Attack of the Show!
(2005)

It's Screen Savers "sexed-up" and dumbed down
I cannot hate on the show. When the old (and better) tech TV had to hit the bricks, the channel was reformatted and new shows stepped in. "Attack of the Show" is the replacement for the Screen Savers, with 3 co-hosts in the beginning. They were Kevin Rose, Kevin Pereira and Sarah Lane. Brendan Moran came to be something of a co-host as well, but he mostly did prerecorded pieces for the show. Kevin Rose decided to leave the show, and eventually there was a contest to see who would be the third host, but that didn't pan out for some reason.

Eventually (I just learned this from this very IMDb messageboard) Sarah Lane and Brendan Moran moved on because (hey, this is what I read) the two got married. That was a big secret to me! Now there is a new female co-host, the not-as-hot (my opinion) Olivia Munn. She's hiding something in those tops she wears, while Sarah Lane had a perfect body and she wasn't afraid to show it.

AHEM! Sorry.

"Attack of the Show" deals with everything young people want to know about. It's music, movies, comic books, the internet and television. This is what's great about the show. If you don't want to bother with scouring the net or waste time watching MTV, you can get all you want on AOTS. Some segments and bits they do are funny. They have regular guests and contributors who are in the industry, as well as guests who range from insignificant internet stars to actual big names.

Even though the hosts aren't as geek as I'd like them to be, I still have found "Attack of the Show" to be entertaining, even with its latest lineup.

Elektra
(2005)

Better than DD and Punisher
No one bit when this movie came out in theatres because Daredevil was bad enough; who would want to see the spawn of a badly made movie? But Electra is another creature on its own. It gives nods to the events in Daredevil, most notably Elektra's death, and it uses the villains called The Hand which do appear in marvel comics.

The problems with this movie are apparent in the first minutes of the movie. Uh, wasn't this the "ultimate battle of good and evil?" What you'll get in this movie is a battle between Elektra and the Hand. That's it. There are no cataclysmic events and no mega powerful beings tearing up the scenery. I am really disgusted with every movie that comes out and uses the "ultimate battle between good an evil" as a tag line. Spare me.

What they do good in this movie is give Elektra some human traits to go with her badassness. She has OCD, which is evident when she's seen washing her floor and we're told that she's always doing this. There are two more scenes where she has OCD behavior, and this was very interesting.

I also liked that Elektra's personality had changed from the Daredevil movie and in the end she somewhat returns to a more emotional person.

This movie is not trash, but some things will have your head scratching. The villains had interesting powers, but they were not interesting enough. And why did they turn to green dust? And why did one bad guy suddenly pop up from nowhere when he wasn't even in the previous scene where all the villains were plotting their attack? This is a rental at best, and the DVD was not impressive because no comic book history was implanted into it.

Unscrewed with Martin Sargent
(2003)

Or the Laura Swisher Show
Hey, I didn't get to see many episodes of this show, but from what I remember of the show was Laura Swisher.

She sat there hot as hell and she has that Aisha Tyler appeal to me- tomboyish and yet sexy.

Hopefully, she's found a new gig on TV so I can oogle her some more.

The show was pretty funny, but not the best talk show I've ever seen. If it was given more time, it would have improved on weak spots and give viewers something alternative to check out at night.

Oh, an there was this guy on there talking, too.

Now what was his name?

R.I.P. Tech TV.

The Screen Savers
(1998)

ScreenSavers, I hardly knew ye
Now that it's gone and tech TV slowly becomes MTV-ized, I miss this show more and more.

Tech TV is way, way dead.

I don't know what the hell G4 is or why we needed that merger in the first place, but it's a horrible move.

Now they have this new show on called "Attack of the Show" which is a bad imitation. It's a show that is advertised as a show that gives you the lowdon on everything going on internet-wise. It is very, very lame.

Hopefully another tech channel will rise and this one will burn in hell.

Strangers with Candy
(1999)

Mind-numbingly hilarious!
I watched a few episodes of this show when it originally aired and now Comedy Central has it in reruns. I have to say that the series was just hilarious. It had no laugh track and an uber-ridiculous concept that provokes a ton of laughs because the main character, Geri, is so old, nasty looking (thanks to great makeup on an otherwise cute-as-hell Amy Sedaris) and more experienced than her other schoolmates.

