Blood of the Beast
(2003)

Boring!
SPOILERS AHEAD! I bought this movie cheap and that should have clued me in right there about its quality. I thought that it would be a good little zombie/cannibal movie. How wrong I was. First of all, if you're going to make a zombie movie there must be gore and scenes of ACTION in it. Every time there was an attack there was either a fast forward series of images, a slow motion/extremely shaky camera move or the scene was cut altogether with less characters in the next scene. The only graphic attack came at the end and would have been more effective at regular speed. Second of all, if there was a war try to get footage that looks more modern. Apparently this next big war that will render almost all men impotent will look a lot like World War II. It would have been better to just use expository dialogue from a teacher or something, not old grainy WWII footage with expository title cards explaining the situation. If I wanted to read about what happened, I would read the back of the DVD again. Finally, let's keep the ART to a minimum in a zombie movie. The only cool scene was at the beginning when a freshly painted picture becomes WWII footage. A nice effect, too bad it was the only cool one. Also in a strange artistic move there is no spoken dialogue in the end of the film. The last several minutes play out like a silent film, complete with title cards for what was just mouthed by the characters. Also the night-vision "Blair Witch" seemed kind of hacky. Trust me, only rent this one if you dare. But if you want a better low budget zombie movie seek out Brian Clement's MEAT MARKET and MEAT MARKET 2 instead.

Darkness
(1993)

Awesome independent horror!
I bought this movie recently and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was way better than I thought it would be. With the budget that the filmmakers had I didn't expect "From Dusk Till Dawn," but this movie is awesome all the same. There was even a shot of Liven (the vampire king) coming out of the ground that would later be used in "John Carpenter's Vampires."

This film shows vampirism among normal people and not wealthy and elegant aristocrats. The vampires in this film don't just suck blood from people's necks, they revel in it. There is a lot of cool gore in this film, too, which is amazing considering how low the budget was. The scene where a group of vampires start to disintegrate on a lonely road when the sun comes up in the middle of chasing the heroes of the film is the most memorable. Altogether this is an awesome film!

Screamtime
(1983)

Creepy...
"Screamtime" is one of those anthology films, like "Creepshow," and while it's not as good as the George A. Romero classic, it's effective.

The plot is about two guys who steal three videos from a video store. They go back to one of their girlfriend's apartment to watch them.

The first video is about a "Punch and Judy" puppeteer whose family wants him to get out of the puppeteering business since it doesn't make much money for the family. Then his stepson burns down his puppet show stage and soon after is murdered on the beach, seemingly by the Mr. Punch puppet. Then later at his house his wife is also murdered. Has Mr. Punch come to life, or is someone else to blame?

The second video is about a married couple moving into a new house. The wife begins to see grisly visions of a murder that seems to have been committed there. But is the house really haunted?

The third video is about a guy who competes in dirtbike races, but needs some money. So he gets a job working odd jobs at the house of two elderly women. They tell him about the fairies that guard the house and the garden gnomes that work for them. He dismisses what they say, but takes an interest in the money, gold, jewels, and other valuables around the house. So he gets two of his friends to help him rob the place that night. But the fairies and garden gnomes really are alive and attack the intruders.

Finally, the video tape thieves and one of their girlfriends get attacked by elements of the three videos they stole.

If you give this low budget movie a chance you may be pleasantly surprised by it. The three films were shot in England with the connecting device about the video tape thieves shot in New York City. The puppets in the first video are creepy looking. The ending of the second video will shock you. The third movie gets a little spooky in the dark house; tiny floating lights fly by the camera unseen by the burglars, a room is suddenly full of garden gnomes, etc. This movie is perfect for horror movie connoisseur.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut
(1999)

Hilarious!
I saw this film twice and it is the funniest movie I have seen this year. I think it's better than Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. The bad language isn't beeped out like on the TV series. It goes too far sometimes with its humor, but it's still funny stuff.

The Last House on the Left
(1972)

Shocking and Disturbing
This is the most disturbing movie that I have ever seen in my life. Most of the time in our lives we are detached from the atrocities that other people do and we say, "That's terrible." Then we forget about it until the next bad thing happens. But this film shows us the magnitude of atrocity that people can commit against each other. Krug and his sick cohorts show us just how evil and depraved some people can be. This film is extremely disturbing with shocking and intense scenes of rape, torture, abuse, and murder. You'll need a strong stomach to watch this film.
