The Curious Case of Natalia Grace
(2023)

It changed my opinion
I'm giving this documentary a high rating solely because I went in believing that this could have been a case of an adult posing as a child and I came out thinking the exact opposite.

Michael Barnett was not believable in the least and did himself no favors with the show. I disliked him immediately. I feel bad for their prodigy son who really seems to have suffered some trauma but mostly I feel bad for Natalia. It's quite obvious, if you pay any amount of attention, that she was not an adult but in fact, a child. She was left to fend for herself by an uncaring and highly materialistic family. There was a lot of abuse. That was evident. How much more though? Because I have a feeling she suffered even more than we know.

Bron/Broen
(2011)

Loved it until the final season
I'm probably going to be the odd man out here. I absolutely loved the first 3 seasons. I initially found the Saga character difficult to watch, but as the series progressed, she easily became my favorite. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel with her having a new partner since the chemistry between her and Martin was great. Luckily, Henrik filled the shoes well. I was excited to see where things would go, but when I got to season 4, I almost bailed. I found a lot of it to be far too predictable and a letdown compared to previous seasons. That includes Sagas farewell. I get it, but I also saw it coming. I felt a bit disappointed. This show would have easily been a 9 or 10 for me if not for that. Regardless, I'm still going to miss it.

Tell Me Lies
(2022)

Who was the bad guy here?
I started watching this show and got into it rather quickly before, midway, it started to derail. I re-read the plot and was a bit confused about the characters. I was under the impression that Stephen was supposed to be a gaslighting narcissist who was also uber charming. I mean, it sort of fit. Well, except for the charming part. He actually was more creepy than anything and I really couldn't see anyone getting taken by a guy like this. I know it happens but I just don't think they portrayed his character accurately if that is what they were going for. I also thought Lucy was supposed to be kind of a wide-eyed naive college freshman who falls for his charms. She wasn't wide-eyed nor naive. She also wasn't likeable. At all. Neither was Stephen but, to be fair, I don't believe he was supposed to be. In order to garner sympathy for Lucy, if that's what they were trying to do, likeability would have helped. Somewhere along the way, she becomes obsessed with Stephen. Or at least that's what you are supposed to think. It didn't totally come off that way to me though. Maybe it's because there was no chemistry between the two (their sex scenes were painfully dull) but I never got "obsessed." She really liked him and she fell for his lies but she also had a side guy that she seemed much more happy with. I don't know. Honestly, I'm just not sure who was supposed to be taking advantage of whom since it seemed like they just took advantage of each other and everyone else around them. .

The only interesting part of the show was seeing Stephen at home with his family. You could see where he learned such tactics and the viewer could actually feel sorry for him for a minute. Just for a minute though because he immediately goes back to being a despicable person rather quickly. Lucy's family, on the other hand, was vastly different from his in every way. Weird, because I believe that's one of the things she thought bonded her and Stephen. Their toxic families. I didn't get toxic from hers. I could understand her feelings about the situation with her mom, but the whole thing seemed much more complex than she made it out to be. I'm not condoning what her mother did, but she really should have talked to her about it. Of course, if she did that, she wouldn't be able to play victim and personality wise, that's pretty much all she has.

What I ended up getting out of this show is that Lucy and Stephen are pretty much made for each other. Both are manipulative, selfish, narcissistic, immature and make horrible choices. They're stupid while being intelligent at the same time. On some level, they really should be together because no one else should ever be subjected to being in a relationship with either one of them. I'm not sure if a second season would change my opinion on that or if I'd even bother watching to find out.

Clique
(2017)

No likeable characters
This show was recommended to me after watching one that was similar. The story sounded intriguing so I decided to give it a shot. I can only review season one as I'm just not sure I'm going to watch season 2. That's mostly because I really disliked almost every character on here. No one more than Holly though. She earned that top spot. I had so many issues with her over the top obsessive behavior when it came to her best friend and her knack for continuously trusting the wrong people and not the right ones no matter how obvious it was. The permanent lost look on her face and horrible decision making was hard to watch without cringing. If it weren't for the actress that played Rachel and the fact that I was interested in how everything was connected, I probably would have given up completely. Since those elements are no longer part of the story, I just don't see the appeal of a second season.

El inocente
(2021)

Decent but predictable
Decent acting with an intriguing plot that could be very disturbing at times. My issue is that there was nothing unexpected about the twists. If you paid any attention to the story at all, the whole thing was rather predictable and lacked in suspense.

An Unquiet Grave
(2020)

Painfully dull
This movie was so boring that I actually forgot I was watching it. I cleaned up the kitchen and went out to water the lawn before I finally remembered that I was watching a movie. I came back in to rewind it and discovered that I hadn't actually missed anything because not a single eventful moment happens in the entire film. Seriously. Not one. I wasn't even this bored when I helped my husband sort his tools in the garage.

Blood
(2018)

Couldn't finish
I came for Adrian Dunbar but I disliked the main character so much that I couldn't finish the first series let alone watch the second one. Cat was so unlikeable that it just made it hard to engage. I found myself less and less interested in what really happened so I finally gave up.

