Dragonslayer
(1981)

A quirky, enjoyable journey into a magical Dark Age
Sir Ralph Richardson is the fulcrum of this delightful tale of a Medieval time that never was. Peter MacNicol's spontaneous boyishness makes the Sorcerer's Apprentice come alive in another garb. Of course, Alex North's remarkable, controversial score defines and deepens this fairy tale into a noire journey through the dark heart of human superstition driven by simultaneous fear of the unknown and lust for power. The magic here is as much the discovery of love and sensuality as it is a journey into the dragon's layer. Dark hearts are where you find them.

I Married a Monster
(1998)

Satisfying remake of a classic
Sure it's "cheap SciFi", *but* it sticks to the plot of the original "I Married a Monster from Outer Space" (1958) with some interesting CG embellishments. For my money, it's just as good as the original. The feel and look of the 1998 version also are different, perhaps because it was directed by a woman. I found IMM an intriguing remake, and I'd like to own both it and the 1958 version on a DVD, particularly if we could get the principals of both to talk about the differences between the two versions.

Don't Say a Word
(2001)

"Rear Window" for the year 2001 has suspense, sex & humor.
It's not often a movie balances action, suspense, sex, and humor, but "Don't Say a Word" brings it off. Credible performances by the entire cast, but most memorable to me was Famke Janssen's spectrum of emotions, varying from warm sexiness to palpable anguish, then to icy calculation. Could she be the next Julia Roberts? (Can't wait for "XMen 2"!) This movie holds your attention right to the end. Worth purchasing the DVD and Mark Isham's dramatic sound track.
