Oil on Water
(2007)

An embarrassment
Sadly this movie is truly atrocious. The script is appalling, with a very weak story, dragged to the bottom by poor dialogue. Unfortunately the lead actors are so poor that they cannot even make normal dialogue sound real, let alone deal with the turgid, drunken student philosophizing that constitutes a good deal of the dialogue. They look and sound like people reading lines, not actors acting. And ultimately the blame for this mess falls on the shoulders of the producer and the director. The former for failing to get a decent script and the latter for not even managing to get something believable from the actors. This movie should be shown at every film school as an example of bad writing, terrible acting and how to completely fail as a producer or director.

Barnyard
(2006)

Silly and fun
Firstly the look of the animation is a refreshing change. They have gone for a children's storybook illustration look. It is also reminiscent of plastic barnyard toys.

Secondly ignore all the reviews whining about udders and male cows. It is a children's animated movie and they're entitled to take liberties. Children often think that a cow is a type of animal, just like a sheep or goat and don't realise it refers to the female of the species. Big deal.

Finally there is some violence and death in the movie. There is nothing wrong with this and it does not make it inappropriate for young children. The violence is fairly standard harmless animated fare. And it is appropriate to expose sadness and loss. See Bambi, Lion King etc.

Overall this was lighthearted, silly and fun. There are some good laughs throughout.

X-Men: The Last Stand
(2006)

Weakest of the three
This is basically a cheap action movie. Early on it shows some promise, but this is quickly squandered. The characters are poorly developed and they spend entirely too much time on Storm. Meanwhile most of the other mutants that should have been better developed aren't even one dimensional. It is obvious they have focused on the Storm character to appease Halle Berry, who has acted like a spoiled brat over the screen time given to what is basically a sideline character in the X-Men. We're left with a pale shadow of the first two movies that rests entirely on attempting to wow us with computer graphics. It's all old hat and time to start concentrating on things like good scripts with plots, characters and decent directors. This movie has an appalling script, poor characters and almost no plot.

The Eagle Has Landed
(1976)

Good portrayal of the Germans as soldiers
Enjoyable movie with some contrived plot devices, but that's common in fiction.

I particularly liked that the German soldiers were portrayed as real people not faceless monsters, since the average German soldier was just an ordinary person with a life and family, not a deranged, homicidal fanatic. It is a common saying that people who kill each other in war could have been friends under other circumstances; particularly true when you're dealing with conscripts.

Not unexpectedly Steiner and his men choose what they consider the honourable path, they fight knowing they will die. Steiner appears as if he might have an aristocratic background and his men are completely loyal so they automatically follow him.

It is not really surprising that the Germans are quickly completely overwhelmed - they might be proficient commandos, but they are out-gunned and outnumbered. It is however a little implausible that they did not act a little more intelligently because such commandos could easily have killed quite a few more of the American soldiers before they were killed themselves.

Blow
(2001)

A sad tale
This may hint at or give away some details, read at your own risk.

It is a rather sad tale, one that once again demonstrates the utterly ludicrous sentences handed out for simply smuggling drugs. If George Jung were a rapist or even just a run-of-the-mill violent criminal he'd be back on the streets already. I was intrigued by the fact that he never committed any violent offenses or even threatened to commit violence. This certainly correlates with my perception of the man in the interviews with him on the DVD release.

Basically an enjoyable movie which is obviously too short - add another hour and this story could have been more even, more coherent. Nonetheless it kept me interested and entertained. I wouldn't buy it, but I would watch it again.

3000 Miles to Graceland
(2001)

Fun action movie with a lot of style
After hearing a lot of bad reports on this movie I was pleasantly surprised when I finally saw it. The acting is good, Kevin Costner's bad guy is great, it's well filmed with a lot of excellent cinematography, combined with absolutely perfect use of the soundtrack from minor audio cues right through to the explosions. This is not a sophisticated movie, but in its genre it is excellent.

Lake Placid
(1999)

Not great, but fun
This movie is definitely not great, it might even be considered a throw-away movie, but it was fun to watch and I'm sure will stand up to repeated viewing. The advertising didn't help its cause at all, portraying it as a horror/scary movie, it isn't it's a comedy. It's worth seeing just for the handful of very funny lines and scenes. Worth seeing at least once.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
(1997)

A new fan is born
I was and remain a fan of the movie which was silly, but really funny and has been unfairly denigrated. Perhaps it helped that I saw it with an open mind and without expectations. The series is different and is excellent in its own right. I enjoy a strong female character and Buffy certainly is that, but she is also surrounded by wonderful, interesting characters, much of the series falling outside the mould of the typical, weak American television series. So far the stories have been mostly above average with the occasional weak spot, but I love the fact that the characters develop as the series progresses while there are also ongoing stories and interactions among the characters in the background; at the very least the stories are almost always interesting. I only hope the makers know when to stop, before the series falls into the inevitable decline, but for now it continues to be better than almost anything else.
