From warner brothers. Some huge names as leads. Flynn, dehavilland, massey, reagan. And a giant of a director ..michael curtiz! He had already been nominated for a bunch of films, but it would be a couple more years before he won for casablanca. In this tale, just before the civil war, jeb stuart and other west pointers are assigned to the very dangerous fort leavenworth, as punishment for fighting. Another man is dishonorably discharged for distributing subversive materials. It's okay! I think we've all seen so many westerns by now, that there wasn't really much new here; i know, it's a historical piece. It teeters back and forth between a serious drama and a comedy. A dra-mody. Combined with a love story. Script is good. Maybe they are trying to cover too much history at once? Picture quality is a bit iffy on the copy on roku. Apparently warner didn't renew the copyright, so now anyone can make a copy, of a copy, of a copy. Keep an eye out for alan hale, as tex. One can't make a black and white film without him!
Susan sarandon, who started out in the soap operas and was janet in "rocky horror"! When someone gets moidid in a small town, the whole neighborhood is talking about it. Apparently the victim was quite the ladies man, and was always on the make. So housewife and mom judith decides to try to figure out who-dunnit. But now she's a suspect herself! It's okay. Major over-acting by julia and herrmann. A bit slow in the middle. Some familiar faces... joe montegna, judith ivey, anne desalvo, ed herrmann, raul julia. Story based on the novel by susan isaacs. She also wrote "hello again", about the death of a spouse. And that also starred judith ivey, and it also had director frank perry! Perry was nominated for "david and lisa"... has anyone ever heard of that one? He also directed mommied dearest. Raul julia died young at 54.
Ian carmichael, belinda lee. A family of petty thieves is always pulling jobs at the train station. One day, willie grabs a suitcase full of money! But there's a problem. And it might keep them from spending the money. The gag is that the whole family is into crime. And willie has taken the money from a priest. And starts showing off for the girl in the pub. Can they fix all this and retire early? Some funny bits when they go to the races. It's pretty good. Kind of goes off the rails near the end, but it's all in good fun. Sometimes some weird chemistry between the actors. Jill ireland is in here as doreen. Ireland died young at 54. Directed by john carstairs, for rank films. Currently showing on classic comedies.
