Kid Notorious
(2003)

Funniest Thing on TV
I agree, Kid Notorious is so good I wonder if it will catch on. I'm recording as much as I can before they yank it like they did Dr. Katz. The first one I saw was with Jacques Chirac and it just railed on the French, talk about timely! I laughed so hard and was hooked. Only the coolest show would have Chirac, Rumsfeld, Kim Jung Il and Slash in it. As for the racial stereotype, lighten up, Tully Mae is one of the best characters. Besides, everyone is stereotyped just as they are on the Simpsons and South Park. "Ain't it Great! You bet your ass it is!"

Nixon
(1995)

Typical Stone Paranoia
It's a marginal movie. Hopkins and Woods are good, but it suffers from being too long, too negative, and too Stone-ish. What I want to know is, where are the Oliver Stones of other countries exposing their leaders?

France needs a good Oliver Stone exposing their centuries of corruption, death, and perfidy. Are we the only country with FREE SPEECH?

Fidel
(2002)

Pretty Decent for TV
This was as good as some of the more minor Cuban movies that are based in historical fact. However, the best movie is 'Before Night Falls' which is more professionally done, very compelling, and completely unvarnished on how brutal the dictatorship is. 'Fidel' did show the emptiness and lies of communism/socialism or as they call it, 'the revolution'. Soon there were shortages, rationing, a deteriorating standard of living, and of course, no freedom or rights for anyone except the ruling class; Fidel and his henchmen. Oh, it also demonstrates how utterly ignorant of basic economics Fidel is and how irrational and erratic he is.

Plata quemada
(2000)

Wow, passion, homoerotica, suspense, and a fitting ending.
I loved the whole experience; the feel, the mood, the music, the story, and the beautiful protagonists.

I felt for the characters; their passion, problems, and failings.

Besides, I like a true story told very well, with beautiful actors. It was very, very well done.

C'est arrivé près de chez vous
(1992)

Truly reprehensible and as the French would say, 'banal and vulgar'!
And the Francophiles are always so concerned about violence. This movie is truly tasteless. It's supposed to be funny, but graphic scenes of gratuitous violence, rape, and even child killing are not funny, just repulsive.

I suppose they thought they were really being clever and making a statement, but the statement is completely missing other than; when you have no talent and a lack of competition in such a small Francophile world anything will sell, even this trash. I'll bet they were even subsidized to make this trash.

Truly reprehensible.

Love Actually
(2003)

Typical British movie trying to be hip
I like British movies, don't get me wrong, but this movie tried way too hard, was trying to be too hip, too schmaltzy, too sentimental, and the anti-American Leftist swipe didn't help at all.

This doesn't merit anyone's time or money.

Mùa hè chieu thang dung
(2000)

Gorgeous, but some parts are tedious
I like Won Kar Wai movies so I like the lush and languid visuality of this one. It's the first time I've seen this director's work. I agree, it is incredibly beautiful, but I'm impatient with a scene that drags on forever, even when it's of that incredibly sexy youngest sister. A whole scene with her just dancing? Why? The camera does love her, and especially her face and glowing skin. Why not a scene with her young lover showing the action that made her think she was pregnant? Would that be too much to ask, too Hollywood?

I know many will shudder, but it's best to watch this movie with Tivo. Then you can fast forward through the girl talk and focus on the visuals, the youngest sister, and her incestuous longing for her brother. That's the part I found fascinating and weird.

Princesa
(2001)

Kind of Sexy - Spoilers
I loved the movie as well. It was honest, beautifully written, shot, scored, and casted.

I really liked the protagonist, the he and the she. I disagree with one of the posters that it was sad. Yes, some things didn't work out, but the protagonist still moves on with a hope and a dream that is still in tack. Life is often not perfect, but still, there is beauty in it, just as the policeman said as he so tactfully took the protagonist down from a roof in Milan.

Chile, la memoria obstinada
(1997)

He's not a good propagandist.
This pseudo documentary is just passable, but not that interesting. The people interviewed do have a point of view and it is Leftist, but they simply are not convincing, compelling, or even entertaining.