What makes it even funnier than seeing Geri go through the motions in high school as an old woman is the parody of the cheesy afterschool specials that each episode takes the form of.

This show is just damn great, and I think that it would be killer if they renewed the series and put it on before Reno 911. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Second Time Around
(2004)

Liked it more than I thought I would
Second Time around stars a real-life couple (Nicole Parker and Boris Kodjoe) playing a married-divorced-married couple who are- and here comes the wackiness- people who are exactly opposite from each other! As soon as I picked up that little Dharma and Greg plot point, I was starting to shy away from watching this show. And to top it off, I didn't think that actors I had really never seen before could be any interesting comically.

I was wrong. I enjoyed watching it and I think that it makes a good addition to the UPN lineup, which has seemed to find the right mix of shows that work well. OK, except for Eve. That show stinks.

Anyway, I think the only other feature of this show that kept me watching is Danielle Nicolet, a diminutive actress who plays the enemy/friend of the group, and the girlfriend of the male lead's character. I don't think I've seen someone that tiny on a UPN sitcom before.

Don't quote me, but I think that this show will stay on for at least two seasons.

The Punisher
(2004)

Not Punishing enough
I have now seen both the Dolph Lundgren and Thomas Jane versions of the punisher, and I have to say that as bad as it was, I still like the first version better. A couple spoilers may follow

The latest punisher let me down on a few levels. First, the death of Frank Castle's family. In the comics, only Castle's wife and child are killed by the mob, but in this version, his entire extended family is wiped out, and the only sad thing about it was that I didn't care. The scene came off as cheesy instead of sad because we don't get to know any of these people enough to care. They should have left well enough alone.

The second point is the villain. I don't think that John Travolta was mean or despicable enough as Howard Saint.

And my final point is the Punisher himself? Why wasn't he punishing enough? There are moments (especially in the final scene) where the punisher is crafty and impressive in the way he kills his victims, but there just isn't enough of that. With a name like the punisher, he really doesn't get to do as much as he should have to be impressive or badass.

That's where this movie fades and Dolph's Punisher shines. The first punisher movie had a higher body count and it was enjoyable to see The Punisher kicking ass. This movie is just a letdown, a lot less enjoyable than the trailers I saw for it.

Gargoyles
(1994)

Fantastic, if memory serves me
I just got nostalgic all of a sudden about this show, Gargoyles. From the excellently casted voices (Keith David RULES this cartoon!) to the intriguing story lines and character relationships, Gargoyles had it all. It was too bad it wasn't allowed to carry on further.

Jonathan Frakes was a great Villain, and the other baddies in the show were great as well.

Gargoyles had everything, from romance to comic relief, from magic to science fiction. Just a great Disney series. I hope it's on DVD so everyone who didn't catch it can rent it for themselves and their families.

Mortal Kombat
(1995)

Great Video Game Movie!!!!!
Laughably bad? I beg to differ. I was completely into this movie from beginning to end. I loved it in the theaters and I loved it when I saw it on cable.

Mortal Kombat is a great adaptation of the video game and the casting is just perfect. Robin Shou is the perfect Liu Kang, Linden Ashby provides great comic relief as Johnny Cage and Christopher Lambert is great comic relief as well.

I guess it's because I liked the video game that I loved seeing all of the characters being brought to life. Scorpion and Sub-zero are just badass, and Scorpion's fight scene with Johnny cage is probably the best fight in the whole movie.

I haven't seen it recently, but I know that when I saw it a decade ago, it was just great.

***.5/*****

Ken Park
(2002)

Literally not a movie for everyone
I'll spare you how incredibly shocking this movie is to watch. All I'll tell you is that this movie felt like it was shock for shock's sake instead of shock to bring a message, like "Kids" was. This is the farthest Larry Clark has gone, and there are two specific scenes that will clarify that. One involves a disturbed kid who has a weird sexual fetish and the other is the final scene involving the beautiful Tiffany Limos. She's left nothing for anyone's imagination and I'd be surprised if she can get a role in the mainstream. Too bad because she's a decent actress.

I just cant bring myself to rate this movie on a scale. Maybe you like porn that has a (highly disturbing) story attached to it. That's what this is. Basically all of it is porn, and most of it is porn that a normal person wouldn't like.