Those Who Wish Me Dead
(2021)

The hitmen were the best part
I didn't think this movie was as bad as some have stated but it wasn't Oscar worthy either. I thought it seemed rushed and felt like things were left out or not explained. I didn't read the book but it just didn't seem like a complete story as far as the movie goes. When it comes to the cast, the acting was good with the surprising exception of Jolie. Not only was she not suited or believable for this role, her acting chops seemed to have diminished. I found her to be wooden and her scenes to be fairly boring, which we can blame the writers for some of that. Honestly, the most exciting parts, other than the fire of course, had to do with the assassins, played by Aidan Gillen and Nicholas Hoult. They were great and seemed to have fun with their roles. I would have liked for a longer interaction with them and Jake Weber, who played the dad. We barely got to know him before he was gone. It would have been nice to learn more about him and his role in all this other than the quick explanation we get when he's talking to his son, Connor. Sadly, Bernthal's character wasn't very interesting, which is too bad because I really like him as an actor. His onscreen wife though, played by Medina Senghore, was much more fun to watch even with the small amount of screen time she was given and Finn Little did a really good job as Connor. Yes, the story could be cheesy and unbelievable at times and as much as I hate to say it, they really should have cast someone else as the lead actress, but overall it was still a fun movie to watch for the most part.

The Duchess
(2020)

I loved it then kinda hated it....
I have a love/hate relationship with this show. It started out strong and I didn't mind its crudeness. I found a lot of it really funny. Somewhere towards the end however, it started to take a turn for me. I know it's just a show and we shouldn't take it seriously, but the mother, Katherine, constantly enabling her daughter, Olive, started to bother me. Olive seems to think that she's in charge and Katherine allows that. Even though we're supposed to believe Katherine is grappling with the decision to have another baby, it feels like she's not doing it for herself but rather for her daughter because SHE wants a sibling. When talking about it, she always states she wants a baby for Olive, not herself. She never really says why she wants to have another child. It's just kind of weird. Much like when Olive decides if Katherine and her boyfriend, Evan, can share a room and mom just goes with it. Odd. Then there's the end where she takes the only likable and reasonable person in the show (Evan) and turns him into a villain because, and let's be honest here, he's the only person who tells Olive any ounce of truth. Granted, it may not have been his place, but let's face it, somebody had to do it. Her biological parents certainly weren't ever going to. Both are too immature and insecure to be up front with her. I did laugh quite a bit in the beginning though, and I really enjoyed her best friend, Bev, as well as the ex, Shep, and how ridiculous he is, but I'm not sure if I'd watch another season if the mother/daughter dynamic stays the same.

The Sinner
(2017)

If only season 3 hadn't happened....
It's so hard to review this show because I really liked season 1 and thought season 2 was pretty good so I want to give it high marks.....but then season 3 happened. Oh god. Season 3. What can I say? I hated it. It was so bad that even though I only had 2 episodes to go till the end, I abandoned it. For the record, no, you don't need an above average IQ to "get it." Mostly because there's nothing to get. It's just an unbelievable mess. Maybe it's because I worked in the law enforcement arena for years but suspending some belief is one thing, suspending it completely is another and you have to because this wouldn't fly anywhere. I can't complain about the acting because they were all really good in their roles but the writing was absurd. If there is a season 4, I hope they do a better job.

The Elf
(2016)

Literally the worst movie I've ever seen
I love horror films and especially love Christmas themed horror, but man, was this movie bad. And no, I don't mean so bad it was good. I mean bad. This is quite literally the worst movie I have ever seen. I honestly don't believe there was an actual script. I think they were just told to wing it. There were moments of talking over each other, awkward pauses and random conversations that had nothing to do with the story. The music track was louder than the dialogue and the acting was just plain terrible. I think some dude just paid his friends to star in it.The elf, which didn't even look like an elf, just looked like a doll, was held up by someone behind a black sheet. I know this because at one point, I believe I saw their hand. That hand gave a better performance than everyone in this movie. Honestly, I wouldn't just skip this movie. I'd run far, far away from it.

Evil
(2019)

Started out great, quickly derailed
This is a pretty formulaic supernatural type show but I still found myself interested. Initially anyway. Unfortunately it started to go downhill pretty quickly for me when I realized they made the main female character a married woman with an absentee husband just so they could include some unnecessary romantic drama. No thanks. Add a group of girls that do nothing but talk over each other or scream whenever they are on the screen and a grandmother that is a worse babysitter than a boy crazed teenager and it starts to get old. Really fast. I'm still watching though. Mostly out of habit but also because it got renewed and I hope that there will be improvements. If they don't tone down the daughters though, and do something about the grandmother, I'm not sure how much longer I'll tune in.

You're Ugly Too
(2015)

Solid film
This isn't my typical genre but I decided to watch it anyway. It's a slow family drama that has a lot of heart and some good acting. I was actually surprised by how much I ended up liking it. It isn't perfect and it has its flaws, but overall it's a really solid film.

Prodigal Son
(2019)

Needs a different lead
If it wasn't for Michael Sheen, I'd probably stop watching. He's brilliant. I want to say I love his character but he plays a serial killer so that's a bit morbid......but I love his character! Anyway, the idea behind the show isn't real original obviously, but I thought it'd still be interesting. The main problem is Tom Payne. I watched him on TWD and thought he was ok. He wasn't a main character though, which was a good thing, because he can't act. That is very apparent. He's terrible. His scenes are so cringy that I have to look away and end up missing key moments so I have to rewind and force myself to endure it. They really should have cast someone else. Anyone else really. Lou Diamond Phillips does his job pretty well. He's LDP though. A veteran actor. I expect him to at least be decent, but the rest are mediocre at best. Some going as far as annoying. I'm looking at you Malcom's mom. I'd talk more about the plot, but it's been done so there isn't much to say. Let's face it. Michael Sheen needs more screen time. That's all there is to it. He's the only interesting character and the only reason to keep watching.
