Cold Moon
(2016)

Entertaining Flick Better than Reviews Suggest
This movie came and went with apparently little notice from the general public or horror fans, unless I just missed it. I came upon it by chance almost two years after it's release so I wasn't expecting much. Set in the 80's, it's a horror ghost story about revenge. It has more than a few genre actors that you'll recognize and a decent story. I found it well-made and entertaining, certainly better than it's rating suggest. There is a bit of a murder mystery but don't expect to much depth there. Nevertheless, I recommend this one to fans of supernatural horror.

Decent Creature Feature
I was hopeful but wasn't expecting much by this little creature feature. There are a few movies out there which are kinda along the same line (Bug, Bite & Itsy Bitsy is coming out soon too)but this is one is fairly original and I like it. It reminds me a bit of the famous Trilogy of Terror Episode with Karen Black written by Richard Matheson which all serious horror enthusiasts should be familiar with. without any spoilers, it's about a woman who after recently moving into a new apartment suffers some increasingly worse mysterious bites on her body while she sleeps. The movie has decent production and chose wisely when to spend money on effects where they needed them. A big named actress, budget and a little script tinkering could have made this an 8 or 9 in my opinion. There isn't much here that you don't see coming by the end but it was enjoyable and entertaining. If the above sounds interesting to you, you'll probably like it. It scratched my horror itch, if you'll pardon my pun.

Decently Produced Creature Flick
You know this was actually a decent little action/creature feature with a Pulp Adventure feel. There aren't many movies like this, a modern action, sci-fi creature feature. If you enjoy movies like Tremors and Piranha, this kinda movie will appeal to you. You don't find many movies in this genre with high production standards but this movie is well-produced an even stars Kelsey Gramer. This was clearly a foreign production but has all English speaking actors. The plot is simply a rescue mission is formed to save a pair of explorers who went missing while locating a hidden tomb in China. We have a bit of a modern Indiana Jones feel. While the subject matter risks being campy, it successfully maintains its tone and succeeds in being an entertaining little creature flick.

Well Done Monster Flick Worth a Look
Netflix has come a long way in monster movie production. I have a real soft spot for well made monster flicks. On the other hand, I hate poorly produced monster flicks with bad stories. This is a good one. Simple yet original story, slow building story arc and reveal. I wish there were more like this. Good Job.

A Great Horror Period Piece
I thought by mistake when I first heard about this movie that it was a mini series. Despite liking the premise, I didn't pursue watching it for some time not wanting to watch a mini-series. Seeing it listed on Netflix I realized that it was a two hour movie. I'm glad I gave it a watch. It is a wonderful period piece horror set in the depression era farmlands of rural America. It is dark with very few and subtle supernatural horror elements. I must say, Thomas Jane is impressive in this role. He may be making his way onto my list of leading male actors.

Well Made and Entertaining Horror Yarn
Let me begin by saying I was very caught off guard by this. I thought this was going to be a poor quality simplistic horror flick. It's actually a high quality production and despite the fact that you know the basic premise, it's pretty entertaining and does more than you might expect with the story. If the premise of the story appeals to you, you'll probably enjoy it. Basically it's about a magic notebook with it's own demon overseer who kills anyone whose name is put in it by the current owner. It's a dark genie tale. Personally, I would have liked the story to omit the detective aspect of the character "L" but this is still very much worth a watch and has some clever aspects to the story.

A Unique Flick
I was drawn to see this movie after reading a brief plot synopsis which had a clear Lovecraftian horror theme (et in the 20's an isolated lighthouse attacked by creatures from the sea). And though this wasn't exactly the movie I wanted it to be, I was satisfied with it. Firstly, this movie is extremely well-made and acted. The location is simply wonderful. I would've preferred the sea creatures to be more grotesque but that wasn't what they were aiming for. This film doesn't explain everything which leaves you thinking about it which works well in this case. I enjoyed too which leads the viewer to wonder just how long the lighthouse keeper had been there and who the original lighthouse keeper was. Not surprisingly, this movie is based on a rather popular foreign novel which received a bit of praise and attention which it apparently is quite faithful to.

Great Set-up but Fails to Deliver **SPOILER**
I can say that I really liked and was excited about this movie as it's premise began and the plot developed. A damaged woman with mysterious objectives and an occultist delve into a long and dangerous ritual. It's original and had me pulled in. It just doesn't deliver in my opinion. I had fears that the plot would meander into a gray uncertain area where the viewer wasn't sure if the characters were witnessing something supernatural or were purely delusional by the climax of the movie.

