The Last King of Scotland
(2006)

Awesome movie!
First let me say that if Forrest Whitiker doesn't get Best Supporting Oscar for this the academy should be charged with a felony. This is one of the best acting performances that I have ever seen, and makes the movie worth watching. Watch this film, if only to see this performance.

As far as the movie, the only part that didn't flow was the Doctor (yes, I know he is the main character), who was sort of a weak character that I was never really able to get a grip on. This maybe due to the fact that I was trying to like him, but he was really wasn't likable. He was selfish, arrogant, and naive. The kind of man who thinks he knows everything, and is too stupid to realize that he is stupid. Even though the main character wasn't Amin I think it worked really well, because we saw Amin through the eyes of a doctor who ended up being a participant in Amin's crimes (and probably was aware of what he was doing, but was shocked with the result).

You start by seeing Amin as this hero of the people, and then realize that he is a paranoid madman. I don't think that same effect could have been done with Amin as the main character. What this movie did really well is establish the suspense, especially at the end. Even though I didn't like the doctor at all, and if anybody was deserving of torture it was him, I was still horrified during the climax, and relieved when he was able to escape (through an heroic act of a minor character).

This movie has a lot in common with Hotel Rwanda, except it is not a tale of heroism in the face of hatred. Except for the final act of the minor character there is nothing heroic done in this movie.

Quintuplets
(2004)

The worst sitcom ever!
I strongly believe that anybody wishing to write for a sitcom should be forced to watch this show, and dissect how exactly not to write a TV show. I would love to talk about what makes this show so bad, but it is kind of like untangling the Christmas lights. You just don't know where to start.

I'll start with this: How, if you have quintuplets, do you end up with a playboy, a pervert, a 'special' child, a social outcast, and a prom queen, all of which look nothing alike? This is so bad that the Clippers are no longer the worst thing to come out of Southern California.

Beyond Rangoon
(1995)

Better than average.
I would give this movie a good strong 7. While it definantly isn't the greatest movie, or even one the best movies of it's kind (The Killing Fields is better) it does at least attempt to tell a necessary story.

I think the method of introducing Laura into Burma was a bit contrived. First of all, Burma isn't exactly the easiest country to visit, especially in the late 80's. Secondly, if you did make it Burma, your passport would not get lost. A sane person would make darn sure they knew where their passport was at all times. With that in mind, I'm sure the screenwriter knew that was weak, but needed something. Patricia Arquette's performance was understated, and I just didn't buy that she was a doctor. However, at least she didn't overact the role, which often happens in movies like this. U Aung Ko was good, but also understated. The end is hard to follow, since most of the dialogue is in Burmese, with people translating for Laura. It would have been difficult for Laura, and is difficult for the viewer as well. Another plus is the strong SE Asian scenery in the film, which was enjoyable to see.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
(2002)

A good movie, much better than Episode I
This is probably the second best of all the Star Wars movies. Empire is definitely better, but this is better than "A New Hope." Regardless, it's a whole lot better than Episode I (which isn't saying much).

I watched the Episode I because, well it's the law. I watched it again to see if it was as bad as I thought it was, it was. That won't be true with Episode II.

Episode II starts out a little slow (and that's an understatement). With in the first few scenes you see Jar Jar, and think "oh crap, here we go again." The convoluted love scenes with Anakin and Padme are difficult, but not totally unbearable. Mixed in with a split story with Obi Wan, which makes it confusing to follow. The guy next to me was snoring like a lawn mower!

Second half is some of the best action I've ever scene, mixed in with excellent character moments. You literally get to watch Anakin move from an obnoxious, arrogant kid, to a deeply troubled young man (setting us up for a great episode III). I chewed through a straw in Empire, and if I had one here I would have done the same at some scenes in Episode II.

The only drawback with this movie is too much plot. The plot is like a James Bond movie, with 16 different locations. You're exhausted in the end. The excess if action plot doesn't allow for character development that the first (holy) trilogy has.

Life's Work
(1996)

Good show
Is it just me, or was this show really good. I miss it, and wish some how I could get every episode. It was the second show that I started watching, only to get cancelled. Lisa Anne Walters should get her own show again, preferably with Michael O'Keefe and set in Baltimore.

Office Space
(1999)

Gets better each time!
This is one of the few movies that is like fine wine. It gets much better with age. If you watched this movie only one time, and came away thinking "Well, that was sort of good!" watch it again. It really does lend itself to multiple viewings! The first time I watched it, I would have given it a 7. I've watched at least 20 times, and it is clearly a strong 10. One of the best movies, and best comedies of the 90's.

George of the Jungle
(1997)

Great Movie
This is one of those movies that I can watch again and again, and it gets better each time. I don't really understand what made it such a good movie, because on the surface it is just incredibly stupid. Stupid joke, studid story, stupid characters, but somehow when it gets put together it works great. When I first watched this movie I was ashamed that I enjoyed so much, and now I think it is one of the better comedies I've seen. At least eight stars!

Bedazzled
(2000)

Wonder Bread Sandwich
This movie was like making a good sandwich with Wonder Bread. The beginning is slow, and I didn't like the end, but the middle was funny as hell.

It takes a long time for this movie to really get started. Elliot Richardson is such a loser at the beginning that it is painful to watch. He isn't even one of those lovable losers like Rob Schneider's copy man. He is a painfully annoying loser. His office mates are probably the biggest jerks that anyone has ever had the misfortune of working with.

Just about the time I was getting really uncomfortable watching such annoying characters the movie finally starts. Once Elliot meets the devil the movie gets pretty good. Parts are a lot like `George of The Jungle.' There are a lot of really corny lines, and site gags. Brendan Fraser does those type of lines really well, and I really enjoyed them.

Elizabeth Hurley has been panned for her performance, but I thought she did quite well. She seemed a perfect fit for the devil, and I could really picture her as a devilish vixen toying with Elliot's mind. A lot like Lucy holding the ball for Charlie Brown, the devil gets Elliot's trust only to pull everything out from under him. The idea of the devil being a vixen works better than an old man, but Peter Cook is a better actor than Elizabeth Hurley. Anyway, just being Elizabeth Hurley is worth a few bucks right there.

The movie built well on itself. Each wish was a little faster paced and funnier than the last. Right as his wishes were coming to an end I was thinking he was close to a classic.

Then the end came. The last half hour of this thing turns from a corny comedy (a very good one at that) to a sappy fable (and not the greatest either). It wasn't awful, it just was a bit cookie cutter and corporate. Everything was put into its nice little package, and everyone feels good at the end.

All in all, not a bad way to spend two hours.
