Wag the Dog
(1997)

Good beginning and middle, too brief end.
I thought the acting was great and the story was fun. I think politics are boring, but this movie held my interest. Several memorable one-liners, amusing scenes, and numerous fuzzy kittens, all of which came together to make a great movie for smiling.

I thought it was ironic how this movie was clearly a comedy, while the cast of characters within the movie is trying to film a drama. As a result, you find yourself laughing at several scenes within the movie, which are completely dramatic to the audience within the movie. It was strange and interesting.

My only quibble is that it seemed to end rather abruptly, and left a few loose ends dangling. I was watching the television edit so it's possible they were trying to cram it into an insufficient time slot, I'm not sure.

Dude, Where's My Car?
(2000)

Stupid, in a good way. Kind of.
This was one of the absolute stupidest movies I have ever seen. It had hundreds of jokes which were just really corny, or which dragged on far too long. Several scenes involve the same two lines being repeated over and over. For example, if you've seen the trailers, you're already aware of the "And Then..." Chinese Food window gag. What you may not be aware of is that the joke actually goes on for over two minutes. If you're not sick of jokes like these after seeing the trailers, you'll definitely be sick of them by the end of the movies.

The "lost car" plot eventually gives way to a second extremely corny sci-fi plot which could appeal to nobody. The characters are reminiscent of the characters in "Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey", with low-budget futuristic wardrobes and emotionless dialogue which goes nowhere.

Overall, I would say this is a good movie to laugh at. The random choice of wardrobes, accents, props and plot turns lead me to believe that perhaps the movie's plot was the result of a bad round of "Mad Libs".

Keep an eye out for Michael Bower, A.K.A "Donkey Lips" as Big Cult Guy #2.

The Return of the Pink Panther
(1975)

All the fun of a slapstick comedy, without the comedy.
This movie was recommended to me by a friend, so we watched it together on his DVD player. Yawn. Way too much dialogue, and jokes which have been done 100 times before. Examples include sloppily disguised cherry bombs, pies to the face, chase scenes ceasing so that one of the parties can answer a phone call, etc... etc... I felt rude doing so, but nonetheless I left for bed in the middle of the movie, as I felt myself nodding off anyways.

The film was simply very slow moving for a comedy. They take a normal slapstick style joke, like the crushing of a cream-filled pastry over a man's head, and drag it out so that it takes two minutes to set up and twenty seconds to execute. I would estimate this movie to be about as entertaining as any given Merrie Melodie slowed down to 1/8 speed.

Meet the Parents
(2000)

A must miss!
Barf. Similar to "What about Bob", you have a likeable good guy who hits a spell of bad luck and ends up with everybody hating him. Considering it was a comedy, there were some rather long parts of the film during which no laughter was heard throughout the audience. In particular, the last five minutes, and the stop-and-go car race home. Yawn.

There were several pee-pee and poo-poo jokes which left the toddlers in the audience giggling all the way home. Overall, however, not very many memorable lines, nor a very original premise. I give it a 4/10.

The Insider
(1999)

Dull, like most based-on-a-true-story films.
I was looking forward to seeing this movie, but it thoroughly bored me. I thought it was going to be about a man's struggle to bring down the tobacco industry but it was not quite that important, it was more about a man's struggle to inform the public of what they already probably knew anyways.

The film took about an hour and a half to build up, and it really didn't have seem to climax anywhere. There wasn't really a single place during the movie where I cared about what was going to happen next.

The acting was good and the cinematography was good too, but overall the movie was a too long and too insubstantial. Could have easily been a full hour shorter without losing any content.

Cube
(1997)

Lots of sinking-stomach moments
Sometimes in horror movies, something happens to a character which more or less seals his or her fate - Like in Speed when the bomb squad trips a laser, and they get two seconds to look at the detector before the house explodes, or in Event Horizon when they find the bomb on the ship, but it only has 4 seconds remaining, or in Scream when the girl gets caught in the cat door... You know they're almost definitely going to die very soon, and you get this sinking feeling in your stomach! I love these kinds of scenes, and even though the Cube had a very small cast, there were many of these "impending doom" scenes.

Gekijô-ban poketto monsutâ - Myûtsû no gyakushû
(1998)

A severe disappointment.
I enjoy the Game Boy, Pokemon, and even the TV show, and I expected the movie to be similar to the TV show, filled mostly with humor and cuteness and a few pokemon battles. However, the movie is not very much like the TV show. There's about 8 jokes in the movie, and the rest is an attempt at a dull plot with a predictable moral.

The initial 20-minute short was embarrassing to watch, particularly because of the 30-second pokemon interludes which can only be described as a sort of pokemon-fantasia.

Overall, I can understand why a pokemon fan would want to perhaps rent this movie, but I would highly recommend against it. I recommend instead renting one of the episodes, which are much more entertaining.

Kill the Man
(1999)

The comedy is great, the romance is unnecessary. Overall a very funny movie.
This movie was very funny, and probably had the best joke-to-dollar ratio of any movie I've seen. That is, given the fact that 2/3 of the movie takes place within the copy shop, they do a lot with it. I personally felt that the romantic element didn't add much to the movie, and that's the movie's one major drawback. Although the actors are all no-names, the actors were very good, and fit the parts well.
