The Penguin
(2024)

Celebrating sociopathy!
Let's encourage and celebrate sociopathy! Yey! All you have to do is kill everyone who loves you and throw the innocent to the wolves who, if dare complain for being mistreated, are sent back to be tortured and punished! I think that message was successfully transmitted because look who won the election!

Also, to all the kids who are looking for role models - look no further; Penguin is your man! Whoever manages to achieve the most atrocities becomes the boss so go get yourselves some guns and let's start killing! Woohoo!

Who needs girlfriends and families when you have death and destruction by your side? Isn't this what we all need right now because there is definitely not enough out there, right?

They could have done so much with the story and instead they chose to reward sociopaths...what a waste...

disappointing
The title of this should have been "the love life of thieves!" - very disappointing, messed up and very far away in format from the original as the priority here was to find the right love match for each of the participants! Unnecessarily melodramatic to the point I had to fast forward most bits to get back to the story.

Also parts were too far fetched and lacking detail, like for instance they were all super meticulous about not leaving forensic signs anywhere, and yet they lost a necklace and a bike?! Come on! This was a parody - not a serious heist story, all any of them cared about was their feelings. And how is it possible that people who live a life of pure excess, indulgence and zero exercise can cycle on the mountains for days?!

What about the women investigators who look older here even though this period precedes money heist - did they run out of actors??

Fun to watch, funny at times, and even moderately suspenseful, offering a bit of the feeling of the original, but overall not nearly close to the brilliance of the money heist script.

dopesick is better
This story has already been dramatised by hulu in dopesick so redoing the exact same thing, when the first time it was done so immaculately, is bound to not go that well...this is a much more superficial version in the sense that it is created with a more entertaining aspect than adherence to the actual truth and it is also squeezed in only 6 episodes when there is so much more to cover. It is an ok show, with few good performances, like Richard Sackler's role, but only because the story behind it is so fascinating, otherwise there is nothing great to hold the viewer. It is like when Jennifer Lawrence was booked to play Elizabeth Holmes in the film Bad Blood but after seeing The Dropout and Amanda Seyfried's performance, she said "what's the point in redoing something that has been done so well?" and quit...So if you want the best version of this story, check out Dopesick.

Law & Order

One of TV's greatest show ruined...
This has been a legendary show, one of television's greatest and one of my top favorites ever, portraying a raw and rugged NYC with all the shortcomings of a underfunded police department and tricky legal system, great performances, moral dilemmas, unpredictable and smart scripts and visceral characters and actors made from their roles in it. It is a real shame to see its current overstylized condition, with the production investing in beautified characters and elementary dialogues, highly predictable narrative, flat and suspense-free content and bad acting instead of keeping the original flowy feel...it just feels so fake and stuck up and if Waterston wasn't in it, it would be unwatchable...i guess it reflects the state of the city as a whole and its gentrified demise, but they could at least make it more believable...real shame.

Les Gouttes de Dieu

finally something original!!!
In an ocean of overdone cartoons, vacuous gore, CGI, true stories and star wars-type productions, here we have a unique fictional story with an original plot, spanning across geographical boundaries and time periods, deeply human, with whatever darkness or light that carries along, beautiful photography, attention to detail in the production and complex characters who slowly unfold through an intricately unpredictable and quite addictive narrative full of twists about a side of the wine industry few are familiar with. Contemporary, smart, entertaining and just beautiful to watch...A true breath of fresh air.

Doctor Foster
(2015)

NOT a thriller
This should be called "the power of weakness" or "a pity party" or "how to let weakness ruin your life" but definitely not a thriller! No message there whatsoever other than a lecture on how to be miserable. Repetitive, exhausting and embarrassing it has a few good spots, with minimal to no suspense but mainly tiring and dragging. They could have told everything in 6 episodes rather than 10! Pointless and running in circles with mediocre performances, especially of the teenagers. The same thing is basically happening over and over again throughout making it predictable and without excitement except from one episode...not worth it.

The Gilded Age
(2022)

Good old New York...
...as we know it today! It seems nothing has changed except it was honest, raw and direct back then!

