This review is from the perspective of a guy who generally avoids romantic comedies like the plague. Their sense of humor usually makes me cringe. And early on, I was worried The Ugly Truth would be the same. But as soon as Gerard Butler popped on the screen, I started laughing frequently.
The premise of revealing the truth of how guys think is a comedic goldmine. So much of what he said is accurate. And I love the bluntness and uncensored nature of how he says it. This movie is not worried about being politically correct or offending people. In 2025, that's refreshing.
Heigl and Butler both play their roles perfectly. Their chemistry works, as does the romance aspect. I had a good time with this movie and would watch it again.

I am starved for comedy movies. They seem to be nearing extinction. So I sometimes make exceptions to my "I only watch theatrically released movies" rule for a chance at some laughs.
From one perspective, You're Cordially Invited did make me laugh out loud 12-15 times. On the other hand, it feels like another barely mediocre movie that we constantly see from streaming originals.
Will Ferrell has nearly all of the funny parts. Aside from him, I found the majority of the cast unfunny. The failed comedic attempts made me cringe on several occasions. And there are so many stupid moments and things that make no sense in order to make the joke work.
Maybe I'm the wrong demographic. But aside from a few laughs, I did not enjoy this movie.

I watched this movie knowing zero about it. And it turned out to be one of the best examples of why you should watch movies knowing as little as possible. Discovering what it's about is one of the most enjoyable parts.
When I found out the premise/subgenre, my intrigue and excitement level skyrocketed. I literally sat up and leaned forward. These are the types of moments I'll never forget. Stop watching trailers!
For me, this movie succeeds on every level. Everything it tries works. Everything it wants me to feel, I feel. STRONGLY. I was rooting, clapping, laughing, etc. It was like a theme park ride.
There are a couple of great performances, especially the kid. There is one performance that could easily have been too over-the-top, but instead becomes highly memorable.
The story continues to evolve, never getting stale. The one thing that could hold it back for me was being too tame or mild. But it wasn't. It goes hard.
I straight up love this movie. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the runtime. Entertainment level to the max.
