Solo: A Star Wars Story
(2018)

A prequel that is good.
It's the best Star Wars movie I have seen since the 80s.

The pacing is very good. It's fun, action packed and funny. There were a few things I didn't like, but they are nit-picky minor things and spoiler-y so I will leave them off of this review.

I had moderate expectations for this move the first trailer was not great, but the second one improved it. I wasn't excited to see Solo because I have not enjoyed the last few Star Wars films.

Rogue One
(2016)

The Droid was good
Well, Rogue One was a disappointment. It's not terrible. It's just not good. There are a few good moments, but mostly it's not fun.

I'm not sure how it's gotten so many good reviews.

Episode 7 was okay, but it was fun. Which gave it charm.

From the trailers I expected a pretty cool Ocean's Eleven or Dirty Dozen type of Star Wars movie.

It's more akin to Phantom Menace only with less character development, but the same amount of not so great CGI characters.

There is a lot of running around and no time to learn the characters names or even begin to care about them. There is also a bunch of cameos. I did not expect that and it added nothing.

It's the first forgettable Star Wars film and that's probably for the best.

Here's to hoping the next movie is better.

Food, Inc.
(2008)

Mass amounts of info in a short little film
This film is broken into segments ranging from the seed, farmer, product, animal, FDA etc.

Each segment could easily be an hour and half movie. I could understand that may be a little overwhelming, for that I would recommend watching another documentary "King Corn" first which is about corn.

I found the "King Corn" knowledge helpful because "Food Inc" is so crammed with info that little things like why we grow so much corn and soybeans are just mentioned as subsidies without delving into too much detail. "King Corn" will fill in these gaps.

However subsidies aside "Food Inc" is quite impressive in showing the Tyrannical Empire our food industries have become and how they control the farmer, the seed, the worker and even how they are regulated.

Fantastic film.

I would also recommend "The Real Dirt on Farmer John" it's a bit of a biography but entertaining and informative about how locally grown healthy food is not out of your reach.

American Outlaws
(2001)

An enjoyable popcorn flick
If you want a little mindless fun this flick will do the trick. It captures cliff notes version of the James gang story and gives some fun action sequences. For those wild west historians leave the books at home this film shows the good parts of the Jesse James and leaves out how he died to give the film a happy ending. As far as film geeks like myself are concerned the film is not cinematic genius. I felt the score was a little too overpowering. But I will say and I say this rarely the foley was really good adding to the film and not distracting from it. I felt the acting was good except for Tim Dalton who fell a little flat, but no surprise there.

Kiss of the Dragon
(2001)

ninja whamma jamma
This is the Jet Li I want to see from now on. This movie, except for a few moments, is hardcore martial arts butt kicking. It also has a decent story which is always good considering most are "you killed my brother now you will die". I actually would like to see a sequel with the Jet Li character from this flick. If you like kung fu flicks this one is a good choice.

Pearl Harbor
(2001)

What are you people talking about?
As you will have probably noted by this its one of those movies not many people think is okay. There are those who love it and those who want to scream their heads off about how much they hate it. So the only way to find out which one you are is to see it. My biggest problem is with the people who seem to abhor it not because I liked it, even though I did, but because their excuses for not liking it are tired. One comment was that there was not one historical fact in the film, while in fact I can name a couple off the top of my head, i.e. Doris Miller, Doolittle Raid. Another thing that bothered me was how intelligent everyone was trying to sound by finally being able to use the word jingoism. For those who didn't like this movie because there was too much patriotism do yourself a favor find a WWII veteran and talk to him. I am sure you will find out how much we Americans have become shallow little creatures because the people of that era did actually give a damn about something other than themselves. There were only a few but some negative comments on the portrayal of the Japanese. This was one of my favorite things about this, movie although it could have used more screen time. The Admiral comes off as a man doing what his country needs, but has compassion for those he is going to kill and the letter the zero pilot writes just gives a glimpse of the other sides turmoil. If this hadn't been in the film I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much. Cuba Gooding's character is another that is either hated or loved. I would have liked to see more of him, but not at the expense of cutting something else.

Now for the big one people's complaints about history. I hate to be the one to take you from your nice little bubble where everything is perfect, but the truth is history is bent. It is not written with in perfection. It is jotted down by a human that wants to talk about his favorite parts. Proof of this is in a book I got on Charlemagne, which was very good except the author decided to leave out the day he had twenty thousand people slaughtered. There aren't many history books written about after Pearl Harbor America set up concentration camps for all Asian Americans, although German and Italian Americans were allowed to live in America like they always had. It is very hard to find a book on how at the end of WWII America brought Nazi scientists that had part of the holocaust here to continue their horrifying human experiments, sound a little fishy to you well go find out how we created the nerve gas tabun, it was our Nazi scientists. But the big thing to remember is this is a movie. No one pays lots of money to see a documentary. As much as you might like to think the studios are there to make art the truth it's a business and they are not going to back something that does not have a chance at making it's money back.

