Cidade de Deus
(2002)

one the best foreign films I've ever seen
This is one of my favourite films of all time. The reason being is that as soon as I finished watching the film, I was compelled to watch it again straight after(the only film to have made me do this was The Usual suspects). It's very fast paced and it really sucks you in to the characters and their situations. The film gives the viewer a real insight in to what happens in this city and how life really is for it's inhabitants.

You do empathise with the characters which is surprising considering how they live their lives, but I suppose that's the beauty of this film; it made me like this notorious characters, turning them in to anti-heros I suppose!

I would recommend this film to everyone and anyone, but unfortunately there are still people out there who can't watch a film with subtitles, but thats their loss.

Jean de Florette
(1986)

french cinema at it's best
The reason why I was watched this film is because I read both "la gloire de mon pere" and "la château de ma mere", two other books written by Marcel Pagnol, and I found them fascinating.

This film is a fabulous portrayal of one man's greed over another man's dream. The performances given in this film are mesmerising, from Depardieu's hunch back to Montand's le papet. Although this film is sublime, I think it would be a wise choice to see the following film, Manon des Sources, as it gives the whole story through both the films.

The film really goes to show how far some people will go to get what they want, whether it's le papet trying to secure a legacy for his family's name, or Jean de Florette trying to get his amazing ideas on farming to work.

Everything comes together so well in this film-the score, the storyline and the performances, something modern movie makers should take note of.

The Usual Suspects
(1995)

who is keiser souze?
I saw this film when I was in my last year at sixth form college. My brother had recommended it to me the night before and as I was supposed to be revising for my exams, I decided to watch the film. Before watching this film, I had never really sat at the edge of my seat all the way through a movie: I did with this one. I was hooked from start to finish.

The film doesn't just have one of the best endings of all time, but the actual body of the film is virtually flawless. I have watched this film over 20 times and I'm still finding new things in the movie that I didn't pick up before!! Everything about this film was of a very high standard, especially the cast- Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey and Pete Postlethwaite to name but a few.

To highlight what a great film this is, it's been mentioned in many screen writing books as a study case. It has so many twists turns, not only in the storyline but in the relationships between the characters.

This is a must see film for anyone who loves films, as it really shows how a film should be made.

La vita è bella
(1997)

why did spielberg hate this film so much?
My dad's a huge Benigni fan and when I saw that he was making this film I thought "what the hey, maybe I'll like it". I wasn't disappointed. This film made me laugh and cry, although at the end they were tears of joy. Benigni is his normal eccentric self, but that's not to take away from the other performers. The relationships between the different characters are what make this film, whether it's Guido's relationship with doctor Lessing or guido's relationship with Dora.

I heard that at the Oscars Spielberg didn't applaud Benigni when he got his award, saying that the film made a mockery of the Jewish plight in the second world war. It's a shame that he feels that you can't make light of the situation, because I kind of feel the jews who were being persecuted probably tried to make light of it, as this was probably the only way to keep their hopes alive. This story is about love, whether it be for spouse, sibling or offspring, surely that's not a bad thing.

Titanic
(1997)

Titanic must be turning in it's grave
For the life of me I still don't get why people like this film. It's got nearly every type of film cliché(rich girl falls in love with boom town rat, hmmm, original!), and THAT song. Near far, wherever you are, Celine Dion's song irritates the hell out of me. I think if you're going to make a film about Titanic, make a film about Titanic, not some annoying couple. I like romantic movies, don't get me wrong, but this is too cheesy and simple, which love invariably isn't.

In it's defence though, I would like to comment on the fact that the special effects department did a splendid job, but unfortunately I like my films to have a good and varied plot which this film totally lacks.

The Titanic was a great ship, ahead of it's time and was a icon of it's time, which makes this film an absolute travesty as it doesn't do Titanic's memory any justice.

The Godfather Part II
(1974)

best film of the three godfather movies
I love this movie not only because I'm half Italian, but also because I liked the history of the Corleone family and how the film flips from Michael's story to his father's story. The cinematography in the film is fantastic, especially the scenes in Sicily, but that should not take anything away from the stirring and very moving sound track as well. The reason why I think this is better than the first Godfather film is the fact that we get to learn more about why Vito, michael's father, came to America, and how difficult it was to scrape a living in the era, especially for southern Italians who thought they would escape the mafia and poverty by emmigrating to America, only to find they had both already got there before them. Every time I see the scene when the ship arrives in New York, with the fantastic and very emotive score accompanying it, I can't help but cry my heart out, it just struck a chord. Please, don't just watch this film because of it's mafia content, because it has so much more to offer, not only with it's fantastic performances(De Niro particularly, as it's hard to speak Sicilian dialect at the best of times), but also because it gives us an insight in to why a group of people would want to leave their homeland.
