Summer of Sam
(1999)

BOOGIE NIGHTS MEETS FAILED DIRECTOR
This was one of the most ridiculous and badly directed movies I've seen in a very long time. I've never liked Spike Lee, but thought I'd give this one a try: bad mistake. The movie is supposed to show how the Son of Sam real life murders affected a neighborhood in the summer of 1977; what it really did was center around the most boring characters that I doubt anyone cared for as far as their drug problems, marriage problems, and so on, etc. The scenes that depict the murders are just that, and nothing more; a shooting and then it's back to Saturday Night Fever! What's even more ridiculous is Spike Lee's choice to show up as a reporter in the movie: Spike, trust me, you're no Hitchcock, stay out of the movies, it makes them even worse off. The most silly scene had to be the dog speaking in a goofy voice, which was depicted in a scene before it where it was supposed to have been shot??? Spike, what were you thinking when you made this film? Not thinking at all is my guess. People who think they'll see a crime drama, take my advice and do not waste your time or money on this loser. You're better off watching Jerry Springer in this case! Waste of film, I gave it a 1 out of 10: awful dud.

Arlington Road
(1999)

A 'This could really happen' drama/thriller
This is the kind of movie that not only brings an important problem to light (terrorism) but also makes you wonder how many people are floating around your country, who may not be who they seem to be. Tim Robbins was perfect casting for the family man/terrorist who is a very disturbing character, when you are done watching the movie he's still in your mind. The ending was Brilliant, it leaves so many people guessing up to the actual climax, and you see at the very end how all the pieces of the puzzle come together, to deliver a very scary, very surprising ending. There's action, tense drama, a little bit of everything to blend it into a great movie to watch. It was 2 points away from being a 10 in my opinion, so I gave a solid 8 rating. Be sure to watch this one!

Enemy of the State
(1998)

You want action, you got it.
Gene Hackman is Brilliant in almost everything he does, including Enemy of The State. I'll admit I'm not a big action movie fanatic, but this one won my time to watch it. If you like action films that have to do with a lot of what's going on today and make you think (about your privacy in this case) then this one you should watch. Usually if a movie is action every single minute it seems to take away from the acting, but not in this case. Gene Hackman and Will Smith seem to combine perfectly in this playing off each other. The ending may have been a bit predictable, but not that bad to not watch it. Action/suspense fans should get their hands on this one. I rated it a 7 out of 10.

Killing Zoe
(1993)

Good acting but no thrills
I thought the acting in this movie was very good, but it had a very predictable ending, and was far from a thriller. It did however, produce a very good portrayal of some great debauchery in Paris; these drug-induced scenes were well directed and the use of subtitles in a mostly English speaking movie was different in a good way. I'd say to watch this movie for the acting and nothing more. A bit overdone on the violent end also, so stray from this if you have a sickness for guns in movies. I rated it a 4.

Kafka
(1991)

Great camera work, but unable to bring Kafka's work into your head.
I gave this a solid 8 out of 10 for the director's use of the camera and choice to cut to color for the climax of the film. The use of black and white and claustrophobic settings (plus the ongoing music score) seemed a little too much like the masterpiece in which Orson Welles directed with Anthony Perkins as the infamous Mr. K, the film I'm speaking of being The Trial, which is the movie any Kafka fan should view to come close to what Kafka's books and stories represent. Still this movie was not a waste of time: a good thriller with a little strangeness here and there, perfect for a boring Sunday night. 8 out of 10.

Le procès
(1962)

Superb!
A superb film by one of the greatest director/actors of our time. Orson Welles brings Kafka to film like no one else may ever be able to. Anthony Perkins is excellent in his role, adding the fact that he looks like Kafka in a very weird way. The use of Albinoni's Adagio (music score throughout film) through the scenes only adds to the melancholy masterpiece. You will never be able to forget that screaming, insane laugh that Perkins lets out at the very end for the rest of your life! I gave this a solid 10 out of 10. Rent it and watch it now Kafka fans.

Sophie's Choice
(1982)

Powerful beyond belief.
I gave this movie a very solid 10. Streep's performance is perfection at its best, there is not one flaw made by her in the entire movie. Bringing together scenes of both romance, passion for life, misery, and joy, she allows this movie to get a hold of you and not let go until the end, as all great films should. Other performances are equally great, but it is Streep as the 'very believable' Sophie that will take you by storm. Without a doubt one of the best films of the 80's. Watch it!

Basquiat
(1996)

No Hollywood glamour, but an intense portrait of an artist and his life.
This film was very good I thought, for many reasons: there was no 'let us make this film so flashy' that you often see Hollywood doing, especially in portraying real life figures, but very good intense acting, really bringing Basquiat's inner-conflicts to the screen. It takes a while to realize that his manner is not slow or stupid, but a kind of quiet intelligence. There is also the long list of great actors appearing throughout the film, even if in brief moments: William Dafoe, Dennis Hopper, David Bowie (great as Warhol), Gary Oldman, Courtney Love (surprisingly convincing in a small part as a happy street gal). If you like movies that get right to it, then rent Basquiat tonight, I gave it a solid 9 out of 10, check it out.

Camille Claudel
(1988)

A brilliant film for the intellectual romantic.
A very mind-blowing glimpse into the lives of two sculptors, mad with love and the insanity that often plagues people of artistic genius. Superb acting that allows you to forget you are watching a film, drowning you in the art, love, and madness of Rodin and Camille Claudel. A definite must for the intellectual film fanatic (movies that feed your mind) or fan of foreign film. I'd rate this a solid 8 stars out of ten. A breathtaking piece of film. Rent it tonight!
