My Own Country
(1998)

Uniquely and A Sad Commentary on AIDS in the 80s
I won't summarize the plot, that's been done in other reviews. What is fascinating about the movie is its unique way of filming, the characters that touch one's heart and the choice of people who are in the movie. The setting is removed from the typical AIDS movie set in an urban center, which makes it even more compelling and then you add an Indian doctor who has probably faced prejudice in this country and it's a powerful statement. The 80s were a holocaust for persons with AIDS. No money was available for very much at the time in rural areas. The actor who played the doctor was a remarkable testament to what medicine is about: pain when you can't help someone get well, troubles at home; raw emotions; I would recommend this movie for anyone to begin to understand what having AIDS in the 80s in a rural area was like. Even the smalltown gay bar is/was typical of what the gay bars are like in small towns. Tears roll if you really get engaged with the movie!! If you don't, then you probably don't connect with the issues presented. Another masterful showpiece from Showtime...another perspective from Showtime who also did "Behind the Red Door" this year!! BRAVO!!!

Behind the Red Door
(2003)

Exquisite Acting Masterpiece
I watched this movie and was highly impressed with Keifer Sutherland and Kyra Sedgwick's acting!! A deeply emotional movie with meaning for the title! Nice filming of how the actors (Keifer and Kyra) reflect back on the past...haunting at times. Another wonderful film by Showtime. More than just about being gay and AIDS...about a brother and sister's relationship...changing from a love-hate relationship to a loving one as the main character with health problems leaves this Earth. Stockard Channing, as an agent for both Kyra and Keifer, is so, so...but Keifer and Kyra are what make the movie a classic. Their acting and the dynamics are fascinating. Keifer Sutherland plays a gay man with AIDS on medication, who is an ad executive. Kyra Sedgwick plays a "straight" photographer who doesn't show her gift of photography, but gets an assignment through her agent that ends up being for her brother. After they meet again, does she go home leaving him? Watch the movie and see!! AAA+++ for this movie. It is striking in its interspersement of the past and present, the use of emotions, the acting of Keifer and Kyra and the beauty of the setting that it was filmed in (a European country). The house that the main character lives in is beautiful along with the outdoor scenery. This is a movie about love and deeply held emotions and a relative who cares.

Floating
(1997)

Spectacular, Yet Needs More!
The movie was a creative plot. However, the plot could have been developed more with the two main characters sharing about their reactions to their fathers and Chad Lowe's character's being gay. The strength of the movie was that it was innovative. Wish I could rewrite it and remake it. I would encourage anyone with an eclectic, esoteric and creative mind to see it. It's a must see!! I rated it 10!!!

Holiday Heart
(2000)

Fabulous; Great Plot; Must See Film;
This is probably one of my Top Ten of movies that one must see for the realistic plot and the plot formation. There was more creative thought into the plot and dynamics between the characters and this is not your "normal" movie, however, it shows a paradox between being a drag queen and also being a Christian, which is cool. It's heart warming, yet realistic in a world that values quick answers and easy solutions. It offers hope and reality. The lines are well written. The music is great. The actors and actresses are well chosen. Top notch film.