One of the most damning statements the film included was the fact that very few had died to prevent a subjugation of a country's freedom; far fewer than ever in history. Actually, all of the students statements were more balanced than the protagonists' and the most honest part of the film.

It's a biased documentary, but there is some interesting historical footage that helps flesh out the conditions of the time.

Los lunes al sol
(2002)

Depressing and Tedious
This move is slow, plodding, cold, dark, and without a plot or hope. It follows that tried and true European formula that they love to subsidize, that is never seen, but that the critics think makes an "important point".

The movie is valuable if nothing more than to show the huge difference in the thinking between Americans and Europeans regarding employment. In this movie the men are still nursing their wounds from years ago and feel it's the government's duty to provide them with work. Whereas in the U.S. we know we have to go out there and create value for someone.

Spain never looked so backward!

The Blue Iguana
(1988)

Noir Send Up
This is one of those movies that you see, have no expectations for, and it makes you bust a gut. I had the same reaction to Strange Brew when I first saw it. I love the steamy south-of-the-border feel, the noir farce, and the over-the-top characters. This is the kind of movie, if it had had a wider audience, that could have a cult following.

Commanding Heights: The Battle for the World Economy
(2002)

The best documentary I've ever seen
This should be required viewing for everyone; freely, of course. As an economist, this was pure unadulterated pleasure. The professionalism, photography, music, editing, and storytelling were so superb I'm stunned at its quality and power to rivet everyone to their seats. If this is the only documentary you ever see, please see this series, you'll bless the day you did and you'll stun everyone at cocktail parties with your grasp of the most important ideas and the history of the last century.

This series was especially powerful after having just returned from a tour of Eastern Europe and seeing the Museum of Communism in Prague, and the physical ravages of Communism in the Eastern Block which are still very evident even after 14 years of freedom. We, as Americans, have no idea how incredibly lucky we are. This series will help you understand.

Azúcar amarga
(1996)

Beautifully shot and a great sound track
It was a good movie, entertaining and informative. The black and white was great and the music even better. What a great sound track. I also thought the performance of the Father was the best of the movie.

I thought the other reviews were interesting in that so many were either Castro Apologists or not, not a lot of middle ground.

While the movie may have some factual problems, (like Prague, etc.) I thought it actually soft pedaled how bad things are in Cuba, when women don't even have money for feminine hygiene products. The movie, "When Night Falls" is harder hitting than this one and more substantial. Nevertheless, this movie does a decent job of saying, that Freedom is worth dying for and Tyranny often isn't worth living under. Even Castro's own daughter calls him a tyrant.

It was filmed in Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic with footage from Havana.

Novocaine
(2001)

Impressed with Steve Martin all over again.
Steve Martin has great taste and gets some of the best stories in the industry. I don't think he's made a bad movie and this one is stellar. Novocaine is a little along the lines of Spanish Prisoner and reminds me of Memento. The plot was complex, the acting superb, it was well crafted, surprising, and even funny. When it started out I couldn't help but squirm in my chair due to the horrible decisions the dentist was making. Nevertheless, let me assure you that in the end we all went away feeling fully entertained and pleased. The crowd at the advance screening loved it as well. I continue to be impressed with Steve Martin. How many actors or artists can you honestly say that about? What a great show!

Chun gwong cha sit
(1997)

Mesmerizing
The movie makes quite an impression. The look and feel of the movie is dramatic and stunning. Like the re-occurring theme of the waterfall, I just let the movie wash over me and went with it. The relationship was troubled, but realistic and the movie provided hope. It portrayed profound feelings without offense and touchingly. I chafe at overly emotional things, but this did a fantastic job at making me feel some of the complex emotions these two were going through. Many scenes are incredible in their sheer beauty. Also, it was wonderful that being gay was never the issue. It wasn't a gay film. It was just a relationship. A relationship that ended, but nevertheless, was part of these two men's history, interesting and rich.