*****SMALL SPOILERS***** While I'm thankful the movie didn't go in that direction, I still felt the story just fizzled out. There were also a number of missed opportunities, in my opinion, to have more character interaction of interesting occurrences.

One scene where the woman leaves the protection of the circle surrounding the house, was a let-down and a missed opportunity. In stead, I found myself fast forwarding through uneventful and silent scenes of her walking around rather pointlessly for long period of times with no dialog or purpose. I would have liked the story to reveal a more twisted plot and obvious one was dangled before us in which the occultist was involved in the cause of the woman's suffering but the story doesn't go there and closes the door on that possibility after hinting at it. Sadly in the end, I think that I'd rather have seen that conclusion than the one that was filmed.

Horror Worth Watching
There was a ton of positive press from others about this movie which is totally justified. I watched a single trailer sparingly and carefully avoided reading or watching spoilers about this one to savor and keep my viewing experience unspoiled and I'm glad I did. This may be the best horror movie of not only the year but the past few years. I can say without spoiling anything that this movie combined the best of "Guess whose coming to Dinner" and "Rosemary's Baby" feel. What made the movie even better was that I had some guesses about what was going to happen in the movie but the story hits you with a sucker punch from a completely different direction that we've never seen before. This is an utterly new and different horror experience. It has some dry situational humor but remains an utterly dark and worthwhile horror experience. This is definitely a keeper and worth multiple viewings.

Split

Horror Worth Watching
I try to watch and review movies immediately afterwards or after I've had a day to process them with the details freshly in mind, that being said, this is a good movie with an outstanding performance. I can say this is the most impressive acting I've seen in a horror movie or thriller. James McAvoy is incredible as the antagonist who suffers from split personality. We actually get to know and recognize the varied faces and personalities which make up his persona and to dread the emergence of the worst of the hidden monsters who lurks deep inside him. The story beyond that is well-done with an outstanding nod and tie in to another related work at the end which was priceless. I can definitely say this this is worth a watch. It also nicely balances the line between horror and thriller only becoming more apparent with its concluding moments. Welcome back Mr. Shyamalan. I'd definitely say James McAvoy deserves some praise for his work in this movie.

The Void
(2016)

Horror Worth Watching
I eagerly waited to see this one but didn't have high expectations. Thankfully, was actually "better" than I hoped. If you're a fan of H. P. Lovecraft or mythos themed movies, you'll consider this a decent flick. If that sort of ancient elder evil from outside isn't your sort of thing, steer clear of this one. I'd compare it to "The Resurrected" with Chris Sarandon. Both have the same visceral creature effects and outer horror theme. Good acting and production values. Basically the story is about a tiny group of people trapped in a nearly abandoned small town hospital while under siege by cultists. There is actually much more going on with the plot with a couple of twists I didn't see coming and while you never get a tired explanation, you do get just enough to piece together what has been going on in this small town. It is action and gore heavy with good old-school creature effects not CGI. Sadly, I don't think we don't get enough of this kind of modern horror movies. I rather enjoyed this and picked up a copy to keep. It isn't anything stellar, but I was pleased with it and can say it was worth watching.

The Devil's Candy
(2015)

Horror Worth Watching
Wow a great Horror Movie. I was slightly put off by the cover art of this movie and almost missed this one thinking it was a slasher film, it is not. I am not a fan of simple gore slasher movies and I visually categorized this as something akin to "Devil's Rejects" which is the type of movie I despise. Fortunately, I stumbled upon a good review of this movie which made me pick it up. Anyway, this may be one of the better horror movies of 2015. Pruitt Taylor Vince performance is very memorable and disturbing. Everything from his demeanor to that dirty red tracksuit. Ethan Embry (Late Phases, Incident on a Mountain Road) is no stranger to horror films but I barely recognized due to his long hair and grunge rock appearance, he gives an outstanding performance of a disturbed painter and father who receives an overwhelming urge to paint a sinister painting that is invading his mind. Interesting to note, the voices that the antagonist and the protagonist are hearing are NOT THE SAME. They are different which I think becomes apparent by the end of the film. This movie is full of tension with strong supernatural undertones. There is surprisingly little gore in this movie though we see multiple scenes of bloody aftermaths.