If you have kids, you'll probably turn it off within 3 minutes, because in that time, Ken Park shocks you.

So all I can say is that Larry Clark is good at what he does. But that's not saying much because I don't think there's much competition in the depraved child category.

So for it's unique genre, it gets an 8. not as "good" as Kids.

For people who think that Larry Clark has skeletons of children in his basement, it gets a 4.

Ritânâ
(2002)

This movie meets that movie and we have... Returner- BUT!
You're going to read this a lot if you read reviews for Returner, because it's true. It is derivative of Terminator, The Matrix (yes, bullet time and all that began with the Japanese, but this seems sooooo Matrix-y) and ET: The Extra Terrestrial.

However, Milly (Ann Suzuki) is very good, mixing the right amount of tomboyishness, cuteness and toughness. I say her career is promising. Takeshi Kaneshiro is a good actor, but he's actually plays sidekick to Suzuki. Goro Kishitani plays his part right as a soulless, menacing gangster. Damn, he loves to shoot people!

I say this is a good rental, but not much else. Please watch it to the end, and then formulate your opinion. The final scene was a very nice touch.

Kill Bill: Vol. 1
(2003)

More than makes up for that "Jackie Brown"
I don't know what people are talking about when they say "no plot" I mean, you have the motivation behind the entire premise, which is Uma getting vengeance over her attempted murder. She has a list of her former partners and she goes on a journey of vengeance. We even get a backstory for O-Ren Isii (which is a great mix of anime styles). The end is a great cliffhanger for Vol 2, and I'm dying to know more about how this whole gang of assassins came together.

I hear that Vol 2. is the drama to counteract this incredible bloodbath. But there is a lot of drama in this Volume. Uma Thurman's Character goes through a lot before she wakes up from her coma and seeks revenge.

How dare some of you say that this movie is bad! And how dare you say that Uma made a bad move in working with Tarantino. Have you seen Pulp Fiction? FANTASTIC! I've seen all of Tarantino's movies and if we're gonna talk about a bad movie, i'd say that Jakie Brown was the stinker, Not Kill Bill. Love the music, love the scenery, love the story. I rest my case.

Rock Me, Baby
(2003)

This show has Legs (But I won't comment on just how long)
Let's face it. UPN is officially the home of comedies that black people like to watch. Sure, you've got "Enterprise" and "The Mullets" which should appeal to a wider audience, but who the hell is watching these two shows?

Anyway, Rock me Baby has held on for a few episodes and I have to say I don't hate it on UPN. It's a nice fit into the lineup, but not as funny as "One on One" or "All of us."

It's cute, and plus the guy who played Cockroach on The Cosby Show is on it. How can you lose? As long as they don't permanently add bloated Tempestt Bledsoe to the cast. (What the hell happened to her over the years?)

True Crime: Streets of LA
(2003)

Nothing can top GTA, BUT...
Don't listen to frank gifford. I don't know who gave him a computer to use, but he's wrong.

Sure, there are games that will and have taken the GTA go anywhere, do anything gameplay and the attitude that keeps you playing, but there was so much put into True Crime that you have to applaud it. Russel Wong must have gotten a lot of cash for lending his voice to this game, because he's all over it. There are hours of his dialogue, wisecracks and his grunts and groans as his character, Nick Kang, fights. Christopher Walken is in here as well, playing the old friend of Nick Kang's father.

The major similarity to GTA is that you can do what you want when you want, and you can go on to the next mission when you feel like it. The twist is that you're a cop and if you act violently, you become a bad cop, making cops your enemy as well.

There is a large soundtrack- about 50 songs or so- that are unedited. There are also some nice cheats and options as well for replayability.

So If you're looking for a game to hold you over until the next GTA, this is definitely it.

Sound: 8/10 Graphics: 8.5/10 Gameplay: 8.0

The Missing
(2003)

I have to agree- the length ruins the movie
Ron Howard has done a great job with this movie. The casting is quite good. I don't even have to tell anyone that Tommy Lee Jones is excellent in this movie, whatever language he's speaking in.

There are violent moments, the scariest of which sets off the main plot of this movie (I won't ruin it, but it's freaky) but there is a point where Tommy Lee Jones' white Indian character finally comes face to face with the witch (who is also a great character) and THAT's when it should have ended, with the two characters finally facing off. Anything beyond that was not needed.

