The Way We Live Now
(2001)

A little gem
I admit I had never heard of this TV movie until a few weeks ago, as it never arrived on Italian TV. However I managed to buy the British DVD and I must say I'm glad I did. It's set in 1870, but the similarities with our own age are staggering, you're going to laugh and shiver at the same time... Trollope's characters are simply hilarious and the acting is amazing. Such an ensemble is quite remarkable even for British TV. Suchet of course, who's nothing short of mephistophelic and truly mesmerizing. MacFayden is excellent too as the annoying fop. Shirley Henderson and Paloma Baeza are always fine. I've read many inane comments about Cillian Murphy being "miscast" or "not looking like a young engineer". I pray you, how a young engineer should look like? His character is a ward of a man who's 50, of course he's young. I don't think Murphy was chosen because of his pretty face, but because even at 24 he was a very accomplished actor. He brings innocence and integrity to Paul Montague, adding also a wild flash in his eyes that suggests a dangerous past. Yes he's young and delicate looking, but is this a fault? Do looks determine what roles should a great actor play? I think it's nonsense. Watch the movie, you won't regret it.

The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas
(2000)

Now I know....
I've always wondered why the prequel to the successful Flintstones movie ended up as straight to video stuff. The plot itself was utterly dumb, and the "SFX" quite laughable. I would have thrown the VHS out of the window, were it not for the girl who played Wilma (I think she was pretty good), and most of all Alan Cumming. OK, Mr Cumming is definitely the best thing in this wreck of a movie: he steals the scene playing the Great Gazoo...and he completely revives the last part of the movie playing Mick Jagged (a kind of cross between Austin Powers and Mick Jagger). He was the only reason I didn't fall asleep.

The Long and Short of It
(2003)

Little gem
I loved this short movie, it's funny and sweet at the same time. The message of the story may be simple, but it's also universal.

The short is very well directed (hey Sean, you're pretty good!) and the actors are priceless: just look at Andrew Lesnie's face!

Of course, LOTR fans will enjoy it immensely: if you've bought FOTR, the extended edition, you're obviously going to recognize everyone: Lesnie is LOTR's wonderful director of photography, and the other two characters of this short movie are stunt doubles.

Don't miss the closing credits, they're hilarious.

La leggenda di Al, John e Jack
(2002)

best Aldo Giovanni & Giacomo to date
I haven't understood why people disliked this movie so much. I think it's the best Aldo Giovanni & Giacomo movie to date! The previous three films were good, but this one is superior because it's a real movie with a real plot and a real script, not just a bunch of sketches. And it's extremely witty & funny, I nearly laughed my head off.

The Velocity of Gary
(1998)

I'm surprised
I'm surprised this movie got so many bad reviews. I bought it because of Thomas Jane, but I ended up loving the whole movie. Sure Mr Jane adds new interesting definitions to the word "beauty", and his performance was incredibly good, showing us a quiet desperation. I wonder why do studios always cast good looking actors who cannot act their way out of a paper bag, while there *are* some good actors who are also very good looking. Who knows? Anyway, the movie was good, I didn't understand much of the title, but I loved the dark humor (the death of the deaf transvestite) and the depth of the feelings portrayed. It's not a movie for everyone, I understand not many persons will enjoy it, but if you like odd love stories, it's your film.

Original Sin
(2001)

better than I thought
I thought this one could be a real stinker. I ended up kinda liking it. All right, the sex scenes were ludicrous and the ending is just plain *stoopid*, but I loved the music and the costumes. Poor Antonio Banderas was rather nice, but his character looked quite dumb. Angelina Jolie couldn't save this film but at least she tried to. On the other hand, I really liked the supporting actors: Thomas Jane was the only sexy thing in the whole movie as everyone's favourite sadistic bully. His character was loathsome, but there was some strength in Mr Jane's performance, I thought his Billy was the only one who cared about something. All he knew was violence, that's the way he was raised, and he expressed his "love" with violence. Very compelling performance. And it's always nice to see Jack Thompson: he was typecast but he's always a first class actor.
