Ah-ga-ssi
(2016)

Twists within twists
This was such a fun watch. I mean, don't get me wrong, it has its fair share of violence but the plot is good. A conman conspires separately with two women for his own benefit and in the end, he gets nothing while the two women get everything he wanted, as well as each other. We love to see it! There is something so satisfying about seeing the two main male characters meet such pathetic ends, as they deserved.

The cinematography and music used were beautiful but of course the main draw to this movie is the relationships between the characters. Each character has their own motives and from there, the hidden agendas arise and take life. I can see why this is such a highly praised and recommended movie.

Single in Seoul
(2023)

Sweet slow burn
The leads had good chemistry and I liked how their relationship developed. It wasn't anything extraordinary but there was a sweetness to it and their interactions. As the movie progressed, you could see them start caring for each other in small ways. They were two single people who found love in each other.

I thought that because they had started off on the wrong foot that they would constantly butt heads in the movie, but this time around the writers were all about mature characters, so although they did misunderstand each other at first, they were able to resolve it and work together. There were short bursts of humour sprinkled throughout the movie so overall it was quite heartwarming in the end.

Purple Hearts
(2022)

Could've done without the war propaganda
Not gonna lie, the start of the movie was kind of cringey due to the pro-war propaganda and just how American it is. I know it sounds absurd because it IS an American film with a Marine as the main character too, but I believe that they could've written the first 20-30 minutes of the movie differently and still have gotten the happy ending. Luke and Cassie have great chemistry honestly and I liked how their relationship developed. I also liked the friendship they had with Frankie and I don't know why they had to kill him off. They could've left his character alone because it wouldn't have affected the state of Luke's injury but of course they had to do something for the shock 😒

Don't Worry Darling
(2022)

Nothing is as it seems
I went in watching this with no prior knowledge about the plot so I was confused for the first 30 minutes before I realised that 'Oh, this is a thriller of some kind'. Florence Pugh is obviously the strongest actor in this movie, as be protagonist. When the conspiracy was revealed towards the end of the movie, I was surprised and saddened for several reasons. Even after everything Jack had done to Alice in the name of love, Alice still loved him. But in the end, she chose to leave him behind. And to think that most of the women in that town had their lives taken away from them without their knowledge, their autonomy completely stripped, because their husbands were greedy and selfish. They wanted the perfect life, their wives waiting upon them day and night. And with Victory, their wishes were fulfilled.

The ending was left up to the viewer to interpret but I think that it was leading us to believe the women would eventually band together and leave the made up world eventually, with or without their husbands. They would take their power back.

Mignon
(2023)

Gorgeous
I finally found the time to watch this after seeing clips of it online and it was good. The art style and colours are so beautiful and I liked the pacing of the story. It was only 12 episodes long and each episode was about 5 minutes (I wish we had more episodes that were longer) but the storyline wasn't rushed and the build up of Mignon and the Doctor's relationship was written well. Mignon is absolutely smitten with the Doctor and he would do anything for him. Luckily the Doctor genuinely cared for him too. Mignon's character design is top tier: he looks good both with silver hair and with darker hair, and it was cool how his temperament changed with his hair colour.

Godzilla vs. Kong
(2021)

Real vs Real
This is the case of real recognising real. Honestly the plot kind of lost me a bit. I feel like maybe the writer had the final fight scene in mind and wrote the entire movie just for that. Godzilla and Kong are natural enemies but they teamed up for a short while just to defeat the common enemy, that mechagodzilla. The whole thing about the mechagodzilla made me laugh a little because the guy was saying it so that men would be the apex predator or something like that? Besides, the characters overall were quite weak, obviously the story revolved mainly about the two titans. Other than that, the last scene of Godzilla walking away from Kong was pretty touching but also kind of funny in a way.

Gyeongseong Keuricheo
(2023)

Good, except the ending left me confused
It's quite well known that the Japanese experimented on humans in the past but it's not common for movies and shows to focus on this aspect, as far as I know. I think the writers did a good job with this show. I liked the complexity of the characters and the pacing of the storyline. There were some plot holes for sure but nothing too major that impacted my experience watching this.

