore with them the unknown and the injustice they come across the road.

A friend of mine told me that the director Walter Salles did not reach further on his quest to go deeper as he did with Central Station with the reality of life. But to me, you can understand what is going on in south America. I don't need to go back to the 50's. He can use this movie to reflect what is Latinamerica about.

You can sense it right now. But, some of us might turn the heads and close the eyes. It does not matter, with eyes closed, hears blocked real life is happening right now. You know it. I know it. And that is why we feel compelled by this movie to identify what some parts of Latinamemica faces.

It's a great film. Don't miss it. Rent it. I enjoyed a great film-making.

Cut. Print. That's a rap.

Vidas privadas
(2001)

Look but don't touch....
OOOOOk.

Here we go.

What do I like about this movie? Well, the photography was good. It seems It could have been in black and white to give more power to the images with the type of music Fito Paez selected to make. It was like try too hard and too much of it. That piano Psycho style. I don't know. Too strange. Unless you want to go on that direction. Then go on that direction with the movie too. May be it would have been a darker picture (with high contrast too) for a darker subject matter.

I like Cecilia and Gael. These characters are difficult to identify with unless you are going thru the same thing. I spoke with an friend from Argentina and said that Gael accent was petty good. Remember, Argentinians are picky, so I believed him.

The camera could have moved more and Fito could have play more with the close ups much better (Philadelhia movie style). You know, Jonathan Demme.

It's no doubt that music could have better to get you in tone with the movie.

This story is a little hard to believe. If this has happen before to someone, that person should tell this story.

Fito, it seems you have money. Please use it wisely in movies. There are more fascinating stories where I am sure you can make more money.

Latinamerican films need to make a change but in a uplifting way. And I don't mean happy endings. But stories that most people can identify with and enjoy more at the same time.

Also if I ever do any movie, this a good one to watch what not to do.

Over and Out. Until next time.

Thanks.

War of the Worlds
(2005)

Run, run, run for your life
Yes. Run, run to see it. Are you a Spielberg fan? This is going to be your cup of tea. You are going to find all the elements of Spielberg. His famous dolly shots and main characters staring away from camera. Some funny moments in desperate situations. And of course the world of special effects.

If you saw the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", you will find this movie has the same caliber of production. Perhaps scarier at times. May not be suitable for younger kids. It could be terrified how people die.

Anyhow, people has to die. It is an alien invasion. They are not here to chat.

There was no other director to bring you this movie. According to an interview Spielberg said, "because I still believe in intelligent life out there I made this movie". He was asked the same question about believing in intelligent life at the "Inside the studio" and he answered a strong "yes".

He's been fascinated by this subject for years. So, you are one of those escapist of the movie goer. Well, this is your movie. Get ready to be scared, yell and please don't damage the seats. You'll be holding the edge of it.

Enjoy the run. It will be wild.

Until next time.

Signing off.

Garden State
(2004)

A dream come true...
If I ever want to be a film director, I would make it like this film. If I ever become a writer, I will write it like this movie. A cinematographer, a production assistant, cater, I would let the dog hump me all day if he wants to.

I felt identified by the character of Zach. Not because his mother die. Because my father die a few months ago. Not because he took drugs(prescribed medication)and real drugs. Because I am saturated with my job. I have sleepless nights. I dream in stop motion. Fast motion. Slow motion. This is without drugs.

It is great to see something when you feel the same way. Not because I have found answers to my life. I do not need a movie for that. I sat for the time of the movie wanting to see more.

I wanted to continue in this journey, not to find out what would happen to Zach and Natalie but to find out about what life is all about.

This is the film I go to escape. To see that life is a journey that you can laugh at without getting as hurt in the process.

Zach don't lose it. This is your opportunity to go far, far, far.

If I ever want to be a director, this is how I am going to do it.

Cut, print, that's a rap.

The Bourne Supremacy
(2004)

Grab on...is a bumpy ride
I went to see The Bourne Supremacy yesterday, Sunday July 25 at 5:20pm for $6.50. Theater was packed. I had seat very near the screen. I said to myself - I guess I have to put on my seat belt and go for a ride.

Within a few minutes the search for Bourne began. Amazing editing. Yes, you may say there is a little too much car chase in some places but these sequences were visually impressive.

The constant camera movement give the film a fast pace. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Even when the action slows down, camera continues to move to keep up with the suspense and tension of the film.

