Halloween H20: 20 Years Later
(1998)

In memory of Donald Pleasance
Donald Pleasance is not in this but he will never be forgotten in his role as the great crusader against the evil Michael Myers and his other great roles. He reminds me of how Peter Cushing always was up against Dracula in those great Hammer films. He is now looking down on all this and sees that movies when good are about he best thing on this planet. And though his last role was in the fairly weak and gory Halloween 6 his role still had class.

Now with Donald Pleasance gone, in this 7th film Jamie Lee Curtis stands alone against the evil Michael Myers. I only saw the last half of this film today with commercials but it was riveting. The scene by the gate sent chills up my spine. This film is not about the why/ This film is not about gore; it is about confrontation and is one of the best Halloweens. It could easily be considered a resolution to the series in some ways but I see they have made another. This film is recommended.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers
(1995)

I wanted it to be good.
I wanted it to be good. I would say 1, 2, 4 and H20 were the best. 5 was tolerable. Donald Pleasance of course was as much a part of those films as Christopher Lee in Hammer's Dracula. This one is the 6th in the series.

Unfortunately this one dwells on gore and blood and is pretty mean. There is a lot of scene jumping and quick editing. It is more about how he kills and a lot of blood spattering and this seems like a cheap creepy film. It still maintains a little of the Halloween feel and I believe most fans really wanted to like it.

Of course, the only reason to see it is to be part of the Halloween legacy and to see Donald Pleasance last performance though his part isn't nearly as involved as before. Oh we will miss him. The next film Halloween H20 is much better made and too bad Donald wasn't there for that climatic battle in H20.

Holiday Inn
(1942)

cool
Super cast is tops. Astaire is a legend. We are watching the tape of Holiday Inn. Then we will see White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life tomorrow at a special showing. Also to clear confusion over the Jolson make up, this was actually considered a complement to African Americans at the time and was considered progressive. Just as Amos and Andy was really no different than 3 stooges. This was innocent unlike the hate filled manipulation of a Spike Lee today. this film is talent

Timeline
(2003)

almost good
Starts good. It is great to see the characters excited about history. But then it seems to shift and say history is a bad place to visit. but not completely. A telling line was when the excited historian girl said of their journey " I am more worried about being stuck living in the past then dying there." This to me was such a cynical change in her.

This movie lost its sense of adventure. the early execution was not needed. The English are portrayed as Nazis. This is probably driven by the anti tony Blair left. The movie seem to bother both cynics on the left and optimists on right. Marek is good in the film and the acting is ok, even paul walker. The catapults were interesting. Barely recommend.

Elf
(2003)

Jesus loves Santa Claus
This is an amazing movie. There is no agenda or political correctness. This is not the type of film that is preaching one way or another. It is not trying to influence kids and has no bad or negative attitude. It is not cynical.

Also it is funny. It is not gross out humor or violent humor. It is more of old fashioned humor and is not disgusting. I was very surprised. I expected some kind of agenda like the animal rights in Finding Nemo or the Native American worship in Spirit. This film is really good. It is a classic in the line of Miracle on 32nd Street and It's a Wonderful Life.

A human is raised by elfs and the real Santa. He comes to New York and his enthusiasm meets those who have lost the Christmas spirit. It reminded me a little of Bruce Almighty but this is entirely acceptable for kids and all ages loved it.

The Matrix Reloaded
(2003)

We are not that rotten in zion
We are not that bad. Yes there was some feel of the Ten Commandments at the speech by Zion. But in this film the people of Zion are not worth saving after their disgusting mush scene. The human race is not very likable as portrayed in the film which makes it very hard to want to see Zion saved.

They jump around and have a goofy love scene as preparation for the final conflict and we hardly feel like this is a noble cause. Cause to save what? Reeves is always trying to get a quick kiss thus he does not really seem like the chosen one after we see his washed out computer cafe type groupie. The weird French chic and French guy seem out of some artsy underground film.

