I Am a Sex Addict
(2005)

Nice Try.......
I am a sex addict follows the life of our director/ star as he tries to overcome his sex addiction. It is at times funny, creepy, and even disgusting.

The film is very ambitious but it starts to fail pretty rapidly. One problem is the confusing narration of Caveh himself. In the beginning of the movie he begins to go off track explaining problems with locations, bitchy actresses, porn stars, etc. Things that really should not be explained are, its like being at a party with someone trying to tell you a 5 minute story that winds up being 20 minutes of a confusing tangent.

Another thing is Caveh's own ego, instead of using a actor to play his younger self, Caveh insists on being the own star of his film. Something that he himself cant even pull off, there are times where it clearly reminds us of armature hour, with him not being able to keep a clear face in certain scenes.

The point winds up getting lost in the shuffle as his recovery is never clearly explained. We are told he went to a sex addicts meeting but we never go deeper than a 4 minute scene most of which is with Caveh's narration. We are just told he "got better". HOW?! After 2 hours of this story you end it with "I just got better"? This made me want to slam my head against the wall.

I Am A Sex Addict is entertaining at times (like watching a car wreck) but it tends to clearly get lost and we as an audience are the ones who suffer for it.

Home Room
(2002)

Amazing
While i was the video store i was browsing through the one dollar rentals and came upon this little gem. I don't know what it was about it but i just had a gut instic about it and wow was i ever right.

The story centers around two girls who have just survived a school shooting. One of the girls is Alicia a teenage reble who is the only witness for the full attack and another is Deanna another survivor who survived a bullet to the head by some miracle. Thrown together by fate, they slowly begin a painful and beautiful display of healing and moving on.

I just hate it when amazing movies fall through the cracks. Because wow what a performance by Busy Phillips and Erkia Christensen not to mention the rest of the cast! My only complaint is that the DVD was sorely lacking in special features. Oh and some of the jump cuts in the movie were kind of jarring. But all in all a excellent movie.

The Skulls III
(2004)

Not bad...
If i were you, i would skip Skulls 2 and go directly to this nice little gem. Clare Kramer actually did a decent job at this film, as well as the other cast. Normally i don't expect much from direct to video sequels of popular teen movies but this one actually surpassed the original in my opinion. Providing more interesting twists and turns than the original ever did. Not to mention the carbon copy sequel which really sucked. This one really held my interest and kept me guessing at an outcome.

Kramer stars as Taylor a bright and head strong young woman who is still haunted by her brothers suicide and her fathers growing distance. She decides that she will take up the mantel her brother failed to do with becoming a skull. But as the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for. As Taylor suddenly begins to spiral out of control down a path of betrayal, jealousy and murder.

Unlike Skulls 2, this third actually spends time detailing the grueling process of becoming a skull, Skulls 2 skipped all that and just repeated the same scenes from the original, the only thing skulls 2 had differently was a breasts. And sadly Skulls 3 didn't but I'm not complaining the story was so good, i quickly forgot my horn dog ways. Skulls 3 has everything you would want in a good Friday night movie...except breasts but i think we can overlook that cant we?

Not a bad way to waste a couple of bucks on a weeknight.

King's Ransom
(2005)

Needs work
I had heard some pretty horrible things about this movie but i love Anthony Anderson so i decided to give it a shot. Kings Rasom is a comedy about a rich man named Malcom King (Anthony Anderson) who decides to get a divorce to avoid giving his wife a divorce settlement. I never knew how being kidnapped would help achieve this but were just led to believe that somehow this will work. He enlists his girlfriends (Regina Hall) aid to help him who has the IQ of a raising and calls her creepy convict of a brother to help her (played by the brilliant Charlie Murphy).

Unfortunately 2 more sets of people get the same idea of kidnapping him, at the same time what are the odds on that? You have the disgruntled employee who was passed up for a vice president position and you have a lovable looser who is stepped on by Malcolm king.

