Beerfest
(2006)

Beerfest is kinda like Snakes on a Plane
You can't go in to this movie expecting it to be a great piece of art, the director did after all do "Dukes of Hazard" but it is mildly entertaining and has a few moments where it shines. To be as concise as I can be- It is funny, it makes you want to go to Munich and drink lots of beer (just like Goodfellas makes me want to smoke cigarettes) and it has a good heart. In my neck of the woods a matinée is $7.50 and that was about what I'd say it was worth. It can vary slightly at times from the plot to make a bad joke, and it gets a little hokey after the funeral (I'm not spoiling anything there) but it has a few classic lines, some interesting comments on society and American prejudices, dishes slightly below the belt without offending anyone, is filled with toilet humor, and throws in some eye candy to (das) boot. If you know your Germanic cinema history there are some subtle and not so subtle homages. Just like SoaP, don't go in expecting art, and you will come out with a smile. Ribbit!

Nine Lives
(2005)

disjointed and annoying
I walked out after the 3rd "segment" because I simply could not watch such crap. My girlfriend stayed while I went to the bar next door. After the movie, she met me in the lobby and we ran out of there as quickly as we could. We did not want to stay for the Q&A with the director afterwords. Terrible over the top acting, and the script treats these women as victims who are unable to help themselves, they have been brought down by (the system, their ex-boyfriend, their father, etc...) and can not will themselves out. Shows no plot, no story development, no character progression, just a "slice-O- life" that makes no sense in the context. One reviewer who loved this movie mentioned it is in the caliber of "The 400 Blows." I hope reviewer has actually seen that movie to make such a bold statement. I give this movie a 2 and not a 1 simply because I think the no-cuts steady cam shots are pretty cool and I know how hard it is to pull off (although the framing was terrible throughout the entire thing) and make work.

Dig!
(2004)

Fun and interesting
DIG! is funny, fun, amusing, interesting, stylish, and very well done. Knowing that it was made on such a shoestring budget over 7 years it is amazing that such a story can be told, especially with such style and substance. If you are a music fan or documentary fan this is a must see.

Focusing on The Brian Jonestown Masssacre and The Dandy Warhols over the years is a brilliant way to show the contrast between a decent band who meets with moderate success through perseverance and the ability to compromise and a genius megalomaniacal lead singer backed up by a varied cast of characters who sabotage their own success through drugs, alcohol, and insanity. If I did not know that this is footage of real people, I would swear it was an incredibly well written and imaginative scripted piece. The story is compelling, concise, and simply amazing.

Goodfellas
(1990)

"The" gangster film
Every time I watch Goodfellas I have this undeniable urge to drink, smoke, and swear like a sailer on leave. Or in this case like the characters in Goodfellas. The movie tells the story of Henry Hill's rise through the organized crime racket through the 1950s-1980s. While it may be stylized and written for Hollywood the story it is based on is true. Any guy that has not yet seen this movie can not call himself a man. It is the quintessential guys movie, and Marty (as I like to call him) has done a wonderful and subtle job of directing the characters so they are outrageous without being over the top. This is a movie that has great character development and a fantastic cast as well as some of the best dialogue in film history.

The Company
(2003)

Altman's worst
This film is tedious, self absorbed, and eternally boring. I watched it with 3 young women and as a heterosexual male I thought I would hate it the most. I was wrong. I liked it better than 3 sensitive artistic women. Does that say anything? A balet movie that sucks, who would have thought it?

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
(2003)

Exactly what it should be.
Return of the King is exactly what it should be. A fantastic and imaginative epic adventure film with mind-blowing action/battle scenes, suspense, drama, and special effects. If any movie is worth your money ($11.50 now in LA) it is this one. It is proof that Peter Jackson was the only person who could pull this off. I am not really a LOTR fan per se, but enjoyed the films for what they are. The third installment is the best and should be seen in a big loud theater to get the most enjoyment. I must say that the ending is even longer than I expected despite the fact I was warned ahead of time! It is really extraordinarily long. Pee before you enter the theater!!!