Some people don't like this constant movement on close up but there you have N.Y.P.D. BLUE, C.S.I., LAW AND ORDER, WEST WING, and the list goes on. When it comes to film language and how camera is used, well, welcome to film 101. Just like Robert Rodriguez would say "move your camera a lot". Check commentaries of El Mariachi and Spy Kids. You just might learn a few tricks.

I enjoyed the film very much. Even sitting at the front of the screen. This is a good part two. You should give it a try. You have not seen the first one? Rent it and then go see the second part.

Cut, print, that's a rap.

The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan
(2004)

Fake is good...
Fake...let's talk about fake. What is not faked in our lives. Women fake it. And enjoy faking it. So in the world of movies, come to think of it, it is a fake world. A make believe. Pretend. Fake.

In this particular case is brilliant work. A brilliant work of making a fake. I saw a great sum of money into the project. I wish I was working for one these studios or channels. Imagine...to get paid to create make believe movies.

This is Great.

Do you think Indiana Jones can survive in real life what he had to go through? I - DON'T - THINK - SO. The movie would have been 1 minute long...tops.

I liked the show. Or the long commercial as some called it. mockumentary if you will.

I come from a country where people believe and practice this search of the beyond.

Whether is true or not is hard to say. There is a saying in my country, Venezuela, "I do not believe in it, but they do fly"

I enjoyed the whole fake. I really got into it, just as I would have enjoyed a great faked sex. Whatever faked sex means.

I know is hard to please movie people. But somewhere in Hollywood there is a person right now making tons of money writing your next fake. Be ready. Be prepared. Be aware of what is coming to you soon.

By the time you come out of the theater, you will never know what hit you.

Cut, print, that's a rap.

The Terminal
(2004)

Passport please. Business or pleasure?
Now I know why some people don't like this movie.

My best guess is that they were not identified by the character of Victor. Maybe they have never been in this situation ever.

I have been there before. I know how it is. It is really frustrating to try to talk and not be understood. Or you try to explain yourself the best you can and it does not work.

Most people think that immigration is easy. Not it is not. I am a resident now but before I had to ask for a visa. I went to the embassy every time and when you come in to the United States you better state your purpose in USA because it can give you problems if you for any reason you get engaged in illegal conduct or business.

When you come in and talk to the officer is really hard sometimes. Because you don't want to sound stupid or say the wrong thing. You think you don't know where are you going. You are going to see mickey mouse in Orlando. You got your plane ticket which usually they ask. They want to see that you are going back to your home.

Have you ever stuck in a country where you have no money and have no debit credit card. This is an new concept. where you can use your debit visa card. Before you would be stuck and maybe the airlines would help you get back home.

Anyways, I enjoyed it very much. All characters were believable. But remember, this is a movie, certain elements are needed for entertainment purposes. This movie has Spielberg written all over it. Camera movements. Camera position with various characters. Certain jokes. Check when people are running back and forth on the background. This is the mind of Spielberg.

By the way, this is based on a real character. According to the interview with Hanks. The real Victor decided to go back and live inside the terminal again. He did not get used to the outside. This is not a spoiler.

This is a film that takes a look at real airport life in a funny way. Usually we don't see these people. We just go about our business. Not because we don't care, it is just that we need to go where we are going.

Cut, print, that's a rap.

Spider-Man 2
(2004)

It's an open comic book...
Are you a Spider-man fan? You better get up and go now to see the movie. Common go, go, go, go before it goes to DVD.

More Scenes outside. Two hours long. Great special effects. Great one lines. More story about Peter and the beautiful Mary Jane. It was very moving sometimes to change the pace. I laughed a few times. The sound was great too.

It has many scenes to remember.

The message of the movie to me is this:

May Parker says, "I believe there's a hero in all of us. Gives us strength, makes us noble. Even though sometimes, we have to give up the thing we want the most".

I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did. The kid inside of me will always enjoy it and it feels great.

B-Happy
(2003)

Real, moving, charming...
This comment is for those movie people that have not try to watch a foreign film yet. This is a very good film from Gonzalo Justiniano. He brings a story that looks real, with real situation, and real characters. Characters that you have to give them a chance to show you that life is life as is. This might just be happening next door to you and you do not know it.