Dig Two Graves
(2014)

Horror Worth Watching
I gave myself a day to process this movie before commenting on it. A little girl is haunted by the death of her older brother and is offered a bargain by a strange trio of gypsies to bring him back, at a price. Bottom line, I wish all horror films were this good. This movie really has just about everything I want in a horror movie: childhood nostalgia and tragedy, a cult, mysterious gypsies, people haunted by dark secrets of their past, magic, etc... and it's all tied together with a very satisfying ending. I would have liked to have seen one more thing happen in the movie that never quite did but I think that's why the movie resolves so well. Well-filmed and acted.

The Veil
(2016)

Horror Worth Watching
This is one that slipped by me.

The reviews seemed mediocre to average on IMDb which generally among horror ratings means it may be decent. I avoided spoilers on this one since there seemed to be a mystery of sorts involved. This is a decent supernatural horror movie. I've seen a couple movies based on Jim Jones type suicide cults, its been done before and as good as some have been, seeing more of the same generally doesn't interest me. This was something completely different though more akin to H.P. Lovecraft's "The Thing on the Doorstep" or the movie "Skeleton Key" which I won't go into detail about but I'd recommend for similar reasons. Needless to say, I enjoyed it. It's not stellar but it's good and well done.

The Creature Below
(2016)

Decent Lovecraft Themed Movie
If your a horror or Lovecraft film fan, you'll probably give this a pretty decent rating. It had the same production values of "The Resurrected" AKA Shatterbrain with Chris Sarandon of course without Chris Sarandon.

I'm a huge fan of H. P. Lovecraft literature, one of the major fathers of modern horror. If you don't know the name and your a horror movie fan, it's time to pick up a book. Anyhow, there are a great number of specific film adaptations of Lovecraft but many decent movies based on the theme. I had been waiting for some time to get my hands on this one. Due to a trailer I had seen the movie seemed to be heavily influenced by and related to Cthulhu, one of Lovecraft's major antagonists.

This doesn't have any big-named actors and is a lower budget affair but I was pleased to say I enjoyed it and found it an entertaining addition to other "Lovecraft Themed Films". Basically it's about a deep sea research diver who brings up a semi parasitic creature she discovers on a deep sea dive. The creature grows and begins to influence her to... This film story is very similar to another Lovecraft themed movie a foreign 1981 film "Possession" with beloved Horror Icon Sam Neill but isn't a twisted and difficult to follow and it's in English.

If your a Lovecraft film fan, these is definitely worth the watch. They never directly mention the mythos but the crude cave drawing, images, monologue and the ending leave no doubt.

If I have one grip about this, it may be the further development of a human antagonist. They were doing a fairly good job with the story and the main character and I think they might have gone further if they hadn't deviated from it but I'm satisfied with the viewing experience nevertheless.

Come Back to Me
(2014)

Refreshing Horror Movie
I watch horror movies by the boatload, in hopes of finding a hidden gem here or there. It's what I do. I am accustomed to being disappointed but occasionally, I am rewarded by finding something special. This was one such occasion. I'm surprised this movie passed under my radar. I almost didn't even bother with it having heard almost nothing of it but watched it after finding it included in a list of someone's favorite horror films.

Generally my tastes are primarily for supernatural horror not your typical hack and slash film but a movie with a slow build up that doesn't reveal too much too soon. Unknown to me previously, this movie was based on the book by James Wrath White who is one of the new generation of supernatural horror writers who I had actually read some books by. Like his contemporary writers Edward Lee, Mr. White generally writes stories of extreme supernatural or eldritch unexplainable horror which can be an acquired taste. It is well produced, well acted and well filmed which are wonderful pluses but it also has an original plot and is well-directed and could have easily fallen short if not handled by a good director.

Definitely worth a watch. The ending caught me completely off-guard (not easy to do in a horror flick) and was outstanding!

Abattoir

Interesting Ideas and Images Falls Short
This subject of this movie peaked my interest. A diabolic old man that collects murder scenes from houses, a cult of followers, a small dark nameless town. There are a lot of ideas and themes here to like. The acting is decent and the film looks good but seems to fall short for me. Somehow we just don't get a solid delivery. This should have been the type of movie that was just up my avenue but it came off too far-fetched even for my supernatural horror movie tastes. It's far above much of the sub-standard horror out there and has good production values but it's not a keeper. I'd recommend it for those interested and who enjoy something different but keep your expectations on the low end.