The lavishness is reminiscent of France as is the weather! New York climate is notoriously extreme - if they could at least have included one day of cold weather perhaps, it would be more realistic and not feel like a set! But despite that, brilliant to watch regardless...

too much on the dark side
If feel good movies are too much on the good side of fiction then this is definitely too much on the dark side - a little less and perhaps it could even feel realistic. And what's with this monica character giving women a bad name - it's bad enough that good men are hard to find, she finds one willing to die for her and plays hard to get, letting pride destroy her family? I mean really...

A Discovery of Witches
(2018)

EPIC
They just don't make fiction like this any more - quite outstanding in every aspect and am not even a vampire genre fan, or any type of supernatural genre fan but this...it's so contemporary yet historic, fictional yet feels truthful, with truly awesome cast and a story with something for everyone that keeps on giving. Hands down one of the best shows in a very long time... Congratulations!

Tell Me Your Secrets
(2021)

unfinished
Good and entertaining, suspenseful and at times unpredictable also, but slow and leaving out important bits of the plot they so carefully and slowly built. It could have been a faster build up and faster unfolding so everything got covered in one season but there are a lot of question marks left in the end which begs the question if there will be a second season...

If there is another season, they have left a good amount of material to pick it up with...

Merlin
(2008)

disheartening
Fun to watch series where you definitely get attached to the characters, and can't help but notice the obvious inconsistencies like, for instance Dobermanns were bred centuries later, and being fat was a sign of health and prosperity rather than shame and offence during those times, amongst tons of other flaws, which give me the impression that the show was targeted to the young teenager audience rather than to adults. Consequently the prevalent notions of deceit, betrayal, secrecy and overwhelmingly exhausting stupidity that dominate throughout, even though they are undoubtably an education on the ground values by which today's society operates on, i am not so sure they would be the most inspiring principles by which to create a series directed at that young age, no...? Because what is the point of creating a world of make-believe and fantasy with kingdoms, dragons, fairies and magic only to have it resemble a worst version of our everyday - if we cant use fiction to escape then what's the point...?

Jessica Jones
(2015)

wrong title
This series is supposed to be about a retired superhero but it is actually about her nemesis so it should be called Getting Kilgrave rather than jessica jones...really...the entire show, including her life, actions, identity, motivation, work, do not portray jessica jones but rather the chase to get Kilgrave which is disappointing as if we had to chance to watch her unfold and shine, it would have been more enjoyable...it's almost as the viewer is not allowed to enjoy but rather maintain a constant frustration

The Widow
(2019)

Good thriller!
Good story with interesting and unpredictable twists, well made, good casting, intriguing and dense plot with diverse parameters. Fun to watch and quite revealing of the local climate. A different leading lady would have been a better choice, one who can actually have facial expressions so can reflect the depth of the character's nuances better...

Law & Order True Crime
(2017)

Talk about judicial misconduct!
Good court drama, but not of the same calibre as the series, as the level of litigation in the court, including closing statements (like asking the jury to acquit in order to please the defence attorney is ridiculous), is mediocre at best.

As for the actual story, am not sure what is based on fact and what isn't, but it is just unfortunate that this crime took place parallel to other high profile cases and therefore a lot of its handling did not happen in the name of truth and justice, but rather to score points for the losing side, to finally manage to convict someone, regardless of who and why, to balance for all the previous acquittals of high profile cases - they messed up with OJ so they had to find an escape goat to show that the system works. This is a standard case of politics getting in the way of justice and what is also appalling how judges can get away with bias, even in such a heavily publicised trial...

Marcella

What police?
This show had a good base and foundation on which to build a solid story, and it is packed with suspense and fun to watch, but it leaves unfinished points, confuses for the sake of confusion without offering explanation or resolution on some of them, ever, and ends in a ludicrous manner. The second season leads to a potential third season which suggests would be about something completely different in nature as if almost we go from a mystery crime drama to a superhero/action series!

And my favourite part is the incompetency of the so called police: apart from the basic lack of detective work where they are supposed to try to find links between the victims, and they only start doing that in the second season while going through an entire first season by waiting for crimes to happen in order to acquire clues, they also don't carry any weapons (!) but rather barge into ongoing crime scenes and chase criminals unarmed!!! Wtf? So if the writers couldn't figure out the basics, couldn't the consultant help them to at least get the basics right? I mean in what universe doesn't a cop carry a gun?
