I, Robot
(2004)

God, this was BAD!!!!!
Yeah, yeah, the CGI was cool. But that was about it. AWFUL, truly AWFUL acting--Bridget Moynahan- WOW, one of the WORST screen performances I've ever seen, and Will Smith, playing his one and only note over and over again. Yeah, the robots climbing up the side of the building were cool, and the robot fight towards the end was cool, but what the hell did we have to sit through 2 hours of dreck for that?? Horrible. Just horrible. Was it populated solely by relatives and friends of the director and producers? All the $$ they have to spend on this stuff and this is the crap they come up with? What a pile of trash. I can't believe the same guy who directed Dark City came up with this.

I wonder if Isaac Azimov has stopped spinning in his grave yet.

Mona Lisa Smile
(2003)

Julia just sux
God, she's bad. Julia is such a poor actress, and it only becomes more evident when she's in an ensemble such as this. She can't hold a candle to such actresses as Ms. Gyllenhaal or one of my favorites, Marcia Gay Harden. She looked and "acted" as though she was in another movie entirely. Her limited range only served to detract from the illusion offered by other more honest performances- giving the viewer moments of "oh, it's only a movie, isn't it?", whenever she was on screen. When is the movie going public going to see through the managed and spun perception of her "talent", and stop giving her free rein to suck all the money out of Hollywood that could be going to worthwhile projects? How the hell much does she pull down for a movie these days, anyway? What a waste. She's easily the female counterpart to that other great thespian, Keanu Reeves.

Luminarias
(1999)

Good premise, BAAAADLY executed
Whew! I was looking forward to seeing this film for its (I thought) wonderfully diverse content; there are far too few films with such subject matter and cast, but YIKES!

SO poorly written, SO poorly acted!! It made me so disappointed that the writer tried to fit every stereotype she could into her dialogue, scenes that were forced to fit in all the cliches, forced to fit in contrived "confrontations" and GOD-AWFUL ACTING!!! I don't know what happened to some of these actresses, I've seen many of them in other roles, and they've been very good, but it seems as though they all sank to the level of the film.

It's too bad that this will be held up as an example of Latina filmmaking, it will probably make other producers shy away from tackling content like this in the future.

About Schmidt
(2002)

WHAT a WASTE!
What a great cast! What an opportunity to see an aging Hollywood star really act his age! What a sweet little premise! And WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!!! This film has gotten some decent, even a few glowing reviews. They must be from those who would pay to see Jack read a phone book. While I admit it would be an interesting prospect, "About Schmidt" is about as enlightening as that would be. The whole of the piece consisted of set-ups that seemed promising, only to disappoint. Jack journeys to Denver to stop his daughter's wedding- here we go-- NOPE!! Nothing remotely interesting happens. Jack meets a quirky Wisconsin couple on the road- could be interesting here- NOPE!! Kathy Bates gives Jack a percodan--here we go- NOPE AGAIN!! Kathy slips into the hot tub in the altogether-maybe something interesting could possibly happen here- SORRY!!!-- Nix, Nada, Nothing remotely interesting yet again.

I spent 20 bucks and 2 hours of my life waiting for this movie to begin-- and sadly came away with yet another Hollywood Zero. And here goes the Academy, in their infinite wisdom, giving Jack another "O" nomination- which he deserves about as much as that "As Good as it Gets" piece of crap. Just like the former, he could have pulled this off in his sleep.

Romeo Must Die
(2000)

Bad actors, bad director-what a combo!
Jet Li is an amazing fighter. And, as long as he doesn't open his mouth, he has a charismatic screen presence. But Whew! What a stinker! Isaiah Washington has done MUCH better work than his one-note ridiculously cliche character here. And Delroy Lindo, who I always enjoy, was wasted in this dreck. I won't even mention Jet, and Aliyah, double yikes! With all due respect, I know she is no longer with us, but this is just another H'wood indulgence of a popular singer who thinks she can act. What a horrible actress she was. (Sorry). But somebody had to direct those awful scenes, and somebody had to cut it, and OK those awful scenes. However many times has the R&J story been told, I don't recall when it's been given worse treatment than here.

Sweet November
(2001)

Yikes-bloody awful! Reeves strikes again
Whew! OK, so maybe KR's handlers thought this would be a good vehicle to try something other than the action thing, but yikes! When will those in H'wood wake up and realize THE GUY CAN'T ACT. Here's hoping he will stick to the mindless action fare that doesn't require much besides not getting in the way of the special effects. And Charlize? Please. Just more proof that talent is not a requirement for stardom. These two together made for one stinker of a movie.

Loving Jezebel
(1999)

How does crap like this get made?
While there is some decent acting in this trite "comedy", (unfortunately not by the lead), how completely unbelievable that these charming women would fall head over heels with such a charmless character. Confessing their innermost desires, jeopardizing their relationships, talking the way only people in the movies talk... for THIS guy? Yeccch. There was not one reason for any of it. I can't stand movies like this, where the characters' only motives for their actions is "because it's in the script." Definitely another unrequited and unbelievable adolescent male fantasy that somehow found its way to film.

The General's Daughter
(1999)

A General Disappointment
Caught the General's Daughter on cable late one night. I'd actually stayed away from the theatre by the can't-put-your-finger-on-it presumption that all of the best moments were already included in the trailer, especially Travolta's over the top clenched-teeth spitting out of his lines.

What a completely Hollywoodized waste of good talent. Leslie Stefanson is to be commended for her commitment, but the gratuitously violent rape scene, yikes! Made to appeal to the raincoat crowd, no doubt. But Tim Hutton? Madeline Stowe? Clarence Williams III? Great talent wasted in the midst of this unbelievable "thriller." Even James Cromwell seemed bitten by the Travolta chew-the-scenery bug. The plot was way overheated, and incredible leaps of faith were required to keep up. But the coup de grace for me was the number of people (INCLUDING HER FATHER!!) who would leave a naked woman staked out on the ground while carrying on philosophical discussions with her....3 out of ten, as once again Hollywood spends millions on actors and probably a buck and a half on a script.

Stir of Echoes
(1999)

Great out of the blocks, faded in the stretch
Caught "Stir" on cable tonight. It had been on my list of things to see, but I never got around to it. I was very taken in by the story and characters from the beginning, and having recently moved to LA from Chicago, it was a pleasure to see some of my old acting cronies in it. BUT, as is usually the case with good old Hollywood, there seemed to be no one with an idea of how to end it, and the obligatory gunplay at the end really clinched it for me as just another run of the mill wannabe thriller. The kudos to the actors all around, especially Kathryn Erbe and young "Jake." Kevin Bacon does yeoman work, not particularly extending himself, but he's got a high standard to uphold.

But is there no one in this town who can write an ending? And do without the completely unbelievable gun-and-fireplace poker fight scene at the end.

Five out of ten. Would get a six or seven, but penalty points for once again setting up a terrific premise and then completely disappointing.