Some little notes to add are so many complained of it being cliché. Everything has been done already if you think you have a new idea I am sorry but someone else thought it a long time ago. Cliché just means if people liked it so lets do it again. And we do like it because if we didn't there wouldn't be anyone to buy books or see movies. For those of you who are so above doing something that is cliché guess what that is a cliché in it self.

Far too many people said this film was too long. They say to cut the romance and just leave the blowing up stuff. I am not going to comment on the stupidity of our culture and it's downward spiral into incessent babbling. Heck I was happy to feel I got my seven bucks worth after a long line of 80-minute movies. We are coming to the end I swear, but I had to add these couple of things. In one comment while bashing Pearl Harbor it was comparing it to other great films Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart, and Air Force One…What is Air Force One doing on the same level as Ryan and Braveheart. And I laughed heartily when I read a comment stating it had `bad dialogue'. As for reasons I am going to see it again. It is an epic. I like the characters. I love the setting. I love the story. But that doesn't mean you will.

A Knight's Tale
(2001)

A surprising good time
I went to see this flick against my better judgement. I couldn't believe I had dropped eight bucks for it. Then the we will rock you song starts playing and I was tempted to walk out. Ten minutes later I found myself laughing and enjoying it. Before I knew it I was the filmmaker's puppet cheering and jeering when he wanted it. To me this was another clear sign of a bad trailer. I know he isn't the main character, but I feel this film is like Shakespeare in Love for Goeffrey Chaucer and how he came up with The Canterbury Tales. Brian Hegleland said he wants the film to be considered neomedieval which I think works. He also said the first cut was three hours. I can't wait for dvd.

Spy Kids
(2001)

good time
It isn't my favorite of Rodriguez's films, but it is fun. I didn't think I could like a kids movie, but I did. Antonio and Danny Trejo were great doing things they've never done in a movie before. The production design is incredible.

Pitch Black
(2000)

Enjoyment lurks in the darkness
I read a few comments, bringing up the alien films. This is not alien it is better it is a sci-fi horror flick with the right element. Sure the first alien film made me jump the first time I saw it, but for me it will never be as good as the first time. As for aliens well it was little more than an action film, not that that is bad but the horror aspect was completely lost. Bringing me back to Pitch Black and what makes it such a good film. The one thing that scares us all when outside at night and we hear a sound. We strain our eyes to see what unknown evil lies waiting in the darkness. That is what makes this film special and keeps your attention. In alien you knew it was somewhere in the shadows and you waited for it to pop out so someone could shoot it. Pitch Black's characters only have the defense of what little light they come up with and you know at the edge of that light the creatures lurking surrounding, watching, waiting at fuzzy area where your straining eyes can barely see the outline of their movement.

The Dead Hate the Living!
(2000)

Good til the last drop
This is a horror film for horror fans by horror fans. It is a different zombie flick with homages to so many films. My favorite line is when Dave is freakin out and says "What would Bruce Campbell do?". Much respect to the make up, the character maggot is like nothing I have ever seen. Another plus is that the Dr. Eibon looks like Rob Zombie, it's so freakin cool. The movie starts out kinda slow, but picks up in the second act and the cgi shots weren't perfect, except for the gunshot which was very well done, but what do you expect from a low budget zombie flick eh? All in all this is definitely worth a watch if you're a horror fan.

Die Hard
(1988)

A action classic
This film spawned many clones and two sequels of its own. What makes this story so wonderful is the character John McClane, an average joe cop who life follows Murphy's Law, anything bad that can happen will. The movie is timeless.

Scream 3
(2000)

This is not my favorite scary movie.
Jay and Silent Bob are the best part of this film. Without getting into any spoilers, the biggest problem is that this movie doesn't live up to any of its promises. It isn't anymore than another sequel. What promises are broken, well they talk about the rules of the third installment of a trilogy and don't follow them. This could be consider fake foreshadowing to throw the viewer off, but I think it just shows just how unwilling they are to do something different with this film. Now there are a few good laughs and exciting moments, but I feel that although it is better than the scream 2 it isn't anything more than an average sequel and not a good ending to the trilogy.

The Green Mile
(1999)

Shut up it's dust in the air or somthin'
This movie is one of the best films ever. Mike C. Duncan is amazing. The production designer deserves an award. Now what stopped me from seeing this film for so long was its length. I just couldn't get myself in the mood to sit for a three hour drama, but it seemed like it was an hour long. I can't recommend this film higher. And well I'm man enough to admit that it is a touching story, that had me pullin that "there's some dirt in my eye" routine in the theater.

Galaxy Quest
(1999)

This movie is Trekrific!
I love this flick and I intended to see it again. First let me say that if you are not a fan of science fiction like Star Trek, Babylon 5, or Battlestar Galatica then don't see this movie, but if you are some variation of trekkie you'll get all the jokes and it is funny. On a more critique note it is a solid movie with great special effects and fabulous acting to sell the film, Alan Rickman is great. The best way to describe this film without spoilers is this is a comedy for sci-fi fans like Mystery Men was for comic book fans. Now I'm not saying this movie isn't enjoyable if you didn't like star trek I just don't think you will get a lot of the jokes and with a PG rating it is definitely a family film. I saw a some kids in the theater when I went and they seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. I give an A for writing, acting, and....ahh heck just take my word for it you wont waste your money.