Kings Ransom does have some funny moments and interesting turns. But allot of things fall flat. Were supposed to believe that a man who built a company would make his bimbo girlfriend vice president? So many coincidences? The feds don't get involved when a millionaire gets kidnapped? My experience with the film was bipolar. At the begging i was hating it, then i started liking it, hated it, loved it, and in the end disappointed. Its as if the script self destructed being pulled in so many directions at once it just gave out. The ending was tagged on, character disappeared, had no purpose or just got lost in the shuffle.

Quite frankly if this was rewritten I think it actually could have been up there with kidnapping classics like "Ruthless People" but instead its just one more movie for the bargain bin.

Los debutantes
(2003)

Pretty good
I was pretty surprised with this flick. Even though their budjet was obviously lacking still you have to be impressed that this movie took 7 years to make and still turned out good. The acting was pretty impressive and the story really captivated me. My only complaint would be that the ending really was a little too abrupt for my taste. But hey if your audience is left wanting more then this movie has succeeded.

I would really recommend anyone in Hollywood to look up Antonella Ríos who is an excellent Spanish talent (something hard to find now days with all the bad novela over acting). Antonella Ríos truly is a star on the rise.

Silk Stalkings
(1991)

Just Good Bad TV
I remember staying up and watching this show mostly due to the almost sofcore stories and air brushed cast but as i grew older i started watching the show more for the unnecessary comedy than anything else.

Just noticing the typical casting done for the extras and supporting cast, every cop in that station was a model or made of plastic. Every female cop wore more make up than a porn star and their police procedure were just silly. The acting wasn't exactly bad persay just that the cast didn't have much to work with or just became compliant to getting a pay check.

Watch it for fluff and turn your brain off, and you'll get some pleasure from watching this bad TV.

Santa Cristal
(2001)

Funny and Shocking.......
I was lucky enough to actually be able to see this small independent film. Santa Cristal is about a fictional island that suffers a crisis when an actor turned new age guru announces that the world will end in a short period of time. This creates a fever pitch of panic in the island when another Christian religious leader speaks out against this. In this middle of this is a reporter trying desperately to speak rationally, a prostitute trying to take care of her autistic sister, a man betrayed by the woman he loves, and even a homeless man dressed as bunny (yeah I'm serious).

Santa Cristal is a social commentary on the society of Puerto Rico (when local radio stations hold a rave at the end of the world), Religion (the opening scene is the most shocking thing i have scene in the cinema) and big business (the funniest part is when an older man is trying to unsuscribe to a horrible telephone plan that his wife was tricked into subscribing to). It doesn't hold back or sugar coat anything.

Its shocking, Its hysterical, Its controversial and hopefully more people will see it because it is something the local Puertorican cinema has never seen before.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
(2004)

This Was a Good Movie......
I know allot of people are slamming this film because its pretty much a stonners comedy and it is made by the same guy who made the cult "Dude Wheres My Car" (A film i still don't understand why its so popular) I have to disagree. This film touches on some nice points. It touches on stereotypes and racism and makes fun of of the absurdity of it. And it also is kinda heartwarming.

The Dougie Howser jokes really got me laughing pretty hard and the situations these two guys got in were pretty freaking hilarious. Even though it wasn't exactly a box office hit i can see this movie being a cult classic probably in the same footsteps of Cheech and Chong. And i personally would like to see a sequel.

Comic Book: The Movie
(2004)

My two cents
I really wanted to enjoy this movie (being a comic book geek and all) but it was just too long and you can see that 90% of it was improve and the thing with improve is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. So the movie is mostly the actors throwing jokes at a wall and seeing what sticks and thats very sad because these guys are really funny. The best voice's in show business today and its a shame that Hammill could not channel that.

I admire Hammill, i mean he really knew his comic book history here. But i think like most comic fans he got hung up on one tinny thing and just grinded it to dust. Loosing the character from the journey of comic to movie is great but it doesn't hold a movie together.

