Primo
(2023)

Super Sweet
At the risk of sounding cliché, the show is heartfelt + hilarious with the right amount of edginess. I love every member of the cast, and it makes me wish I had five brothers. The mom is amazing and Rafa/Primo is one lucky kid. I'm so grateful to be able to watch a show with positive role models, even if they aren't perfect. The characters are distinct personalities, which adds to the humor, The plot lines were clever and wrapped up nicely in eight episodes (although a longer season would have been welcome). My favorite episode was the one about the family picnic. I hope this show comes back for a few more seasons.

Jojo Rabbit
(2019)

A Cautionary Tale and Wonderful Film
My takeaway from this movie (which I saw with my husband on Thursday and our 16 year old son on Friday) is that we have to watch what garbage our kids consume. If they are exposed to poisonous ideologies, they will be conflicted. In Jojo's case, he had a parent(s) with a healthy moral compass, so he had an anchor at home to guide his better angels. His mother repeated the mantra for the insane time of Nazi rule..."They did what they could." This referred to people persecuted and killed for thwarting the dictatorship. I completely took this as satire, and it's still a movie that made me cry for joy and sorrow. I will watch anything Taika Waititi creates, and I hope that he makes more thought-provoking cinema like this. Also, I loved the actor performances in this movie. Nothing was precious, just heartbreaking sometimes.

The Head Hunter
(2018)

Hurrah for Value Engineered Filmmaking and One Tough Monster Hunter!
Suspense and sparse dialogue set this movie apart. It's so refreshing to get to use imagination to fill in the details. Rygh embodied the central character so much that I wondered if it was hard to reenter 2019. This is a paragon for a great movie on a microbudget. I hope that they make another. Bravo.

Kingdom
(2019)

Captivating Decapitations (and so much more!)
Echoing the other reviews on here, this drama/horror show/period piece is a magical conglomeration of genres. Great acting by all! The sets are amazing, the makeup for the undead is topnotch, and the social commentary is interesting. AND THE HATS! What a way to learn about a culture through their historic headwear. I am eagerly awaiting season two! Bravo!

American Crime
(2015)

Season Three as strong as the previous two
Just two episodes in, and I am hooked and heart-broken again. I just keep thinking "this is all around us, this is all around us." The strawberries that we ate for dinner? And the low cost hotel I drive by on the way to work..what's happening in those fields and rooms?

The new members of the cast are as strong as the old. I feel that the issues that American Crime addresses this season are wider-reaching, yet personal at the same time.

It's hard to watch bright and shiny commercials during the show - a weird juxtaposition.

Mars
(2010)

Bottle Rocket in Space
Quirky: check. Perhaps not Oscar-worthy acting: check. Creative love story or stories: check. Reluctantly happy and wealthy "sidekick:" check. Swimming pool scene: check. JUMPSUITS: check.

I love this movie. Maybe some might say my bar isn't set super-high, but Bottle Rocket is my favorite movie, and this comes close to that (I also like science fiction and graphic novels). My boys watched it (9 & 11) because the profanity was mild, and there were only cigars and champagne.

Don't want to ramble on, but this is supposed to have ten lines. If you just want escape for about 90 minutes, this is the film for you. If you like a more polished movie in terms of acting, story line and production, perhaps you should pass or you'll be really sad.

The Food of the Gods
(1976)

True...so bad it's good.
My dad took me to see this at the movie theater when I was seven. It's a cautionary tale about environmental issues that has stuck with me for 30 years, despite the horrible, horrible "special effects" and rotten acting. The aforementioned worms were the worst. I tried to wait in the lobby until the movie was finished, but the theater staff thought I might get abducted (guess my dad didn't). At the end, I think that one of the characters has a baby during an assault of the giant creatures which was just as mind blowing to me. The final scene was gripping...I didn't want to drink milk for awhile. Anyway, maybe hold off on showing your little ones this movie.