Although the cinematography looks and feels like we are in a place where the sun rays hit differently, it hits you with a new fresh look at life. The real life we do not want to face sometimes.

This movie has so many characters that each one of them give you a touch of life that makes it rich on the screen.

I was able to enjoy this movie very, very, very much. Give this movie a chance. Give yourself a break into a new perspective in life. Real life is out there and Gonzalo Justiniano was able to put it on a film.

Lorene Prieto(Kathy's mother) gives a powerful performance and Manuela Martelli (Kathy) is the greatest.

Rent this movie. You will not be disappointed. Give real life a chance.

Life is simple sometimes. But you have to live it.

Cut! Print! That's a rap!

Bring your Mate tea...
This is a delightful film. If you wish to get away from Hollywood movies, you should give this movie a try. Each actor brings a wonderful performance. Don Justo gives a warm and "simpatico" delivery. It seems to me that they were not acting. It felt it was really happening at that moment...live. Grab your tea or your "Mate" and get ready to enjoy a "Patagonic" experience that you will treasure for a lifetime.

Zapping
(1999)

Let the movie do the zapping...
Today is March 11, 2002. I watched the movie because I had to promote it. As many Spanish movies that you may like, this one deals with the drama of a family who wants to get back together. Even if you need to use the television. Maria wants his husband back after he met this hot chick who likes hot sex and wants to stay together forever. Maria is ready to do anything to get him back. She even tries an onion to make her cry. Then she takes the tears and pour it over her husband picture. She burns everything and take the ashes and dump it under the sofa of the new girlfriend, Elvira. Ok, maybe it might work if you have faith and have a strong believe that this will work. This idea came from a TV show. A Madam (fortune teller) who reads the tarot, just like they do in the United States. But this one is a live show. Now, Elvira also watched the same trick on the same show at the same time. Who will get him first?... Maybe Elvira has a mysterious past. But hey you will have to watch it to find out. One thing is for sure: If you like Spanish movies in general, Spanish sex scenes(which is different from U.S.), and a taste of Spanish unique accent and great curse words when they are mad. This is your movie. Just let the movie do the zapping for you. Enjoy.

Road Trip
(2000)

Put on your seat belt and hang on...
When you send a tape to your girlfriend having sex with someone else by mistake...funny things are about to happen. So hang on tight because you are about to meet four guys who are going to take you on the ride of your life. Josh, E.L., Rubin and Kyle are going to face with you life in very delightful way. So just sit, relax and jump over the bridge of excitement. Tom Green in this movie is very unique at telling you this fabulous story. Enjoy.

Smallville
(2001)

Clark Kent has come to us...
I was able to watch the premiere of Smallville, the story of Clark Kent as a teenager. It was Great! I remember the first Superman Movie (Christopher Reeve) where I got to see a little bit of the teenage years but never was developed fully. Now it is your opportunity to enjoy the other side of Clark as he struggles with all these powers and meeting some of the people I knew from the comics and the movies. This series could be a hit in Latin America. I just hope it does not get soap-opera(ish) later in the season. I really enjoyed this first episode. Bring it on Clark. Shows us your powers and great entertainment. By the way, Annette O'Toole played Lana Lang in superman III. Enjoy the show...

Secretos compartidos
(1998)

Wednesday is the most dangerous day of the week.
Secretos Compartidos (Shared Secrets) is full of suspense, intrigue, and many hidden secrets to spice up the screen. Brian de Palma's movie "Blow out" meets "Jack The Ripper". The movie is based on the book called " The fisher and the Clown" by Leandro Siciliano, one of the screenwriters. The movie starts right away with the first killing of a woman been followed from the supermarket to her house. The serial killer Vicente Duarte (Victor Laplace- Best actor at the Havana Film Festival)is obsessed with women behavior and he is disturbed by how they dress on a daily basis and show some of their body parts in public. The characters are real, in a real city (Buenos Aires), with real feelings, surrounded by real situations. In Argentina is very normal to show some skin and dress very aggressive. It's part of their life. the killer(the fisher) decides to go hunting for girls on every Wednesday and one day meets another men (the clown)who shares the experiences of how to pick up girls. Obviously, the killer tells his killing stories as if going out on a real date. The pace of the film is good, the special effects are nicely done and the music for the film is excellent. A must see film if you like movies from Argentina and Latin American movies in general. Just don't watch it on a Wednesday, OK.