The romance between the main characters was okay but I wasn't expecting HSH's character to die just when they were so close to escaping. It was a tragic ending for the 2 characters that had come to have feelings for each other and they definitely deserved better. I had already accepted HSH's character's death by then so that ending with PSJ's character in the modern world and HSH's character being invaded by that Najin creature just confused the heck out of me. I know there's going to be a Season 2 but I don't know what it's going to entail.

Wo de ma ji 4 ge gui
(2023)

So touching
I had been waiting for this to be released on Netflix and it didn't disappoint at all. I know that this movie is a remake but in my case I have not watched it before so I didn't know what to expect. It was humorous and filled with silly moments between the protagonist and the ghosts. The romance between the protagonist and the love interest was just meh, so don't go into this expecting a really good romance subplot. The main plot revolved around the protagonist's relationship with the ghosts and his mortality, and honestly I think it was done in a way that kept things lighthearted. Although that reveal in the end did make me tear up, not gonna lie.

I binge watched this
I'm so glad I was recommended this because I really enjoyed it. Honestly I wasn't expecting much because South Korea isn't known for its superhero shows and movies. However the plot for Moving is solid, so is the writing for its characters and the special effects are good too. The internal and foreign conflicts that are the basis for Moving's plot are well written and well paced, and there is more to explore with how episode 20 ended.

I also liked that this show was just as much about the children as it is about the adults. Viewers got to learn about their past and how everything led to the current time. Not only that, there's an emphasis on familial ties and how strongly one is influenced by them, and I think the writers did a great job on it. I was pleasantly surprised by the characterisation of the North Korean characters. I think the North Korean army tends to be portrayed as a group of unfeeling robots but the ones in Moving were portrayed as normal people with their own beliefs and feelings.

The ending where Jang Juwon and the North Korean with his same abilities were working together at his fried chicken shop made me happy to be honest. And that scene where the North Korean who could fly like Kim Doosik, killed his own general and decided to release KDS also made me cheer out loud. So yes, I liked the ending and I'll be looking forward to S2.

Dokjeon
(2018)

I knew it
The first half of the movie was fast paced and intense, and I enjoyed it a lot more than the second half. The villains were kind of mediocre in the sense that they didn't feel fully fleshed out. The bad guys were like bad guys just for the sake of being the bad guys, if you know what I mean.

I think it was intriguing how the plot revolved around Lee, this drug mastermind whose identity was completely unknown to everyone but honestly I figured it out pretty early on. And when it was finally revealed in the end, I was like okay? But I still don't understand his motives. That ending though.. I know there's a sequel and I'm pretty sure Lee died in the end of this movie so I'm confused why there was a need for a sequel at all? I might consider watching the sequel just for Han Hyo Joo though.

The Good Nurse
(2022)

A good thriller
The fact that this movie is based on true events is chilling. Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastaine delivered amazing acting in this movie and while watching, I was reminded that you don't truly know someone at all until you do. In this case, the hospitals the murderer worked at were to be blamed as well for caring more about their reputations than their patients. If only they had taken action, all those murders could have been put to a stop much much earlier. Kudos to the detectives and Nurse Loughren for doing whatever was necessary to put this murderer behind bars.

The pacing of the movie was good and the use of the background music really heightened the mood of the movie. The colour grading was a bit too dark for my liking though it fit the overall tone of the movie.

Pain Hustlers
(2023)

Emily Blunt is amazing
Why aren't we allowed to give half star ratings? I'm actually rating this movie 6.5 stars but I'm rounding it down to 6.

Emily Blunt carried this movie, in my opinion. She was amazing and I'm reminded once again that her American accent is impeccable. Chris Evans held his own as well and he had pretty good chemistry with Blunt which I wasn't expecting but still appreciated nonetheless.

I know it's based on true events so I won't say much about the plot except that it was a riveting movie. I cheered for Liza (Blunt's character) and rooted for her success. It was fortunate that she still had a conscience in the end and didn't let greed cloud her judgement. Watching this movie also opened my eyes to how apathetic the pharma industry can be to the suffering of the general public as long as they're making a profit.

Zui hou zhen xiang
(2022)

Superb acting but...
The two main characters are played by two amazing actors but even their performance couldn't completely save this movie with its subpar writing. The plot definitely had something but I think the writers were trying too hard to make it into something it wasn't and couldn't be. The climax and the "plot twist" were rather anticlimactic and didn't leave me with its intended impact. The ending felt a little rushed, but then again the list of witnesses and suspects was short to begin with. However I did like the colour grading of the movie and that scene where Zhang Zheng-yi kind of lost it in the bathroom was really good.

