Herzblatt oder Wie sag' ich's meiner Tochter?
(1969)

Beautiful innocent young girl causes stirrup
Herzblatt is such a beautiful young girl but she doesn't know she might cause trouble sunbathing in the nude on a terrace high up on a house. She even causes a crew of construction workers to fall off a neighbouring house because they're so keen to see her. Her father tries to convince her that it would be better to wear something because she is a woman now with all the attributes of a very beautiful woman. The movie very much covers the naughty attitude of young people of the late 1960s, the first generation in Germany who was born after WW2 and therefore never experienced the hardships of the war and the years that followed. This comedy is an example of German entertainment that intends just solely to entertain and not to educate people or to give them advice. It's simply fun to watch this silly little movie which can't at all be compared with contemporary erotic movies, especially not with American movies of the kind.

7th Heaven
(1996)

Too much political correctness
I would say that 7th Heaven tries to promote too much "political correctness". In fact I think 7H is more conservative than The Waltons which were aired a long time ago. And the thing that I like least about 7H is that different views on contraception or when to have sex for the first time or how far parents should sneak into the private life of their kids are usually depicted as absolutely wrong. However, there are different philosophies on all these topics and none of them can be out-ruled. Hah, I was most bewildered by Eric's remarks early into the current seasons that he thinks abstinence is the most important thing in the world. Just imagine these words are coming from a man who fathered 7 children (at least). Well, we haven't, so far, been informed about Eric's life before he met Annie. So how could we rule out that he's got another skeleton in the locker just like Charles Jackson did...

Jurassic Park III
(2001)

not the state of the art
First of all I would like to say that JP III is mainly a potpourri of a lot of dinosaurs showing up at random and having been chosen for their brutality. That's not up to the standard of the other 2 "Jurassic Park" movies. And second, I have to point out that the JP III movie has absolutely nothing to do with Crichton's third JP novel. I believe the movie would have been a lot better if the movie makers had used Mr. Crichton's story plot. The novel is great, the movie isn't. I don't understand why experienced movie makers sometimes make such bad mistakes. It was, however, somewhat interesting that new species of dinos were introduced. However, only brutal dinos were used. And for example, why would the Pterodaktyls (the flying dinos) attack people? Weren't they bound for much smaller prey?

Lightning: Fire from the Sky
(2001)

Quite unrealistic
This movie is quite unrealistic. Obviously the story writers didn't bother collect information on weather phenomena. The big problem with colliding weather system isn't lightning but torrential rains accompanied with floodings, and strong storms, even tornados. It is also obsolete that a boy would find out more about the weather than the weather forecasting organisations like the NOAA and others. There are so many exciting scenarios for weather-related disasters--so why did they choose something so unrealistic?

Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III
(1994)

Disappointing
Just like so many people before me I also am disappointed by the third part of North and South. In part the problem is that too many changes from the original story in books 1 and 2 had been made in the mini series. Therefore a lot of things didn't quite work out. In John Jakes' novels, Orry Main died in "Love and War", having been shot in the head by Elkanah Bent. So he wouldn't have been there anyway. But the biggest problem was the omission of Cooper Main in the first 2 mini series. For those who didn't know the book his sudden appearance must have been quite puzzling. Also, in the mini series part II Virgilia Hazard is executed, but not in the second novel. She shows up in the third novel! As to the murders mentioned in other comments, there are quite a few in the novel. And what I also don't like about part III is that so many actors were replaced. Was that necessary?

North and South
(1985)

Great mini series - at least for those who don't know the book
North And South is a very interesting and well done mini series. One of the best I've ever seen. Though, when I read the book, written by John Jakes I was a bit disappointed because I found out that there were quite a few changes in the TV version. In the book Elkanah Bent, that guy who became Orry's and George's worst enemy, was said to be an obese man from Indiana. In the Series, however, he is a skinny man from Georgia. And, much more important, the book begins with George and Orry meeting on their way to West Point. This is the very beginning point, and from this the whole story spreads. In the TV version, however, Orry first meets Madeline, and then he travels to West Point and meets George. And: Orry's brother Cooper, an important character in the book, is completely omitted in the mini series. I could add a lot more things that differ but that would lead too far. Well, for those who don't know the book the mini series is really great, and of course it deserves a good rating. But some of the changes made in the TV version were unnecessary.

Tierarzt Dr. Engel
(1998)

To me Doctor Engel is the German Dr. Herriot
I like this show. It's one of the best series currently (May 2002) running on German TV. Doctor Quirin Engel somehow reminds me of Dr. Herriot from the long-running British TV series "All Creatures Great and Small". I think I didn't miss a single episode so far.

The Wizard of Oz
(1939)

one of my favorite movies
I always check my German TV guide if this movie is running again. There is so much real great fantasy and fun in it - I think it is one of the best movies that was produced in Hollywood.

When you watch it you simply forget about real life and you are virtually IN IT as if you were a part of the movie.

Judy Garland is the greatest Dorothy ever, and I don't think there will ever be a "Wizard of Oz" adaption (movie or TV, never mind) that could match this movie.
