Velma
(2023)

Clearly picked the wrong IP
I'm up to episode 6 now and I don't hate this show. I think some humor lands, some doesn't, and a lot of it is crude. However there is enough narrative to keep me watching new episodes. There are attempts at character development after the first episode which many people say they did not continue past.

I can see that piggybacking off the success of a children's show and showing us "unlikeable" teenagers that visually resemble the old characters we know has backfired. This isn't a 1 star show but the creators obviously hoped the nostalgia of the franchise would attract viewers and that's where they messed up. This show wouldn't have such a low opinion if the characters had nothing to do with Scooby Doo, but maybe also wouldn't have garnered the viewership to gain so much hatred? Who can say, too late now. Probably won't see another season after this backlash.

The Patient
(2022)

Solid
I'll start by saying I watched this series after it was all released, so the length of the episodes seems irrelevant.

The protagonists are so well played, I couldn't look away whenever they were on screen. I will admit some of the side stories started to lose me but they ultimately paid off by laying groundwork for greater emotional moments later on.

As far as the ending, I can't see a more realistic conclusion given what you learn about the characters' personalities. It might not be the ending you want, but it's an ending that makes sense and is poignant in a way obviously many people will find dissatisfying.

Star Trek: Lower Decks
(2020)

Star Trek in a different light
I'm a fan of all the Star Trek TV series and movies from The Original Series through all the new CBS shows. Watching The Lower Decks it's obvious that the writers know Star Trek and are attempting to craft a show from material they love. There's a continuous stream of in-jokes for Trek fans. The whole show is a nod towards tropes that Star Trek embraces throughout its numerous manifestations.

For anyone who has actually watched Star Trek, you should know that it didn't always take itself seriously. It likes to have fun sometimes. It wasn't always the same drivel each and every episode and that's part of what made it such a joy to watch and a universe that surpasses so many others. The Lower Decks is not groundbreaking, it is not like any other thing with Star Trek in its name, but when I'm watching it I can tell that it is exactly what it's trying to be.

I can't say it's a 10 star show, but it's certainly not a 1 star show. Any time someone tries to create from an established entity, you get all these fans who think they have some kind of creative control over the entity. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but frankly I don't trust the ratings anymore because of cases like this.

Cursed
(2020)

A mish mash
This show is obviously not trying to be one thing, or retell a story you know. It is trying to invent something new and create its own universe, albeit derived from existing material. I guess they made a mistake by borrowing familiar names. If everyone had been called something different I don't see how most of these negative reviews would be valid. I think it's good enough to keep watching, though it didn't hook me at first. If you go in with an open mindset and remember the show is trying to be playful with its namesakes and not butcher them, you might enjoy it.

Rim of the World
(2019)

The WORST movie you've ever seen? Come on
There are quite a few low scoring reviews that say this is the "worst movie I've ever seen" or criticize the "poor effects." Honestly, I can't take you seriously, it sounds like you need to watch more movies.

I don't know when everyone became a scathing critic but I think this movie succeeds in exactly what it's trying to accomplish. They literally reference "Independence Day" in the promo for the movie. It is not trying to break new ground or blow your mind. I will admit it doesn't even rank among movies I need to watch more than once, but to tear it apart and examine it under a microscope is to not understand it.

"Netflix" isn't a standard anymore. They're acquiring other network shows left and right and producing as much original content as possible, why? So they have an exclusive catalog and more groups of people will have incentive to continue subscribing. Not everything they put out is going to be your bag, and certainly doesn't need to be compared to each other.

I love the kids in this movie, I think the acting is fine. I didn't see any issues with the effects and if that's your main criticism, maybe you haven't seen any older movies? The plot is nothing special but again, this movie is not someone's magnum opus and it's not trying to be. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but personally I think people need to start recognizing the difference between something objectively bad and something that's not targeted for them.