Safe House
(1998)

Worth Seeing
The story is original and Patrick Stewart acting make this a great film. I liked Star Trek The Next Generation, but never really was a trekkie, Patrick Stewart amazed me with this role as an ex-black-OPs who is getting Alzheimer's. The role is funny and depressing and he pulls it off masterfully.

The Long Kiss Goodnight
(1996)

Sam is the frikkin' man
This film has some of the best Sam Jackson lines I have ever heard. It was directed by Renny Harlin who gave us Deep Blue Sea another film with Jackson. The only problem I had about this flick was that Gina Davis just wasn't they perfect choice for the lead role, but she does a good job.

The Crow
(1994)

Man, I miss Brandon
While digging through a box of my video tapes I found The Crow and watched it for the first time in a few years. I can't believe how I could have forgotten such a great movie. And it just sucks that we will never see Brandon Lee do anything else because he was the perfect combination of actor and martial artist. The production design on the film is beautiful along with the cinematography. The music and lighting really set a mood. This is just a fabulous tale of vengeance.

Desperado
(1995)

Rodriguez hits another homerun
This flick rules. With El Mariachi he show that movies coul be made with out millions of dollars, then with Desperado He showed Hollywood that with 7 million dollars he could make his movie look like one of their 70 million dollar movies. When I found out His first film was made with seven grand I was amazed, but when I found out Desperado was made for only 7 million my jaw hit the floor. This movie is fabulous with great stunts and a good story not to mention some great acting from Buscemi, Quetin Tarantino, Cheech Marin, Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Tito. Strongly Reccommend this film to anybody who fun and fast movies.

Army of Darkness
(1992)

Shop smart, shop S-Mart
One of the coolest movies ever kicks even more bootie. The DVD Director's cut rules. The studio ending pales in comparison to Raimi's mind-twisting ending. And I just wish Bruce got more work. There is fifteen minutes more movie so this note is for all you deadites out there who don't that a director's cut is available.

El mariachi
(1992)

Rodriguez is my God
Rodrigeuz showed the world that Hollywood overspends on it's low budget 60 million dollar films by making a film for seven grand. He was a lab rat for 3 months so that he would have time to write a script and rake in 3 grand. He is one of my top three favorite directors. This film moves quickly and are fun something I feel lacks in many independant films.

Resurrection
(1999)

Why was this straight to video?
I don't think any one will forget the abomination that Russell Mulcahy in Highlander 2. I liked his Tale of the Mummy, but it was smart to put that straight to video because it would not have held it's own against the marketing giant of Universal's mummy movie. Resurrection on the other hand is different it is really good and yet no theater release. Yes it is a lot like Seven, but with two things that make it a hundred times better than Seven. First is that Leland Orser is incredible. And second there is no Brad, yep that's right this movie gets better and better.

New Rose Hotel
(1998)

I love Asia
This movie wouldn't even have been worth seeing if it wasn't for Christopher Walken and Asia Argento. Chris has a few good lines. And Asia (ohh man) I have wanted her to make an American movie ever since I saw her in her father's film Trauma. So all you casting directors out there put Asia in more movies. All in all this isn't a good film, but I have seen much worse.

Very Bad Things
(1998)

rotflmao
This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen in my life. You never know when the chaos is going to stop. It just keeps getting more and more screwed up as it goes. It's an A+. That's all I can say without ruining any of the film.

The World Is Not Enough
(1999)

Bad, Real Bad
I like bond films and think Pierce Brosnan does well in the role, but number 19 just isn't worth a dime. Brosnan, Marceau, and Carlyle are good if you overlook a few badly written lines, but what casting director in their right mind would hire the girl whose past great work has been a bad rendition of Starship Troopers, a slutty thriller, and a black comedy about beauty pagents. Denise Richards is cancer of this film not matter how much you sink into the film she spews forth some ridiculus badly acted line, i.e. "or do you want a glimmer". It is easy to see that she was not hired for her acting skills, but her fake assets. Come on Hollywood both Famke Janseson and Michelle Yeoh were both beautiful and good actresses don't insult the audience. Then in the story her character stays with Bond because she'll be in trouble if she doesn't get back the nuclear warhead. She is a freakin' scientist why is she held accountable if terrorists shoot up her government lab steal a nuke and kill bunches of people. I think that the government would be in trouble not Christmas Jones. The whole movie is just a vehicle for stupid sexual jokes. This movie gets a D-.

Braveheart
(1995)

Perfection
I go to the movies to see films like this one. A powerful story with very good acting, wonderful cinematography, and great directing. The battle scenes show the chaos of war and yet one must remember it is all a well planned ballet. If you have a pulse I don't see why there isn't something for you to like about this film.