Destined with You
(2023)

Started out weak but...
The beginning of this wasn't too bad but the first few episodes were so unserious that I seriously considered just dropping it. (Yes, even Rowoon's pretty face could not keep me). But I guess I'm glad I gave this K-drama a chance because the plot eventually made more sense and progressed nicely albeit a little slowly. But still, the plot was weaker than I thought it would be.

I liked the character development and the ending because every character got what they deserved. However, the chemistry between the ML and FL was.. lacking. They were a cute couple on screen for sure but I sometimes found myself not really caring about their relationship. But I am relieved that even though it seemed like there would be a love triangle, none of that BS actually happened.

Quite emotional
The SARS outbreak happened 20 years ago and it was similar to COVID in that it happened suddenly and was highly infectious. This movie will probably remind people of how it was when the COVID pandemic just started. Everything was chaotic and the medical field had the most responsibility, this people who worked in hospitals especially had the most difficult time.

This movie had some emotional scenes which nearly brought me to tears. I think the cast did an excellent job and it showed the different sides of medical professionals. I liked the pacing too and honestly the ending didn't disappoint me. Instead I was relieved that it was somewhat of an open ending.

Amazing cast
I was absolutely blown away by the amazing cast, especially the antagonists. I know the main character is Moon Dong-eun but Park Ji-yeon excels at being the villain and stealing the spotlight. The writing was solid but there were some minor things that I didn't understand towards the end. However they were so minor that they didn't impact my experience watching this show.

The progression of the plot and Moon Dong-eun's revenge coming into place was so satisfying to watch. Everyone who had wronged her had met an ending that they deserved. But what I liked about this is that the protagonist didn't always win on her path to revenge. She got some hits from the antagonists too. Her romance with Yeo-jeong was okay, it was unorthodox by typical K-drama standards but it worked for them. Will there be a season 2? Because I will be tuning in for that!

Be My Favorite
(2023)

Good and touching
I found out about this show on twitter and I'm so glad I decided to watch it. At first it was just fun and games because Kawi kept trying to "fix" his relationship with Pear but it just never turned out the way he wanted it to. But as the plot progressed, so did the character development and the relationship between the characters. I loved how Kawi's friendship with Pear (and Max) turned out in the end. And I also really liked the tender and vulnerable moments each main character shared with their parents. Honestly I cried at those parts because their parents were so understanding and supportive of them. There was no judgement and the characters were allowed to feel what they were feeling without any guilt. But of course, those were all supporting the main event which was the relationship between Kawi and Pisaeng.

I freaking love Pisaeng. He's like the perfect guy and boyfriend and I got kind of annoyed because Kawi was so indecisive and unsure of himself and his feelings for Pisaeng. It's so easy for me to judge Kawi but how he felt and acted were justified because he had always believed himself to be straight. So the sprinkle of angst was unavoidable but it made them getting together that much sweeter. Kawi's character growth was immense and he's a completely different person at the end compared to the 1st episode which is a good thing. The happy ending was good too.

Touching & hilarious
I was a little excited for this because Park Seo Jun and IU are in it, and they're a duo I didn't know I wanted to see work together until they did. I enjoyed their relationship dynamic in the movie and I'm actually so glad that the writers didn't write up a romance between them as a sub-plot because that would've cheapened the movie honestly. The overall plot was alright and while I think it could've been executed better, the different relationships between the characters of various backgrounds and how they finally came together to work as one, was the main goal of this movie. In that sense, they captured the essence of football and teamwork. They also made a hilarious bunch and the ending was really touching. They didn't win of course, but it was their collective spirit that shone through.

Well, they tried
This was not what I expected. First of all, the world building was weak and although I knew it was a dystopian setting, it felt like a combination of different things that just didn't work. The plot was barely there too and even then there were plot holes scattered around. The characters felt one dimensional as well and I feel so bad saying this because I really like Kim Woo Bin but this drama didn't do him much good in terms of showing off his acting skills. The fight scenes were pretty good though and the CGI wasn't bad but it wasn't the best of course. Overall, this is a drama that suffers from poor writing and it's unfortunate because it does have the potential to be a good and memorable show. Instead, it just falls flat.

