Revolver
(2005)

Watch a few times
First time I saw the film I was just confused and had to watch it again a couple of days later.

Once I watched it again I understood everything a lot better and now it is one of my fav films of the last few years.

I can understand why some people didn't like the film, personally I find it like a good book.... you have to really get into it for it to actually work... which isn't a bad thing really as you use your brain (an all to common event rare in modern movies).

Admitedly it's not exactly like his other CAPER movies, but this one stands on its own LOUD and PROUD so to speak.

Some of the script is just amazing and the premise of the film is equally as unique.

Not my Fav Guy Richie film, but none the less... its great fun, twists and turns and a unique ending.

The Prestige
(2006)

Machines - Clones and Actors
I have just watched the movie and I agree with a few people here.

As far as the MOVIE goes the machine works... why are we to believe this?

1) The Hats and Cats is a big clue 2) The WARNINGS about 'no good will come of this' from the bloke who invented it and the fact he said his first inventions challenged people but do it again and they are so flabbergasped (is that a word) they can't believe 3) Various quotes I wont go in to 4) The EXTRA guy in the tank at the end.

If you look at the last few moments of the film you see there are a LOT of tanks in the basement area... all probably full of the same fella (sorry bad memory for names lol). Kinda a giveaway huh!

They say the simple truth is the hardest to grasp and makes for the best illusion ... the simplest explanation is the unbelievable truth the machine works!

Its only a film so I can go with this, hell if I wanna rip a film for unbelievability and paradox I will watch 'Back to the future' 1 - 2 and 3 ... but the idea of a movie as with magic is to without our sense on disbelief and THIS film does that perfectly as the twist is... there is no twist! It WORKED and its kinda sick when yu think about it!

AND THERE IS MORE....

Remember the bird in the cage trick ... one smushed bird (Same deal)

Loads more to look at in the film, but basically it says magic lies between the lines and thats the illusion, when the illusion is best placed ON the lines where you Don't expect it to be found!

Either way, its got everyone here talking about it and I think I will get the DVD for the extras to see if they have an alt ending with clones everywhere covered in squashed doves:)

ENJOY THE FILM

I did

Saw
(2004)

Saw, Seen and Spoke
Of all the horror film I have seen in the past few years, this one stands out as much as THE RING did when I first saw it. For a film to start strong, end strong, carry a story, keep the suspense and pace going throughout. In short... if you like a good suspense film, good horror and want to see something not like everything else which brings the style of CUBE and SE7EN ... WATCH THIS FILM! You will end up watching it twice!

The cutting and direction on the film manage to keep you gripped to the seat the whole time and I was quite thankful that I didn't watch it at the cinema as it would have made me jump out my skin and cringe far too often, I wouldn't recommend that you watch this on a first date or with your granny.

Hide and Seek
(2005)

Hid and Saught
I went to see this film at a small 'Local' cinema after seeing a barrage of adverts and trailers for it and reading information about how the ending reel was shipped, and therefore expected a good twist and amazing ending.

Alas... I was duped as were many I feel by this rip off of various other films.

the film takes you through the life of a father and daughter as they deal with the death (suicide) of their mother and move to the sticks. the story itself is good... well.. It should be as it has been done to death many times before.

You get a general feel that the film will take a supernatural twist right from the word go with the spooky and rather eerie intro sequence and titles.. yet again then was a lie.

I found myself knowing the ending of the film far too early which left me only with the acting to keep me interested in the rest of the movie, which was good in general if not a little convoluded at times and predictable.

The young girl was fantastic and I am sure she will go on to do more involved story lines and plots as she gets older.

Watch out for the '6th Sense' rip off near the end of the film, done with the tact and care of a beartrap.

All in all the film is good, but was capable of so much more.

The Village
(2004)

The Village of the mundane
I have just seen the movie and alas i was not even slightly shocked, amazed or bewildered by the whole film.

The plot was too simple, the ending was obvious and it had the feel of dr quin medicine woman mixed with The Blair Witch Project at best.