The final fight is in the dark, which isn't as exciting as the previous showdown in the day.

Anyway, this movie is good, and this is coming from a guy who will almost never sit down to watch a drama set further into the past than 10 years.

It's not The Searchers, but I'm somewhat glad it's not, or there would have been white people playing the Native American roles. However, if someone would ask me to label this a classic, I wouldn't.

(Or maybe I would, because anything with Clint Howard making a cameo is classic!)

The Matrix Revolutions
(2003)

I will not defend my opinion anymore
and I'd just like to say that people who enjoyed this movie shouldn't either. This movie is just so densely packed with so much that there is nothing you can do to make harsh critics see it your way. So i won't even bother writing a review.

Hey, critics were thumbing their nose at the first one! I've seen all three and I've learned ALMOST all I wanted to know about the world of the Matrix. Hopefully, there will be anime/animation or comic books made to fill in some gaps.

I will say one negative thing about this movie. It goes from 0-200 just like Reloaded went from 0-60 without apology. This movie is extremely involved graphics-wise, so people who want a majority of human elements might be turned off. It's about 60-70% CGI and 30% explanation.

I do not feel ashamed or stupid for loving this trilogy. At the very least it will spawn some really cool video games for me to play!

Bijitâ Q
(2001)

You know what?
I rented Visitor Q on DVD because I've seen Takashi Miike's name in the newspapers recently. I wanted to get a taste of what this guy was about before I saw any of his new movies. And you know what? When it comes to the criminally insane, Takashi Miike is KING!

Visitor Q is not something that i was ready for. At the very base, it is the story of a dysfunctional family trying to come together. But on the surface, I couldn't even begin to explain how INSANE this movie is.

I know I liked it because I was glued from beginning to end, and I was severely punished and rewarded at the same time.

This movie probably contains 5-10 fetishes in it, none of them which excite me in the least. However, I gathered that this movie was a huge metaphor for the need of a family to stick together and maintain closeness. Hopefully, you'll be able to hold back your vomit to discover this.

A definite 7/10

Revenge of the Cheerleaders
(1976)

It's 2003, so you should know what you're in for
I rented this on DVD because basically, it's a classic, crappy excuse to get women naked. Sometimes, I think that a mainstream movie is better than porn, and although this does have its share of nudity, the non-existence of plot is so crazy that i don't know how anyone could stand to watch it from beginning to end.

If this movie somehow brings back memories for you, then you might enjoy it, especially with the ex-cheerleader commentary.

You've had about 30 years to learn that this movie is only worth the nudity (and it's not really even worth that). I feel sorry for the people who saw this movie when it originally came out.

If you like to see 70s women naked, then this might be your thing.

At least they could have tried to have a better plot!

Kids
(1995)

At sometimes real, other times surreal. Shocking, good and plenty scary.
I don't know what to say. I have to rate this as an actual movie, because that is what it is. If it was a documentary, I'd give it a thumbs up for a great look into a world that parents are blind to. However, it's very impossible at times. These children get away with a whole lot and throughout it all, you only see 3 adults.

Could this all be happening? Maybe, but I think that Larry Clark definitely has his shock value winding through this film.

The impossible chance that your first time could end up with HIV+ consequences is real. Drug use amongst kids is definitely real. The profanity is absolutely real. If you could take video of public school kids after school, you'd vomit at the language.

But the whole world of larry clark populated by unsupervised kids? It's not totally wrong, but exaggerated. However, if you took a hundred teens and asked them about what they do behind their parent's backs, you'd get something almost as shocking as KIDS.

So if you have an OPEN mind, then you may want to watch kids. But it's a shock value movie more than a touching or sad movie. Larry Clark wants to push buttons, and he does.

The Matrix Reloaded
(2003)

A review for people who HAVEN'T seen the movie!
You have to see this movie twice. It is definitely not a perfect movie and for a cerebral sci-fi junkie (like all of the negative reviewers seem to be) it doesn't deliver 100% However, for nearly $200 million dollars, you will not be bored.

If you have any reservations about this movie, then find a matinee. Then you should either see it again, wait for dvd.

I give it 3 1/2 out of 5. I really liked this movie, if only for Neo battling the many copies of agent smith alone. A top of the line visual movie with a decent view of the future and a so-so sci fi story. It's not like a book from an award winning sci-fi author, after all.

