Cold Mountain
(2003)

melodrama
I think they sould forbid movies to be AND superficial/predictable AND have a sad ending. Moreover: leaves you hollow and sad. The english patient could afford to be sad, not this one. Maybe for people who mistake sadness for substance. Perfect people in a perfect love smothered by the evil of men. Argggggggggg! The rest of this comment can be seen as trying to get to the necessary 10 lines. Seems you cannot have an opinion in less then 10 lines. If I would have liked the movie better I would have gone into the details. Pfff still not there. It feels like homework now. Guess this will be my last comment.

Mulholland Dr.
(2001)

as surrealistic, alienating and pointless as a dream
I have seen television and cinema since i could walk and since I bore easily i have come to loath standard Hollywood productions. Sometimes I even think I hate the very concept of a man-made story and prefer documentary's about reality. Another alternative to every day t.v.-show basics is the abstract work of David Lynch. I love watching a David Lynch movie perhaps even just for being so different. There is definitely a lot of talent and skill involved with David Lynch to make his movies the experience they are. But what I miss, since twin peaks / blue velvet is depth and coherence. It's almost become like playing out the abstract thing. I liked watching Lost Highway too, but on hindsight there's not much left of the affection I still feel for twin peaks. I have just seen this movie and can't be sure, but it seems like Mulholland Dr. is going that way too. People are going on about this being the sort of film to see more times. But since you're not supposed to understand any of it anyway and you already know it isn't going anywhere: why? I still give it an 8 for keeping me totally committed to a screen for 145 minutes, unlike dozens of other movies.

The Insider
(1999)

entertainment and substance
I think you can judge this film on different levels. As entertainment we get an involving story attractively visualized. The characters are interesting and well portrayed. The climactic stroy build-up makes it a satisfying viewing experience. Enhancing this entertainment value is the substance of the movie consisting of the fact that it's based on reality and the fact that it makes you think about the capitalistic society and your life in it. The enhancement is mutual because the involvement caused by the high entertainment value of the movie lets you be maximally immersed in the awareness of the power of money : choices in your life, neglect of public welfare, objectivity of journalists etc. Personally I suspect anyone disliking this movie through this medium of being connected with the tobacco industry. But then I just saw the movie :-)

X-Men
(2000)

boring
The struggle of good vs. evil with a lot of special effects. If this was a children's movie I wouldn't have commented on it but everyone is acting so seriously in this movie again I am afraid it is meant for ages 14 and above too, like the matrix. I completely and utterly disliked every boring little scene from beginning to end. No fun. No substance. No originality. There should be a separate IMDB rating for American and European users so I won't get lured into crap like this by high ratings.

The Matrix
(1999)

full off nothing
I can almost feel these highly capable filmmakers think : what a marvellous concept to make a film from. Virtual existence. But where does that leave me as viewer. Should I marvell at the special effects and the overall visual aspects of the movie? Should I see it as unpretentious entertainment (like wonderfull 'the Mummy')? No, because everyone is talking ssso ssserious all the time. And all sort of life philosophy stuff is thrown to my head. Should I see it as a timeless peace of art (like say a 'Kubrick')? Hahaha. Well it's a pity the life philosophy bits don't go beyond puberty stage then. So i'm left with nothing but marvellous visuals with a dirty tang and thus a mediocre viewing experience.

The Mummy
(1999)

entertainment in the raiders of the lost ark tradition
I cannot believe people say this film is predictable. Of course it is, just like 99,9% of every movie coming from the American film industry. This film does not take itself serious so I have no problem judging it purely from an entertainment point of view (unlike f.e. the horrible counter example the matrix). I find lots to enjoy from this movie like the (appropriate) effects and the humor.

La vita è bella
(1997)

clap-trap
I was not bothered by the strange contradiction between comedy and genocide (try to be open minded), but i was bothered by the constant clap-trap (don't know if it is good english, but what i mean is i get the feeling the maker wants me to be moved constantly and i don't like to be manipulated) Grows to show hoe silly the movie database top 250 is. A Fellini film is worth 10000 of these.

Ronin
(1998)

supposed to be a quality movie
It takes more than just taking away some Hollywood glamour to make an action movie with class. This film reminded me how good The French connection was and old french films by Jean Pierre Melville.

Oh, by the way, if you drive against dense traffic you run into car's driving side by side which you crash into within 15 seconds. Let alone 15 minutes with two cars. The James Bond action scene with the tank in Moscow was about as plausible as this one.

Demolition Man
(1993)

yawn! (gaap)
Pseudo substance (Brave New World), action scenes, action scenes, action scenes. Am I the only one getting bored of all this action, the boom boom fireworks and then the kissing in the end. A film like this makes you realise how good Robocop is! Robocop analogy's: -Good police guy and bad higher authority figure using criminal for own purpose -Near future setting, society development critisism -Brutal criminals, brutal violence differences: -Robocop is exciting, this film is just about making money.

WARNING: RATED "ADOL" (8-14 year olds only)

Dangerous Liaisons
(1988)

The anatomy of love and lust.
1. I hate romantic films 2. This is one of the most romantic films I ever saw 3. This is one of my favourite films All very puzzling.

Real life nastiness: lust; manipulating, betraying and using people. The very lowlife's we are (compared to our pompous ideals), set in a fairytale-like costumated environment. Very bizarre. But still the film gives hope and a lesson. Not in a moralistic way, but in a way life itself can teach you too. The lesson is that nastiness might come back at you in the end. The hope lies in the fact that a story that's so ruthlessly conscious of our human 'properties' still comes up with the concept of some sort of true love. I believe in nothing. I don't believe in true love, but maybe just the first hour after seeing this film....