I expected so much more from Night, but sadly i was mistaken. Night has made some good films and sooner or later the bubble would burst.

Its more the kind of thing you would like to see on TV as then you wouldnt pay to see it.

Thumbs down as a Night film and as a generic movie... thumbs down also.

THINK NEXT TIME NIGHT..... Recapture yourself in a new story and dont listen to the production team so much.

Derren Brown: Trick of the Mind
(2004)

One of a kind
Long gone are the days of Paul daniels and having to watch people bring things out of hats and confound us with yet another card trick.

The last BIG mentalist on our screens was the ever STRANGE looking Max Mavern, so thank god for Derren who is bringing back a little class to the genre again.. with hardly a TRICK of the CARDS in sight.

Also Derren is an accomplished artist, so check his work out.

If your fed up with the tacky magic that you normally see and are fed up with waiting for David Copperfield to accidently float into a rotating fan in the air conditioning on a milllion dollar stage and actually want to be inpressed, I advise you see Derrens work on dvd or on tv.. LIVE if you can.

Runaway Car
(1997)

Runaway from this movie
The genre of TV movie is something that is never that good and normally rips off other films for a teas time fix of excitment and romance in general.

I woke up this morning to this film and soon started to agree with other commenters on it. The acting is horrible, even Judge Reinhold who is normally ok as an actor somehow becomes the most annoying person to watch, the supporting cast should have had their scripts visible as this would not have made things any worse.

There is one amusing scee (watching it now) where the baby is air lifted by a helicopter and alost does a conker manover into a bridge. he hee.

Whilst watching this film, remember that we humans are capable of such great acting and that scripts can be made by the actors... also remember that there is probably a news channel on at the same time as this film, so take my advice... watch that instead.

I am having to watch the last bit of the film just to warrant by complains... but I dont think it will be saved by any thespian soon.

A Study in Terror
(1965)

Study in Error
I am a big fan of Jack the ripper story and i can suspend my disbelief as well as the next man, but I am not sure what old news papers were read to get the plot for this film.

Forgeting the fact its based in reality and only the facts have been changed the film is pretty good, the double meaning of some lines are classic like where Watson walks past the staff at a gentlemans house and refers himself as TRADE is worth a look in for only that scene and also some cameo apperences from people still working today.

If you like a good spin on Jack the ripper then go for the one with Jack the ripper and H G Wells as it also delves into the social views of the 1970's.. which is nice:)

A good romp of the film but some of the cast members seem out of place.

Lots of top hats though.. at least that was right!

Cypher
(2002)

Who is who thriller
When I first heard of the film I had no idea what it was about... then I heard it was from the team that brought us CUBE and I knew I would have to watch it.

A couple of weeks later I took the plunge to buy it first on DVD with its very loverly box design 'Hats off to the box designer' Very Funky.

The film takes place in the not to distant future and brings us the story about identity in a gripping spy thriller where you are never quite sure what is going to happen next.

Considering it was a low budget film (see the extras on the dvd for proof of this) they have managed to bring the vision and paranoia to the movie with relative ease.

If you imagine James Bond films mixed with the matrix and an element of Minority report your on the right tracks.

The ending is a little weak, but trying to find a film with a good ending is the hard.

If you like intellegent films with dimension and mystery which at no point explain everything and nanny you... this is a good film to watch. If your just after an action movie that gives your the thrills.... still watch it and you should like it too.

Now where is the next CUBE Mr Director.. I know you read this:)

Dead Like Me
(2003)

Dead like Them
This series is GREAT!

The characters are simple and pretty cliche, but cliche is cliche for a reason!

the reason is that it is good! The Main character George is Undead and a Reaper in the modern world! She collects souls whilst trying to get to grips with the fact that being dead isnt that easy when your undead!

The producers have now got the go ahead for series two after the 1st 14 part series finnished recently in the united states!

The show is also getting a cult following in England

Solaris
(2002)

Solaris ... The end is here? or should have been earier?
I am a fan of the origional 1972 movie... even though I am not a huge fan of subtitled movies!