The action though is cool. It is not the type of intensity of the individual battles of the first one. It does have a number of good action moments. Jackie Chan should have been in this in Matrix meets Chan. It is worth seeing but needed to cut some of the talk and all of the mushy parts. The philosophy and action is fine. Is choice an illusion? I say choice is not an illusion.

When Secrets Kill
(1997)

great acting
This film is theater quality. Twists and turns lead to clue after clue sort of like The Ring but not supernatural. The young daughter is very good and is not just a rebellious stereotype but actually insists on going to choir and you will see that significance. I love not this film. There are no agendas. Honor and justice and truth are all themes.

Freaky Friday
(2003)

horrible drop from original
This movie is not nice or innocent at all. The change from the original of 25 years ago to now is a loss of integrity. The scene where the audiences manipulated into laughing when the little boy has a pair of underwear pulled tightly over his face and he can't see and is having a rough time breathing is disgusting.

This is a film that makes the big sister a hero while she ridicules the little boy. The mother is unlikable with feminist lines like "you do not need a man to complete you." Sexual innuendo and an uneasy plot with the boyfriend having the hots for the mother because the girl is in her body are not enjoyable. It is all humor based on jaded sexual tension which hardly interests the very young audience and is very uncomfortable. The stereotypes of arrogant teens and purple hair and spoiled youth is all presented almost as normal. Only the band final scene playing is worthy of seeing. But all and all this film is way over rated and not in the league of the original.

The Medallion
(2003)

my teens loved it
This film is so much better than some of these reviews. No it is not brutal or gory. It is a very light film closer in tone to Tuxedo or Shanghai Knights. It is not mean spirited at all and is just fine for all ages. There is an old fashioned kiss at the end of the film no different than an old movie and is not at all explicit. There are no sex scenes and no brutality.

There is a lot of action and the movie moves very fast. Perhaps the focus on a 10 year old boy that needs to be rescued is not jaded enough for some modern movie goers. But I found a very happy audience of all ages at this film. There are two women who are also heroes in this film. But these ladies are not cold or mean talking like movies recently seem to push. They are just nice but are heroes.

The scene where one wife pulls out a secret supply of weapons is meant to be breezy and fun and not to be judged like "where did she suddenly become an agent." I really liked this film. Also, if you have ever known someone that has died this film can make you think for a moment about having a second chance at life. Also, the British side kick was funny and very likable. Nobody is put down and this is a film about heroes. This film is funny and full of action. Check out the funny out takes at the end!

Johnny English
(2003)

Great--Don't believe some of these reviewers
I was very surprised at how funny Johnny English is. This film does not sneer at secret agents. It is not really a parody. It reminds me of those "Road to" movies of Bob Hope in which comedy is weaved with intrigue. It is also like the Pink Panther series and perhaps most like Get Smart television series.

Austin Powers is totally different because Austin does not even try to be a story it is so far out. Austin is also much more a parody and is more an attack on things. Johnny English has a lot of style and actually has some very good action scenes too.

Johnny's side kick is the wise straight man here and adds stability to the film. The English girl is also very good and plays her part straight and reminds me of agent 99 in Get Smart. What helps this film is that every person acts as if this is a regular spy film and so when Johnny English does something funny it works so well.

There are many funny scenes and the audience was laughing very loudly at many scenes. Every time he tried to use his gun it fell apart. A funny scene was when he tried to give an elaborate description of the theft of the Crown Jewels. I would have given this film a 10 if it had not been for the 30 second scene in which Johnny was doused with sewage in a large pipe. Also the naked shot of a Cardinal's rear was unneeded. These gross out scenes only total about one minute of this entire movie. In general this film is not gross humor. It is just plain funny and fine for all ages. I gave it a 9. My 3 daughters loved it.

Also this film does not attack the English at all or parody them. It actually has quite a reverence for the Queen. This film is thumbs up.

Spy Kids 3: Game Over
(2003)

My kids liked it!
My daughters are aged 9, 14, and 15. They all loved it. I liked it much better than the bogus spy kid 2. That film we had to watch sheep goo on kids heads for a full hour. This film was fast paced and made more sense if you play video games. There are many references to video game levels and how much strength left. I did not care for the one chosen "guy" who was only in it for a few seconds and please drop the computer nerd stuff and the movie did not need nerds.