Very entertaining
I think this is the first time I'm watching something in the transmigration genre instead of reading it and I enjoyed every second of it. It was ridiculous and funny, but it was also serious and touching at times. It took some time to build up the characters but honestly the cast was incredible - everyone was amazing and I was constantly impressed by their acting skills. I think the writers really nailed the Queen's characterisation but more importantly, the actress who played her was amazing at bringing out the multiple facets of the character.

I also liked the progression of the Queen and King's relationship and how it moved the plot along. The supporting characters were great too and I especially liked the humour the royal cook and lady-in-waiting Choi brought to the show.

My only gripe with the show is its ending. The Queen and King had cultivated their feelings properly by then so they were very natural with expressing their love for each other. Imagine my surprise when the original soul repossessed her body and the transmigrator returned to his original body and world 200 years in the future. Not gonna lie, I was totally expecting the transmigrator to live out the rest of his days in the Queen's body, by the King's side. Therefore the ending was a bit of a disappointment to me even though it made the most sense.

Im Westen nichts Neues
(2022)

A good anti-war movie
If a piece of media is centered around war, I would rather it be an anti-war, and All Quiet On The Western Front is precisely that kind of movie. I have not read the novel this movie was adapted from but this movie showed the absolute violence of war and how there are simply no winners. The cast was brilliant but in particular, I have to applaud the person who plays Paul, one of the main characters of the movie. He's truly a standout. I think the pacing was great too and the cinematography was, for a lack of a better word, beautiful. I also thought that the use of sound in the movie really helped to intensify the tone of certain scenes.

That ending though.. I should have seen it coming is all I'm saying. I wasn't expecting a happy ending because there is no such thing when a war is involved, but still, I wanted a better ending than what we got, although I acknowledge that it was probably the best ending. Any other ending would've cheapened the movie and its message.

Chainsaw Man
(2022)

Top tier
I have been looking forward to this anime for the longest time and I am glad to report that it exceeded my expectations. I've read the manga so I know what the story is about and how the plot goes, and I appreciate the source material but the anime was definitely more entertaining than the manga. The visuals and animation are amazing and it's clear that the team that worked on it put in their blood, sweat and tears into it. The fight scenes especially were a delight to watch. I also really liked the VAs chosen for the characters because I thought they were perfect for them. The music used was great too and they enhanced the mood in the anime. I'm excited to watch S2!

Puss in Boots
(2011)

Funny
Rewatching this movie as an adult made me realise that although this is an animation, it is not a movie made for kids. I finally understood all the jokes that had gone over my head as a child and I can better appreciate the movie's humour now. This was such a hilarious movie in how absurd it was. There were times where I just burst out laughing because of how silly a scene was. In terms of the actual plot however, it was a twist on children's fairy tales. But this means that one would need prior knowledge about these fairy tales to understand the storyline of the movie, otherwise I reckon that it would be a pretty confusing or boring movie.

Fa yeung nin wah
(2000)

Beautiful
It is a gorgeous movie, a masterclass in cinematic colour grading. Everything was so harmonious and it made for such a pleasant watching experience. The reds and greens, the use of mirrors and the quietness of the movie. The development of relationship between the two neighbours are shown artfully through their regular interactions. They were only pretending at first, acting out how their spouses ended up having an affair with each other. A complicated relationship, a friendship borne out of loneliness, a love that went nowhere. But while I was watching, I kept thinking about where their spouses were - they just disappeared from the storyline with no mention of what happened to them. And that ending was so confusing to me. He was in Singapore then in Cambodia but why was he in Cambodia? I had no idea.

The Menu
(2022)

It's interesting
I thought it would have a similar concept to some other movies that I've watched but this movie's an interesting concept. Thankfully even though it is a little violent, it's not gory and it's a tasteful movie overall (yes, pun intended). The plot is there for sure but the chef's true motive doesn't get revealed until later in the movie, after some things have happened. But the way the movie is written left me feeling quite unsatisfied at the end, and I had a few unanswered questions because some scenes felt so random to me, like they were added in just to add a shock factor. I really enjoyed the total shift in tone when Margot made a completely unexpected request of the chef towards the ending of the movie. It was great because it really showed the brilliance of Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes, in their minute expressions, their small happiness and utter relief. The rest of the cast was great too, especially Nicholas Hoult - his character was such an asshole.