So, I implore you to do as Morpheus says in the first movie and "see it for yourself"

How can so many people go see a movie and not agree on it? It's all up to you to discover if this movie does anything for you. I personally am going to see the final sequel and EVERYONE, whether they loved or hated it, will see revolutions, whether it's on DVD or video or **shhh** through P2P.

GO SEE IT!

Go
(1999)

Surprisingly, I enjoyed it
Go was much better than I expected it to be. It's a good teen/slightly dark comedy.

I'll save you the plot synopsis, But basically it's a set of stories taken from the perspective of a few central characters which all come together to a conclusion.

There's a bit of violence, nudity and a lot of running around.

My favorite arc of the story are the two gay actors who get involved with a cop who get stranger as the day goes along.

Someone convince me that Jay Mohr isn't gay. I am sure of it, even though he's married.

All of the actors in GO do their parts well and if you happen to decide to rent this movie, you won't be disappointed.

Teenage Caveman
(2002)

There is something to love about it...
and it's only the nudity. Otherwise, it's a very, very, very, very cheesy post apocalyptic "horror" flick. The actors are annoying and the nudity is the only thing that might keep you from smashing the DVD to pieces. So if you like really cheesy, cheap cinemax style movies, then you'll enjoy this.

I give it a 4/10, which, again, is for the nudity.

Kidô butoden ji Gandamu
(1994)

Fun, but extremely over the top
If you have seen this in its original Japanese version or in English on channels like Cartoon Network, then you know what I'm talking about.

The premise for G-Gundam is "warriors around the world fight in the name of their Country and the final one standing rules the universe" or something like that.

It starts out great. Domoun Kashu is the protagonist and he kicks ass in his Shining Gundam. But after the first encounter with one of the chief villains, things get ridiculous.

People who were defeated come back. Gundams that were destroyed are new again. Gundams throw huge blasts of energy like Ken and Ryu from street fighter. Any unimaginable plot twist you can think of is in here.

That doesn't mean it's bad, but if you like more realistic action, watch any of the other gundam series.

The best thing about G-gundam is the way the gundams are piloted- every action that the Gundam does comes directly from the pilot's movements. That piloting system makes a lot more sense than pressing buttons and pulling levers.

I give G-gundam 6.5/10

Dragon Ball Z: Doragon bôru zetto
(1989)

Listen up...
Dragonball Z is not anything like Dragonball. If you want a faster paced story, then Dragonball is for you.

If you can sit through villain after villain and ass-whipping after ass-whipping, all with supernatural powers, than you should watch Dragonball Z.

A lot of hardcore anime fans diss Dragonball Z because it's so simple and there is hardly any plot after the Saiya-jin Saga.

But on weekdays, when you need something fun to watch, then it's a great show. If you're into martial arts as well, then you will admire some of the hand to hand combat.

I applaud Dragonball because it was (and still is) a gateway into the world of anime for newbies who haven't seen much anime in their life.

I give DBZ 8/10

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
(2002)

Could have been more dark and violent
I liked AOTC, but I didn't love it. I think that in the beginning, Hayden Christensen was forced to have an "I was in the play othello in high school" accent, but when he dropped it later on and got to work, I more than forgave him.

What I wanted in this movie were two things:

1) a couple more laughs

and

2) more evil.

I think that the only times I actually laughed were when Jango says to Obi-wan "I'm just a simple man trying to make his way in the universe" and when 3po and r2-d2 were on screen. i'm dying for some han solo style one-liners or some light humor thrown in.

My number 2 gripe is the violence. There is the Revenge on Tatooine (that's what I call it) scene and I feel it could have been more violent and evil. It is the definitive scene for the anger phase of Anakin's fall to the dark side and we need to feel the evil, not just hear about it.

I feel that George Lucas should forget the kids for once and give us an R rated Star Wars. Come on, Lucas!

Beyond that, I enjoyed this movie a million times more than TPM, but Dooku vs. Anakin didn't excite me as much as Qui-gon vs Maul vs. Obi-Wan. I even liked Jar-jar. Can you believe that! He didn't do anything goofy or stupid, and I almost forgot he was in it!

I give this an 8 on a 10 scale. rent it on video- no DVD- when it comes out!

I say that Episode III will be the best of this trilogy. You just wait and see.