The 3 D was not great but probably better in digital which only a few theaters have. The terror of the Wax museum 30 years ago had much better 3 D. All in all a fun film. Ricardo Montalban still makes an impact.

Seabiscuit
(2003)

kids did not like it.
The first half of the film as slow. It also was confusing for youngsters even teens. I have read this film is for everyone but the hooker scenes and the bullfight you might want to avoid for the kids. Also he makes himself throw up and lots of swearing.

The last half of the film was much better when the horse finally entered. The first part was needed for the story but could have been cut a half hour. The final race was very crucial to the whole film. I would say this is worth seeing especially for the last half of the film. Bridges might get nominated for this role.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - The Cradle of Life
(2003)

Mean Spirited
I so looked forward to this film. I liked the first one better than most people. I thought this would be great. It started good with great scenery and powerful music. Jolie commands the screen the best of all modern actresses.

But as the film progresses we see changes to Lara. After she stabs one guy in the foot she smiles and says "nice" etc.. She is kind of sadistic and is not the hero of the first. Naturally the villain is middle aged British. But he seems no match for her so no real conflict. The worst part is bringing in a ex boyfriend making this soap opera time. The heavy graphic kissing scene is definately not for youngsters and so out of place. I thought it would pick up at the end but it ended with a dud. I am a croft fan and I wanted so much more.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
(2003)

Excellent
Do not believe negative comments on this one. This film was not politically correct and that is why some critics did not like it. The British are not portrayed as fools and there is no disdain for 19th century Britain.

Lots of good scenes and those looking for realism are in the wrong genre. This is more comic book type action. Reminds me of the old films like Journey to the Center of the earth or the Hammer films. This is not aimed at teenage computor nerds who are from sheltered suburbs looking for arrogant jokes and gore. This film requires imagination and being able to lose yourself in the film. Connery is refreshing and fine as the lead and better than Harrison Ford in my book. I am going to see it again. The Mr. Hyde take is more like the hulk than the Hulk. No heavy gore or graphic love scenes so all ages can go. Great to see some fictional famous characters thrown in and this was fun, noble and well worth it. Imagination is here.

28 Days Later...
(2002)

nasty
If you enjoy watching dead bodies in churches, watching preists as disgusting zombies, and long scenes of burning people then you might like this. Spoiler, Also our hero kills her best friend with an axe and someone says why did you do that? She says he might have been a zombie so we chopped him to ribbons. This could have been good and is no comparison to Omega Man or Last Man on Earth. We walked half way through.

Bruce Almighty
(2003)

Carrey's best
Funny but meaningful story with secret referrals to movie history. This is Frank Capra like with a very good story and not cynical. Carrey shines through out. This is great for all ages especially for believers. This film could make you one.

Carrey is himself here and you can see that the role is probably how he really acts in real life. Comic talent shines here in this funny but sincere film.

Daddy Day Care
(2003)

Great
Good film. I think it was worth seeing. Funny and not too crude. This had a good story. I saw it 3 times and the audience was laughing and very happy with this film. The kids had a glow because they were connected to this movie. This is a film critics hate and people love. Great comedies this week included Bruce Almighty and In Laws. I am tired of spoofs and crudeness. This film is just plan good. See them all because comedy is making a come back this month.

The In-Laws
(2003)

Funny and exciting
This is not a Woody Allen type film. It is not a satire or spoof. It is not a drama nor comical examination of American customs. It is not crude either although there are a few moments. It took awhile to be sure exactly where this film was going but then I loved it.

The photos do not do it justice and the only reason I went to see it was because Michael Douglas and a few of his family were in it so I was curious. It actually was a new take on weddings and made the wedding seem so much more fun than people who over plan and want weddings to be so perfect.

By mixing the world of spys with wedding reception it makes you actually want to go to the wedding. If you see the film you will understand. The raindrop song scene makes everyone kids again and makes getting married seem like the adventure it should be rather than a stuffy event that grown ups can turn them into.