It is admirable that they didn't make fun of the fans. In movies based on the comic book culter people tend to take the easy way and just point at the fans and laugh at how they are so "weird". Its very rare in this movie that this happens, Its more like the "normal" people are the weird ones and thats a breath of fresh air.

Most of the actors did a great job, The camera guy was really stealing the show but i think that Hammill should have railed him in more because too much of a good thing is not good. Billy as always did a great job but seemed to loose focus most of the time. Hammill of course was very good and probably the best of the bunch but i think he didn't take a step back and looked at the film in an objective point of view.

The cool thing about this movie guys is that if you buy the DVD you wont be wasting your money. Hammill does allot of extensive interviews about the history of comics and the subculture. Actually I'm quite sad that he cut it out of the movie when other things should have been cut instead. Hugh Heffeners interview about his history with comics is fascinating! Bruce Campbell comes off very funny in the extended interview, Some deleted scenes were very good, like the comic guy who almost seemed despondent after printing up his comic and going all the way to sandiego, spending money he really thought that he would make back and just to be shunned really makes you choke up a little. But probably the funniest and best special feature is the panel they hosted about doing voice work in animation, its worth the price of the DVD alone.

So all in all, i think that the movie deserves a 6/10

Justice League of America
(1997)

Why couldnt they just follow the comics....
This series was based on the Keith Griffen run of the JLA comics which was quite funny and interesting. Now that was something i would have loved to have seen on TV. Unfortunatly like every failed comic book adaptaion hollywood decided to deviate from the source material. Guy Gardner was turned into a responsible workaholic, Barry Allen was dumb and couldnt hold a job, The Atom was a geek with really horrible hair, Fire was a strugeling actress, and Martin Manhunter......bwahahahahaha!!!

Some of the most ridiculous aspects of the pilot was that they all lived in a house (and wackiness insues), Fire had a secret identity but yet wore NO MASK!!!, Atom uses his power in the most usless ways, The stalker that Fire had was just a retarted subplot.

I think if they would have followed the original comics they could have had a hit......and redo the costumes.

Fujin Ryouiki Eretzvaju
(1999)

Good game
Very cool little game, i wonder if there is an anime that its based on since it does have animation. Anybody know? anyway this game is pretty cool since you play all types of anime characters from different genres. Some of the story is a little hard to follow (like the motive of the villian) but its still pretty cool since the game has different angles like an anime movie unlike anything i have ever seen, its also pretty funny since each characters storyline is narrated by the character like it has its own tv show. The endings are in animation with no sound so that can be a little anoying but i think this game can tottaly liven thingd up with a group of friends. totally recomend it.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
(1996)

Still moves me.....
Really forget the movie, sure it deviates from the source material. Its not as tragic but its a DISNEY MOVIE folks get over it. And really for a Disney movie its probably one of the most darkest ones. The villian is probably the most unique one in Disney history, touching on adult themes like lust. But really the best part of this movie is the music, they really went all out, i actually own the soundtrack and listening to it still moves me to this day. Recomend this movie above all other disney films. I never have seen the sequel because i dont want it to spoil my fond memories of the original but really im surprised that its probably the most overlooked of all the disney classics. Wonderfull preformances and great music what more can you ask for?

12 horas
(2001)

Just sad........
Its just sad how this comes out of Puertorican cinema. Its not that this is the best the film comunity can produce but this is what gets funding. Allot of great films in Puerto Rico never see the light of day due to lack of funds and lack of exposure (its incredebly hard to find movie theathers that will play them since there are only two movie theather chains on the island Carribean Cinemas and Cinevista who are only now showing lee way in letting independent films in their theathers). Not only do film makers have a hard time finding funding but even if they do they have to conform to the demands of the producers who usually come from radio station owners, tv chains or goverment funds so this usually means hirring bad actors, stupid rewrites, ect. (for example how in the middle of the film the film makers stick in the safe sex ad or the convinient name dropping of business, the anti drug ads i could go on and on)

Another factor is that many of the "good" actors in Puerto Rico are used to theather but have problems doing the crossover to television or cinema and ad to that inexperienced directors and well you have a disaster on your hands.