Alas this version does not portray the same emotions of the origional version, The main female lead was not compelling and frankly I didnt mind if she lived or died!

Everything was far to subdued and relaxed for a film of this style to be remade in the 21st century!

At some point I will read the book as I have heard that the QUESTION raied within it are not touched on in the movie!

Perfect for a hot sunday morning... but dont watch it with friends if you value a good time!

Valentine Park
(1987)

1980 Sitcom Valentine Park, Good comedy series
I watched this in England in the 1980's, It wasnt the best comedy sitcom available on TV at the time, but was shot just around the corner from me in Westbridgford, Nottingham, England.

The Actor in the main role played by David Thewlis managed to gain critical acclaim over the years and I am happy to say I worked with him as an extra in this series.... ok I was only background but I got to meet him a few times.

the series rotates around a love affair in a garden park in England with the usual bunglings and errors in any relationship.

A product of its time, but good fun.

Simular in style to WATCHING (another 1980's comedy sitcom about lovers)

Eddie Izzard: Circle
(2002)

Full Square
Normally I would praise Eddie for his acheivements.... he has done a hell of a lot without getting into the dreaded British and American TV thing, but alas this dvd was a little too strained even for a hardened fan like myself.

Some of the material was great..... but not up to scrath considering dress to kill and unrepeatable to name a couple.

At least we have his acting skills if the comedy shows dont work out.

Maybe eddie should come home to england and forget america for a bit and get to grips with the homeland that spawned his mind and its creativity

Hellraiser: Inferno
(2000)

Script Raiser
Just watched this movie.

It was worth the 3 pounds fifty I paid for it..... thats considering the fact that should have been the budget for the movie!

I am a BIG Clive Barker fan... I was disapointed in the movie on most aspects, the fact that Pinhead made a GUEST APPEARANCE was bad but the fact the story didnt hold with the mythology of HELLRAISERS past was the most annoying.

The script was poor and the acting was painfull to watch.

I will take my hat off to Clive and the team on some good special effects and a reasonably good nightmarish quality to some of the scenes.. but if we dont CARE if the STAR lives is kinda important!

I can see where he was going with this movie but alas it just didnt cut it as a HELLRAISER flick!

The ONLY way you KNEW it was a Barker Creation was by some of the Cenobite outfits and the *OH MY GOSH* occasional mention and sight of the BOX!

the ending wasn't bad for Barker though, so I MAY buy him a beer for that when I meet him!

Digby: The Biggest Dog in the World
(1973)

1970's in a nutshell
There are FEW films that are just FUN for kids in the 1970's.... the most that we British had were the Carry on Movies... so seeing a nice little film with Jim Dale in is always a treat!

The basic story is simple, the effects are childlike and ...well.. simple and the acting is also as you can guess SIMPLE. This does not make for a plain SIMPLE movie for kids though. It shows them the basic kindness of the human spirit and some of the darker sides of captured animals because they are different too!

The jokes are inlayed in the movie together with basic 1970's British steriotypical images of the army, circus workers and the average Joe about the street, but it still holds together quite well.

If nothing more this film is fun and carefree, it doesn't really leave you with anything after you have seen it apart from a lil warm glow!

A Day in the Death of Joe Egg
(1972)

Joe Egg
I have sen many plays that deal with black comedy, but Joe Egg seems to be at the top of a very short list for me.

It deals with REAL issues that cover death, life, love, ambition and reality in a way that really gets you involved!

I new version is available staring Eddie Izzard where the writing comedy of the acting REALLY stands out!

If your not into plays but want a foot old into the genre... then watch this!

It is worth the time! and you will never forget some of the issues!

The Amazing Mr. Blunden
(1972)

GREW UP ON
Saw this film when I was a child, and it still gives me the same lil shudders and I STILL giggle in the right places... its a good old story with the sweetest ending EVER.

It really encapsulates the film genre of the 1970's and the old way of telling ghost stories which seems to have been lost in modern films.

This film is good for the whole family and actually deals with death and the afterlife in a manner that makes you talk about it afterwards