This film was such a surprise. I had scene Bruce Almighty and Daddy Day Care which were both funny but not crude as comedies have recently been. (Almighty is a classic) But In Laws was really fuuny remindig me of the rare film That Man fro Rio. I could have seen a few actors playing the bride's father like Danny Devito but this worked. Douglas is as cool as ever. While obviously aimed at adults I actually went back to see this film again and brought my 8, 14,and 15 year daughters. I am sure few kids have seen this but parents perversely and regularly let kids see dark films like American Pie. My kids would never had seen In Laws but they loved it. There is nothing explicit or bad in here for kids except one kind of gross kiss but no big deal. THis film is ultimately uplifting and has a style all of its own. My kids danced in the aisle after the film was over. I have to take others of all ages to see it.

Holes
(2003)

Violence
I am surprised more people do not notice the political correctness of this story. This book was forced on my daughter in school and she was forced to spend one month on this story and write a report on every chapter.

Needless to say she has no interest in seeing the film. The real reason this film is popular with the schools and the media is probably the racially motivated violence which has been a staple of education in America since Roots. Of course it has been a dismal failure in creating an utopian society and racial tensions in America are higher than ever. Also, while 2 race one night stands may up due to carefully crafted guilt, surely weddings are not. All other ethnic groups freely marry because their history is blended and common experiences are focused on in film and education.

Holes is just another in a long line of films and philosophy that believes rage, bitterness, and guilt will lead to a happy integrated society. The acting and the camera work are not the problem. It is social engineering in films and agenda driven awards that completely take in naive parents and educators. One can only feel sorry for kids that manipulative adults run so much. Worse, is that we all live in a race and gender driven iron cage in this country when there is such a large world of ideas out there. When it comes to just plain fun, Harry Potter or Princess Diaries was much better for kids and everyone. If race must be explored there is no finer serious film ever made than the recent brilliant Bruce Willis film: Tears in the Sun which though violent should be seen by mature teenagers. But Holes is in a sense just propaganda aimed.

Tears of the Sun
(2003)

Brilliant
This is one of the greatest war movies ever made. It is better than Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor. It is not that it is an epic but it catches the best and the worst of the human race that comes out in war. Another writer says it tries to be noble. No it is noble. But tears also shows the dark side in a big way too.

It is also so timely because it relates so well to the current war in which cruel tyrants are so vicious to people like Iraqi leadership is. it has a real point but not an agenda. It is not politically correct at all which probably hurt its reviews. This is a fine film with great but hard action and brutal but it fits the story. I would like to see young people like teenagers see the film with a little of the worst violence cut out perhaps by a parent who has seen it instead of watching total garbage like American Pie or Dream Catcher. The world is not exactly as certain media and schools portray it. This film is so revealing.

It is a story of oppression from warlords in Africa and the plight of refugees and American special forces get involved to rescue a few American missionaries. (Rwanda ethnic cleansing a few years ago gives you an idea of the situation) These things are still going on in Africa and many other places like Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Middle East and Columbia. In this film decisions must be made which increase the tension of the film. The final battles are memorable. Bruce Willis is at the top of his game here. This is a great war film with a story but tight and could be a major enlightenment. 5 Stars and in top ten war films of all time.

Bringing Down the House
(2003)

Politically Correct
Awful politically correct garbage. This is churned out by left wing no war socialist Hollywood to spoiled bored brats.

The Core
(2003)

Good Movie
This is a good action science fiction film. Of course who would expect so called realism in a film like this or Time Machine or Planet of the Apes. If you are looking for slow motion vomiting or anything like that which people now call realism it is not really here.

The film calls for some imagination by the audience and dimwits who have no imagination might laugh or not like this film. The only part I did not like is the kind attitude it had toward anything government or army which is disconcerting when the army seems like such a positive thing right now on the war coverage. Also criticism of army etc. is so old and tired in movies and common.

But the film is still good although pretty grim at moments. It reminds me of Dantes Peak movie a few years ago. I also saw this film the same day as Tears in the Sun which is one of the great films of all time so that made this one seem not as good. But it is still worth a look.