Much Better than I expected and Not without Merit
This movie has poor IMDb ratings. However, it is actually much better than it's rating might suggest. If your a horror movie watcher, you'll probably rate this movie higher than the general viewing public. No it isn't anything stellar but it held my attention the whole time and entertained me. This is what many people consider Torture porn and is definitely not for the squeamish. Much like the Hostel movies, most can take only so much of movies like this. This movie isn't without some merits though and a decent plot and ending. It is also an under-watched movie which perhaps merits more notice.

If you liked Hostel and can watch/stomach a couple scenes that definitely qualify as torture, you might give it a watch. The story isn't bad.

Teen Lust
(2014)

Not too Bad
Seeing the low ratings on IMDb, I expected this movie to be garbage but nevertheless, I decided to watch it based purely on the plot summary which sounded interesting. This movie is far better than I expected. It's a semi humorous teen horror movie with semi adult themes similar to Fright Night with a bit of the feel of American Pie sex themes. I rather enjoyed the movie and it held my interest. If cults and sacrifice and teen sex are movie themes you like and you liked the two before mentioned films, you'll probably like this. I hate to admit, my only grip is that it wasn't more visceral and had the nudity toned down.

What We Do in the Shadows
(2014)

Outstanding And Entertaining Work
Before viewing this title I didn't think it would appeal to me much as a horror comedy documentary. I'm glad I gave it a chance though. Having watched countless horror flicks, I would say there are not many whose attempt a humor I appreciate (Slither, Young Frankenstein, and Perhaps Sam Rami's Evil Dead are the only ones that come to mind). This however succeeds with it's serious documentary style footage of what it's like to be a vampire.

Twice while watching this, I started laughing out loud so much that I even had to pause the movie on one occasion. I commend the writers and actors with this production, this is definitely a keeper.

Ahí va el diablo
(2012)

A Great Original Foreign Horror Flick
Despite being a foreign film, I really liked this movie. The version I watched was dubbed really well in English and had English subtitles. As far as being an original creepy horror film, I give this film top honors. It's better than a ton of the genre trash out there. I like how some of the disturbing aspects are left unspoken, unseen, and are merely suggested. It does has some nudity and adult themes, as well as one fairly brutal scene, but nothing is overdone or too extreme. As a matter of fact what would be the most disturbing scene is merely suggested.

This is probably a horror director to pay attention to in the future.

Dracula 3D
(2012)

An Under-appreciated Dracula Worth Watching
It took me a while to obtain a copy of this film but I'm glad I did. If you like any of the classic Hammer style Dracula films, you will enjoy this very much.

There may be some who criticize this film from deviating slightly from the original story as in the Francis Ford Coppola version but I find it a refreshing and ambitious period film. The scenery, dress, effects, and locations are perfectly suitable the music was also suitably appropriate. Any director who boldly attempts a period Dracula piece has there work cut out for them. I actually found all the characters (even the townsfolk) slightly interesting to some degree which is something I can't say for most horror movies. Even the part of Van Helsing was well done, I enjoyed how Van Helsing was played as a quiet man of few words.

This work has some sex and nudity but all of which was suitably appropriate for the scenes.

I'd rate this film just slightly under the Coppola Version but still well worth watching.

Spring
(2014)

Excellent Lovecraftian Flick
I watched this movie without any expectations and was more than satisfied with it.

The story centers on a man traveling abroad after the death of his mother. By chance he happens to find himself in a very rural seaport town in Italy. A an exotic woman catches his eye and a romance begins. The rest of the tale centers on the young mans romance with the exotic woman, who isn't everything she appears to be and has a horrible secret.

This movie is a slow paced film with just enough gore and pacing to hold my interest. I was very satisfied with the tension and build-up at the closing moment of the film.

I highly recommend this to those who like well developed tension building lovecraftian horror. I'd be interested in watching further productions from this group of film-makers.

Nothing But the Night
(1973)

A Hidden Gem
Every now and then you stumble on an unheard of gem..

This is one of those movies you've never heard of which has a decent story and good cast. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee star in this modern film about a mystery surrounding the children of an orphanage and a bizarre series of deaths. This is definitely worth watching if you like these Hammer stars and like occult movies. I must admit this one caught me off guard. The end could have been fleshed out a bit more but I definitely enjoyed the story and have even managed to obtain a DVD transfer for my collection.

I think this plot could be done to make a great modern horror. I found it on Youtube...