There is some good in this film, great camera work, some good acting (not consistant though) and there are some funny moments (although once again few) Marcos Betancourt and Michelle Deliz are the best this film has to offer.

But there is a TON of bad in the film which is not surprising over acting is probably the worst this film has to offer. Wanda Rovira is given far to many lines, Charlie Massó is given far to much time in this film and well the rest of the cast just flounders (especially the kids). Probably the best example is how in one moment we can be moved by one actors preformance (Marcos Betancour) and then have it complete thrown in the garbage by another (Yadira Nazario) The story of this film is predictable and unorigal. The screen writer gets so desperate he tries to shock us five minutes before the films ends as if he wants to cover all his bases.

The sad thing is not that this is the best Puerto Rico has to offer because its not, its that this is whats allowed out of Puerto Rico when better films never see the light of day.

Washington Heights
(2002)

Good even with its flaws....
I really liked this film mostly because i can relate with the main character, being latino and his situation with his art. Heights is a good film but it suffers from some mayor flaws. The simple fact is that the audience is cut off to the emotional climax. The reason? Bad editing? perhaps. Even though we get some climax with the father and son character, the relationship of the two lovers never comes to fruit actually their problems are never fully explained. This left me at least confused by the death of their relationship. Lack of resolution seems to be the main flaw of this movie, the conflict between the best friend and his father was never resolved. I know its hard to put all of this in the film since the film makers wanted to leave enough room about the main character and his father but perhaps these other situations should not have been brought up since it only leads away from the core of this movie. In the end Washington Heights is a good film and i would recomend it and im sorry to see that it was overlooked by some critics.

Mi día de suerte
(1998)

Pretty good...
Most movies from Puerto Rico are just plain bad. Overacting, horribly dirrecting. Only a handfull of movies made in PR are actually any good, La guagua aeria is a good example of fine PR cinema. Mi dia de Suerte is another. It keeps the over acting to a minimum. And most of the actors actually know what their doing. The ending could have used a little bit of work but it all rounds out to be a very funny movie.

G-Men from Hell
(2000)

Oh the Humanity........
I usually like B movies and i really love movies based on comic books. So why did this not fly with me? Well unlike allot of b-movies it wasnt funny bad but just bad. For starters the sets were horrible you could tell they had little money to go on, i was under the impression that the movie was set around the 50's but yet im seing ripped posters for the backstreet boys in an alley. Not to mention all the villians were horrible. I think the breaking point came when we see a man in a very bad superhero outfit jumping rooftop to rooftop only to jump on a ledge and be held steady by the hand of a crew member, there it was plain as day not even a shred of dignity to try to hide it. Even Vanesa Angel and Kari Wuhrer couldnt shine in this mega flop. If you enjoy movies like Toxic Avenger only dumber (as if that was possible) then you will love G-men from Hell other wise please stay away and save your sanity.

Autumn in New York
(2000)

21??
One of the things i really couldnt get around was casting Wynona Rider as a 21 year old? The rest of the movie uterly predicatble. Ok acting, beautiful scenery, but all in just an ok movie. Not great just okay. Frankly if it wasnt for the obvious millions they spent it could have been done far cheaper and direct to video.

Stolen Summer
(2002)

Ok but far from great........
The problem with this film is that it has a weak opening, thats what truely killed this movie. I fails to hook you, quite frankly the only reason i watched this movie till the end was to begin the episodes of project greenlight.

Its only in the middle of the movie where (if you have gotten that far) it finaly hooks you in.

The acting quite frankly is the only thing that shines from this movie. I wont rehash what many other posters have already said. Ill finish up by saying that if the director would have had more confidance and perhaps been more openminded in revisions maybe this would have been a great movie instead of just ok.

