Victoria: Et in Arcadia
(2019)
Episode 3, Season 3

i have a question
What are the porcelain baby arms and legs about on the red pillows?

Deep Burial
(2017)

brains not blasts
If you like thoughtful sci-fi flicks I think you will like this film. There are very cool special effects but they are the icing, not the cake. The heroine was strong, smart and competent, but also human. However I rolled my eyes ( just a bit ) at how her attractiveness was exploited. This is what quality story telling is, not a circus of blasts, bangs and super fast CGI superhero fights (yawn) Don't get me wrong, those can be fun, but they get old fast

The Last Winter
(2006)

scary- until the dopey end
This film has beautiful scenes of the Artic, interesting and original characters and good acting. It has a tense, original and scary storyline. (The popular theme of a group of people being picked off one by one in a secluded location makes me think of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" story. I am wondering if that was the 1st use?)

Having stated the positive aspects of the film, I have to add the CGI at the end of this movie is right out of a SyFy Channel's "monster movie of the week" lineup (not exactly a compliment). It would have been a great movie if the end had been done differently. As we all know, it scarier to have us imagine what we can't see, rather than do a lackluster job with special effects

Flesh Wounds
(2011)

Visually great- the rest is slop
This would be a 2 if not for the beautiful and interesting cinematography. The acting might have been good with a better script. So close to the Predator film it is funny;

This includes the one small female in with truck sized male commandos, deep jungles, mowing down of said jungle while shooting at the invisible " predator" character. They even hear the Predator howl in pain in the distance while it is repairing itself.

The female commando is smart and capable, and takes no c*** from the men.

Some of the dialog is amusing but the whole film tends to be a gore/shoot/stab feast and overly Macho.

Tom & Viv
(1994)

Hormone Hell
I am not a doctor, but I I have been teaching psychology for 20 years, and what I think is that she had both a bi-poler disorder (manic depression) and also severe gynecological trouble. She mentions she was perfectly fine after she hit menopause, which says a lot. Remember Tom says she has manic highs and then bad depression? Maybe the bi-polar disorder was somehow caused by the hormone imbalance? What broke my heart is that he was so appalled by her bleeding on their wedding night, which in turn crushed and panicked her. Sorry fellas, sometimes we have no control over these things, and if you are married to a woman for any time at all-you just get used to the little jokes mother nature plays. We know that stress and loneliness only make mental illness worse, and hormonal problems worse too. She was very ill and violent, but I feel Tom turned cold and selfish toward her, which made all of her problems worse. Also remember she purposely misses the "monkey on a greasy pole" (catch the symbolism?) mental fitness question, after pleading at Tom with her eyes, but he just looks away.

Homefront
(1991)

Wonderful flavor of America just after WW2
I waited each week for this show to come on. The characters are so real the stories so well written-please put this on the air again! It has such a wonderful flavor of America just after WW2, which is a special historic period of interest for me, although I was in my 30's when this show broadcast. I remember the 1st episode and 1st scenes, which just held me spellbound. The "sweetest girl in town", runs to meet her fiancé, she is already in a wedding dress (to waste no time) as he steps of the train . Her world shatters as he introduces the English girl he has just married. This gorgeous English war refugee (much later in the series) reveals that when you have thrown up for 2 days from eating rotted food, the only food you could find, you will surprise yourself as to what you will do to never be hungry again. Poignant glimpses into the personal pains of war, and humorous observations of the human condition in a small town.

Child Bride of Short Creek
(1981)

very realistic glimpse of polygamy
This is a dramatization of a historic raid on a polygamist community. I grew up in Utah as a non-Mormon, but I went with my best friend to all kinds of LDS church meetings, conferences and dances. The main LDS church will excommunicate you for polygamy, but off shoot churches have continued this practice to this day. The "Big Brother" feel of everyone knowing everyone else's business, and being expected to do as everyone else does, in every little thing in your life, is very true. It is a realistic glimpse into a tightly woven religious sect (cult if you will). Very young girls are married off to men the age of their fathers, or even grandfathers, and often they are already related in some way, because of the small size of the community. I love this line; the girls are doing hard chores in above 100(f)degree heat. One of the girls had dared to roll up the sleeves of her very modest, below the knee, dress to just above her elbows to cool off a bit. Her mother says "roll those sleeves down!-you want to show everything you've got!?"
