Eins og skepnan deyr
(1986)

"The Beast"
This is an amazingly bad film! Truly, deeply awful, for those of us not understanding Icelandic, the English dubbing is heinous. But combined with a hazy, blurry plot line, groan-inducing acting and editing to cause cries of "what goes on here?" the beast is an ugly animal.

We the audience were unsure of what was going on, the actors looked like they didn't know, and if there was a director on the set, he certainly wasn't showing any sign of directing! If you want a truly great movie from Iceland of similar vintage, but light-years better watching, try Djöflaeyjan {Devil's Island) http://imdb.com/title/tt0116116

Quincannon, Frontier Scout
(1956)

Intelligent western...
I saw this movie late one night and early the next morning, and was impressed with the sympathetic viewpoint of the complex Indian tribal situation.

This sure beats many movies which use "red men" as cannon-fodder, treating them as unique individuals with their own culture and reasons for doing things.

Ôdishon
(1999)

Stylish, clever, exciting and unsettling!
This movie is better than any poor reviewer can hope to describe, the cinematography is wonderful in it's magical balance of subtle effect, never getting in front of the story, simply underlining the current mood.

The clever use of time-flips, and "Was it all a dream" concepts, with the careful use of the barest minimum of special effects, means it is a more cerebral than visual thriller, but there are visuals to see! Maybe never to forget!

I highly recomend this movie, but as it is not readily available, one must keep a patient watch on film fests...

Beat the Devil
(1953)

Fascinating...
As Spock would say, "Most Intriguing". This move has some of the most fascinating characters playing with and against one another, and a delightful pace, so un-hurried as to be in another place altogether.

This is the perfect movie for an afternoon of video watching, with as much wity repartee on either side of the tv screen!

Friends and Lovers
(1931)

Turgid love-hate under the Indian sun...
This is a wonderful pre-code pot-boiler with sterling performances from it's lead players, plenty of action and the man "You Love to Hate" Eric von Stroheim, at his most repellent best.

Look out for the outstanding shower scene for Lilly Damita, and listen to the sonorous magic of Laurence Olivier's voice, both reason enough to watch this little-known piece.

At 64 minutes, the most fun you can have in an hour of black and white.

Sommarlek
(1951)

Heart-warming honesty and sweet romance mark this film.
I watched this movie and was transported, both in transports of delight, and mentally transported back to Sweden, where I had a brief but intense love-affair.

The scenes with the two young lovers, meeting and playing on the lake, with the little boat, with the dog, "Squabble", picking berries, were so finely drawn on screen, they could have been transcribed from my memories...

Cinema can be magic, and cinema like this can make one's life more wonder-filled.