Comic Book Villains
(2002)

Wasted Potential.....
I really wanted to like this movie for its premise but unfortunatly it soon failed from the get go. The problem being is that its never clear what the message is? Dont be an obssesive collector? or dont spend your time reading comics? perhaps its both. The comedy here completely fails, but at the same time you start to wonder if the comedy is supposed to be funny or is it some critic at comedy in mainstream movies today? The acting is this movie goes from good to soon melodramatic. The problem being there are virtually no supporting characters to give depth to the players. All in all this movie failed even with some glimmer of hope this movie could not be saved

save your money folks and go read a comic instead

The Sweetest Thing
(2002)

No exactly as Sweet as we thought
The Sweetest Thing is a movie of moments. Thats pretty much how i can sum up this movie. Even though it started out very good it kind of lost its way along the way only to return to a nice cozey ending. The movie is funny but frankly the best jokes were giving by the suporting cast not the lead actress. Cameron Diaz's comedy starts out funny but only gets anoying after a while. The best jokes of the movie are done by Selma Blair, who provides the best laugh out loud moments of the movie. Mostly all the jokes are sexual never straying from the conventional thoughts of sex sells. One thing i found anoying from the film is the constant need to say that men are just morons or dense. But that seems to be the way we have to write a movie that is supposed to be gearded toward women but with just enough sex appeal to keep the men in the theather.

Faust: Love of the Damned
(2000)

David Quinn should be shot........
My god people avoid this movie like the plague. Its a complete waste of time and its not even worth the 3 bucks I payed at my local video store. David Quinn do us all a favor and never write another screenplay again, This drivel could compete with Ed Woods talent. Corny lines, meaninless plot, i could go on and on. The saddest part of this movie is that once more we have another bad film on the shelves giving the comic book artform a bad name. Please avoid this film like the plague. Save yourselves before its too late!

Hail Caesar
(1994)

ick
Man i just saw this movie and all i can say is what a waste. The script in this movie is horrible. Which is a shame because so many great actors are in this movie (even Samuel Jackson!) But the story goes no where and the jokes go from being cute and funny, to annoying and iratating. Avoid this movie like the plague.

Posse
(1993)

Needs so much work.....
So a great concept, such great actors, and what do we get nada, zip, zippo, caput, no more, out the door, so long, good bye, mierda. This film has its good points but the script just did not go anywhere. Alot of the characters just went back and forth in their personalities, others just never really made a difference. Some talked like they were time travelers from the future (hint, hint Tone Loc). Others just wouldnt shut up (Weezie). One thing i just couldnt wrap my mind around was this if in the future the old man is holding a picture of the cast. How could that be possible if most of them died before they could all meet? Its like one of those time paradoxes that gives you a head ache. Not to mention the ending was a bit melodramatic to say the least. All in all i give Posse a "A" for effort but "F" on delivery.

Random Hearts
(1999)

nice try but.........
You have to admit this movie could have been good, it had a very nice plot and premise but, like the plane in the movie took a nose dive after take off. First off i dont think the screen writers wrote the press as smart. They seem to not be able to write a story unless its dropped in their lap. In other words the press are only used when convenient for the story. Our actors really tried to do a good job, but the script was just bad. The movie dragged on and on from the needless subplots to the old 80's detective saxaphone music it was all just needless and boring. The only thing i found interesting in this movie was the chemistry between mr.ford and his leading lady, but sometimes the lines they spoke just didnt seem believable. Another subplot i found interesting was the crooked cop. All in all nice try but not worth the money i rented it for its a 1.00 dollar movie rack for the forsiable future.

Late Last Night
(1999)

This one great movie............
I have to say that when i first saw the movie on a run down video store i really wasent going to rent it, the cover in particular is a obvious ripp off to swingers, boy am i glad i took a chance.

Steven Webber is incredeble in this movie playing the "best friend" of Emilio Estevez who plays the straight man to such a witty character. Like the other posters, we might never know if Jeff (Webber) is real. Who knows? and Who cares?!

This movie is filled with a perfect balance of comedy and realism. A great preformance and a great script. A must buy for sure.
